Couple's Love Remains a Howling Affair June 8, 1996 Dear Ann Landers: This is the story of how my mother and father met. They are too embarrassed to write, so I'm doing it for them. My parents were both studying in a library at Harvard University 21 years ago. It was late, and there was a full moon. Each thought the library was empty. My mother, at one end of the library, went to the window and started to howl at the moon. My father, who was at the other end of the library, also started to howl at the moon. When my mother heard someone else howling, she walked to where the sound was coming from and saw my father howling. Mom said she had seen him on the campus but he seemed sort of "nerdy." When she saw him howling, her opinion changed. She hoped he would ask her out, but he didn't, so she asked him. He was quite shy, but she was very fond of him and hung in there for five years. Finally, he proposed, and they got married. In August, they'll celebrate their 16th anniversary. They are still very much in love - and they still hold hands and howl at full moons.

Promoting Intimacy and Other-Centered Sexuality Ann Landers in favor of legalizing Prostitution STAND ON PROSTITUTION HAS ITS PROS AND CONS
Dear Ann Landers:
It was courageous of you to run that letter from the Nevada prostitute. I wonder if your client newspapers caught flak for printing it.
I, too, am a "Nevada Sex Worker." I enjoy my job and am grateful that the state of Nevada, in its infinite wisdom, accepts the fact that there is a legitimate market for my skills. I work in a licensed brothel and entertain as many as 150 men in every three-week working period. (I then get one week off.)
It is an enormous help to have someone such as you acknowledge the need for legalization of the work we do. You really are a tremendous force for good in this world, Ann.
Marjorie in the West
Dear Marjorie: I appreciate your support and am pleased to tell you that many readers wrote to applaud my courage. The verdict was not unanimous, however. Keep reading for another point of view: Ann Landers (you are not "dear" to me): That letter you printed from the Nevada prostitute was disgusting. I tore the whole page out of the newspaper so my children would not see it. I wonder how many papers canceled your contract because of it. I hope you will respond in print since others who think like I do would be pleased to see it.

(Scene: A Study or office. Helen IS seated at a table, writing. She writes, pauses, writes, pauses a few times. Finally, with a flourish of the pen, she looks up triumphantly.] Finished! [Shaking head in disbelief…] Boy, that took me a while. They could make a movie out of MY life. I never thought I’d find myself writing to Ann Landers. What a mess – I don’t know if I’m going to be able to squeeze out of this without any scars. I should probably read it over to see how it sounds before I send it off. I mean, I don’t want it to sound too self-righteous or something. [Pauses, arranges sheets in a pile, lifts up sheets in front of her, stretches out her arms. Begins confidently…] Dear Ann Landers, I’m sure you’ve never had anyone like me write to you before. Somehow my life turned out different – the white, middle-class, 1.5 kids thing just didn’t work out for me. Now I’m at the end of my rope, and I need some solid advice from someone I can trust. Ann Landers dies at 83
Last Updated Mon, 24 Jun 2002 0:45:44 CHICAGO - Ann Landers, an advice columnist who gained popularity with a fake name but genuinely blunt remarks, died Saturday.
Ann Landers Landers, whose real name was Esther Lederer, said she drew on her instincts when passing along advice to people. But Landers also consulted experts when she felt unqualified to answer certain questions. Her responses were sprinkled with humour and one-line zingers, including the now-famous phrase, "Wake up and smell the coffee," which became the title of one of her books. Topics ranged from food to finances, with a good number tackling sex. There was also everyday fluff, including the perennially popular debate over which direction toilet paper should hang off a roll. Not fond of computers, Lederer would sit at a typewriter and respond to hundreds of letters a day from an office in her high-rise apartment in Chicago. "Eppie Lederer was a great columnist and a wonderful person, said John W. Madigan, chairman and CEO of Tribune Co. "She helped people with her advice, and made important contributions to society through the causes she supported." Sister was 'Dear Abby' Decades later, when Pauline became "Dear Abby" with an advice column of her own, the sisters reportedly fought for several years before finally reconciling.

Ann Landers Column
(Appeared in Ms. Landers' column of January 9, 2000) Dear Ann Landers: For 11 years, your readers have opened their hearts to America's hospitalized veterans by sending cards and letters to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers across the country through your "Valentines for Vets" program. Last year, VA medical centers received more than three-quarters of a million valentines, and more than 30,000 people took the time to visit nearly 67,000 hospitalized veterans around the country. More than 500 volunteers were recruited to help at our VA hospitals. In addition, teachers throughout the country have taken this opportunity to educate their students about the accomplishments of our nation's veterans, and what they have done in support of our country. It has been said that the nation that forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten. Fortunately, the United States has never forgotten the sacrifices our veterans have made so that we might remain free. In 2000, America's National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans will be observed during the week of Feb. 14. Every day, approximately 100,000 veterans are treated in VA medical facilities. Some of them are alone, without family, friends or visitors. Ann, the cards and letters your readers send to our hospitalized veterans during that week serve as tangible reminders that they are remembered, appreciated and valued beyond measure. Your readers can mail their valentines to the nearest VA medical center, or drop them off in person. The addresses of our facilities can be obtained by looking in the telephone directory, or by calling VA's toll-free number, (800) 827-1000, or from VA's Web site at

