B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) Elizabethan poet, dramatist, and William Shakespeare 's predecessor in English drama, whose reputation in his lifetime wasn't as good as Shakespeare's. Marlowe was killed at the age of 29 in a tavern broil by Ingram Frizer, and buried at St. Nicholas, Deptford. His dramatic career lasted only six years. And as we all know, English-born mystery writer Raymond Chandler lent Marlowe's name to his own hero Philip Marlowe. Come live with me, and be my love;
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills and fields,
Woods or steepy mountain yields.

(from 'The Passionate Shepherd to His Love', c. 1589) Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury as the son of a shoemaker. He attended the King's School and was awarded a scholarship from the foundation of Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. Marlowe studied the Bible and the Reformation theologians as well as philosophy and history at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In 1584 he took a degree of A.B. Instead of continuing in Cambride, Marlowe left his studies to carry out a secret mission for the government. In 1587 he took the degree of M.A. University authorities, believing he had been converted to Catholicism, were first unwilling to grant his degree. It did not help him either, that he had been away too much from his studies. When the Queen's Privy Council interceded on Marlowe's behalf, the dispute was settled.

    On Columbus Day, Celebrate Western Civilization, Not Multiculturalism
    By Michael S. Berliner Columbus Day approaches and this year has a special meaning. Christopher Columbus is a carrier of Western civilization and the very values attacked by terrorists on September 11. To the "politically correct," Columbus Day is an occasion to be mourned. They have mourned, they have attacked, and they have intimidated schools across the country into replacing Columbus Day celebrations with "ethnic diversity" days.
    The politically correct view is that Columbus did not discover America, because people had lived here for thousands of years. Worse yet, it's claimed, the main legacy of Columbus is death and destruction. Columbus is routinely vilified as a symbol of slavery and genocide, and the celebration of his arrival likened to a celebration of Hitler and the Holocaust. The attacks on Columbus are ominous, because the actual target is Western civilization.
    Prior to 1492, what is now the United States was sparsely inhabited, unused, and undeveloped. The inhabitants were primarily hunter-gatherers, wandering across the land, living from hand to mouth and from day to day. There was virtually no change, no growth for thousands of years. With rare exception, life was nasty, brutish, and short: there was no wheel, no written language, no division of labor, little agriculture and scant permanent settlement; but there were endless, bloody wars. Whatever the problems it brought, the vilified Western culture also brought enormous, undreamed-of benefits, without which most of today's Indians would be infinitely poorer or not even alive.

Biography Sir Christopher Wren (b. Wiltshire, England 1632; d. London, England 1723) Christopher Wren was born in Wiltshire, England in 1632. He attended Wadham College, Oxford in 1649 as a Gentleman Commoner. At Oxford he joined a group of brilliant scholars, who later formed the core of the Royal Society. As assistant to an eminent anatomist, Wren developed skills as an experimental, scientific thinker. With astronomy as his initial course of study, Wren developed skills in working models, diagrams and charting that proved useful when he entered architecture. Wren became the Gresham Professor of Astronomy in London in 1657, at the age of twenty-five. Four years later he became the Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford. In 1663, Wren's uncle, the Bishop of Ely, asked him to design a new chapel for Pembroke College, Cambridge. This, his first foray into architecture, was quickly followed by more commissions.

    July 2002 Update New commentary from John Lazarus has been added after the last picture.)
    My fantasy of obtaining a videotape of KID CHAMPION remains unfulfilled, but this is pretty groovy. Behold images of Christopher Walken appearing in ROMEO AND JULIET (as Romeo) and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (as Lysander) at the Stratford Festival of 1968. This miracle came about when a co-worker's urchin, Jake Grussing, was assigned to sketch period costumes for class. Mom Carrie sought the assistance of UMM's Dean, noted Nabokov scholar Sam Schuman, who loaned her an antique theatre program. Rebecca the Walken fan peeked over her shoulder at the photos in the program and very nearly flipped.
    Thanks to Deb Grant for the scans.
    Christopher Walken as Romeo

    The text beneath the photo reads: Christopher Walken - Romeo. Christopher Walken comes to the Stratford Festival from New York, where he recently played Achilles in the highly acclaimed off-Broadway production of "Iphigenia in Aulis", which starred Irene Pappas. The 25-year-old actor began his stage career as a dancer while still attending Hofstar [sic] University in Long Island, New York. His first performances were in such musicals as "Baker Street" and "West Side Story". In 1966 he won a Clarence Derwent Award for his portrayal of King Phillip in the Broadway production of "The Lion in Winter" and also appeared with the New York Shakespeare Festival. Mr. Walken's performance as Jack Hunter in the City Centre's revival of "The Rose Tatoo" won him a Theatre World Award. In 1967 he starred in the title role of Peter Ustinov's "The Unknown Soldier and His Wife." He joined the Stratford Festival Company last winter to play Lysander in the tour of "A Midsummer Night's Dream".
