61. Editor Eric - Modern Skepticism
eric. Belief is nothing but a more vivid, lively, forcible, firm, steady conceptionof an object, than what the imagination alone is ever able to attain.
http://www.editoreric.com/skeptics/quotations.html
Skeptical (and not so skeptical) Quotations These are quotations concerning skepticism, science, belief, faith and related topics. They're not all necessarily skeptical, as some may better serve to remind skeptics that even our approach of scientific and critical inquiry can be questioned. And at least one quotation is outright hostile to skepticism (but it's funny!). — Eric Click on a name or just scroll down and browse them all: José Bergamín Ralph Waldo Emerson Peter B. Medawar George Berkeley ... Simone Weil It is wrong always and everywhere for anyone to believe anything on insufficient evidence. William Kingdon Clifford , mathematician, philosopher
"The Ethics of Belief", 1879 Known as "Clifford's Dictum" this is one of two quotations adopted by Ontario Skeptics Society for Critical Inquiry (OSSCI). There is no other species on Earth that does science. It is, so far, entirely a human invention, evolved by natural selection in the cerebral cortex for one simple reason: it works. It is not perfect. It can be misused. It is only a tool. But it is by far the best tool we have, self-correcting, ongoing, applicable to everything. Carl Sagan , scientist, science popularizer

Catching Roosterfish By: Eric Brictson
An angler will see the roosterfish come up on and boil on the trolled bait. They will typically circle and whack at the offering before actually crashing on it. Other strikes can be so aggressive that all an angler can do is switch the reel into gear and set the hook right away!... Techniques Roosterfish patrol the shoreline searching for schools of baitfish. They will corral mullet and sardinas into tight balls and then attack. Slow trolling live bait close to the shore is the most productive technique for hooking into these fish, with mullet being the favorite bait and sardinas second on the list.

Including Historic Places in the Social Studies Curriculum October 1997 by Marilyn Harper
Places have powerful stories to tell. They speak through relationships to their settings, their plan and design, their building materials, their atmosphere and ambience, their furniture, and other objects they contain. They can evoke the ghosts of the people who once lived and worked there. These places provide physical evidence of how broad currents of history affect even small communities. Supplemented with primary or secondary written and visual materials, they also teach such skills as observation, working with maps, interpreting visual evidence, evaluating bias, analysis, comparison and contrast, and problem-solving. Teaching with Historic Places, a program administered by the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places, offers a variety of ways to share this "power of place" with students across the nation. At the heart of the program is a series of more than 50 classroom-ready lesson plans based on historic places listed in the National Register. These lessons allow teachers to use historic places to bring the new standards in geography, history, and social studies into their classrooms. PROJECT BACKGROUND During the 1980s and early 1990s, many people interested in saving historic places came to see what was usually called "heritage education" as a way to: (1) use places as lively and challenging resources to enrich teaching and learning for students, (2) help teachers, preservationists, and others to work together in their communities, and, ultimately, (3) encourage and strengthen public commitment to preserving these places. A survey conducted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1990 identified more than 600 heritage education programs.

Eric Gibson,
On How a Washington Critic Became Editor of ARTnews
By Barbara Vogt
Eric Gibson became familiar to the Washington art community as staff critic for The Washington Times during the period 1989 to 1993. This month he completes his first year as Executive Editor at ARTnews in New York. How did he make this leap from the relative obscurity of the "number two" newspaper in the nation's capital to the top position at one of the premier art magazines in the world? To find out, KOAN interviewed him in May of 1995.
Growing Up on Two Continents
When asked to retrace his early influences Eric Gibson begins with his childhood spent in Europe. His parents were keenly interested in art and regularly took him to museums during weekends and vacations. It wasn't until Gibson turned 15 that the beginnings of his own fascination with art surfaced, as he visited first a Barbara Hepworth, then a Henry Moore retrospective at the Tate Gallery. "The Moore show in particular was a true epiphany for me. That was when art and sculpture really registered in my mind."

Cast Undermined in 'Body Snatchers' Musical 2003-02-14 10:05:25 GMT (Reuters) Body Snatchers The Musical By Joel Hirschhorn HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Sometimes a cast of gifted actors can save a weak musical, and the performers in this Odyssey world premiere knock themselves out to make their show a lively and enjoyable experience. They occasionally succeed, but this loose reworking of Jack Finney's sci-fi classic "The Body Snatchers," which became a surprise B-picture milestone in 1956, is bogged down by a scattered and unfocused book. The score is at best briskly energetic and at worst a succession of songs that fail to further plot or characterization. Show gets off to a promising start with the presence of pianist-singer J Michael. A charismatic figure in black vest and red boots, Michael warms up the crowd with his opening speech and standout vocals. From there, a lineup of ludicrous characters clutter the Mill Valley landscape, including soft-porn actress Becky (DeLee Lively), perpetually horny doctor Miles (Eric Eichenberger) and a pair of sex-obsessed lovers, Jack (Clinton Derricks-Carroll) and Theodora (Michele Mais). The central plot gimmick has to do with pods replacing people and robbing them of emotion, so it's irritating that the first act dotes on dozens of superfluous subplots without building a bit of tension. We're told that the townspeople are suffering from mass hysteria and anxiety, but there's never a second they seem in genuine danger, and when pods and people fill the stage, they're virtually interchangeable. All this is resolved with a contrived "love is the answer" conclusion that has nothing to do with Jack Finney's powerful vision of lost identity.