Dear Ann Landers FORTY-ONE YEARS OF ADVICE, WISDOM, AND UNCOMMON GOOD SENSE By Kira Albin, interview conducted in 1997
Photograph courtesy of Ann Landers For 41 years, seven days a week, Eppie Lederer aka Ann Landers has dispensed advice as reliably as the sun rises and sets.
Ninety million readers worldwide take Lederer's counsel like a tonic. Two thousand readers a day send letters, hoping for answers from the revered sage herself.
Lederer-who turns 79 on July 4-is a keep-your-chin-up, common-sense gal who has managed to stay relevant and contemporary for four decades. Her secret, besides sagacity, wit and abundant energy, is an army of assistants that includes her staff, her family, and well-connected friends.
Lederer's daughter Marco Howard-smart and hip-reads Mom's column in the Boston Globe . "And if she doesn't like my answer to a particular question," says Lederer, "she'll call and say, 'I thought you were out to lunch today.'" Then there's the granddaughter in Minneapolis, the granddaughter in New York, and the grandson in California‹all extremely bright and perceptive, of course‹who read and call and keep Grandma on track. Most important is Lederer's list of friends, a Who's Who roll call, and it is these folks she has so brilliantly relied upon since Day One.

No matter what people thought of her advice, she was bold, gutsy and helped many people find their way. This humor piece will remain online as a tribute to her memory. ~~Jillian Talking about toilets makes me feel flushed. Not exactly dinner conversation, is it? But this essay is a juicy admission of deep, dark shame, so slip your slice of pepperoni pizza back in the box because I'm about to make a confessiona confession that's been in the making for thirty-nine years. (I obviously don't ascribe to the school of thought which says "Let the past go.") Public bathrooms traumatize me. I blame Ann Landers for my fear. Yes, I'm talking about the famous Chicago-based advice columnist, the lady, who on many occasions flogs her readersand occasionally herselfwith wet noodles. Please join me in the Wayback machine as we pull the lever and travel back to the summer of 1963. My best friend Mandy and I (name changed to protect the guilty), decided to leave our suburban homes for the day and ride the Northwestern Railroad, destination the Chicago Loop. We only were twelve-years-old but remember: those were innocent times and we were very good girls who didn't talk to strangers, obeyed the rules and were as inseparable as Winnie the Pooh and his honey jar.

Is All Advice the Same Behind the Scenes?
The Legacy
of Advice Sisters On June 22, 2002 syndicated advice columnist Ann Landers died in Chicago. She was two weeks away from her 84th birthday. Ann Landers was an originalearnest, honest and sincere. She had a sympathy for the people who trusted her, and people responded to her integrity. Her column was more than a job, it was a calling, and each day for 46 years she shared her understanding and common sense with millions of people. Ann Landers' first column appeared on October 16, 1955. Three months later her twin sister, Pauline, began a copycat column under the name Dear Abby. In 1956 Pauline allegedly offered the Dear Abby column to the Sioux City Journal at a reduced rate, if they agreed not to run Ann Landers. The Sioux City Journal was the sisters' hometown newspaper. Ann Landers decided her column would end with her death.

We had the Good Fortune to be able to Offer YOU These Wonderful Mementos of Ann!
Any of the jewelry in this collection would make a wonderful gift for that special someone.
How often have you enjoyed reading Ann Landers advice? Her name and face are immediately recognized by people all over the world. Even though she met and spent time with world leaders who no doubt enjoyed her wit and wisdom, she never lost her ability to relate to the rest of us ordinary people. So I am thrilled to have the honor of presenting some of the favorite jewelry pieces that Ann wore frequently and cared for carefully. This Collection includes gold and precious stone jewelry signed by the makers, Bulgari, Paloma Picasso, and others. Every piece was worn frequently by Ann Landers (Eppie Lederer) and as you will see she loved gold and diamonds as well as unusual designs. Every piece of jewelry is in mint wearable condition. There are also some exquisite "costume" pieces always in her quiet good taste. (No wet noodles here!) Ann was a size 6 or 8 with a very tiny neck and wrist. However some of the longer or larger pieces would look stunning on a lady of more average dimensions!

A Forward by
Margo Howard
Dear Friends:
Thank you for visiting the Ann Landers Research Fund to benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. I know my mother would have been proud of this collaboration, as she was a great supporter of medical research and a strong believer in focus and commitment, both of which are represented by the MMRF’s targeted mission and dedicated efforts toward funding the myeloma research.
It is also comforting for me to know that her name will be connected with the medical progress of an organization as respected and successful as the MMRF. By making a donation to this fund, your support will have a direct impact on tens of thousands of individuals and their families affected by multiple myeloma. I know that the money raised through this collaboration will be applied directly to the most promising myeloma research in the world. It is my hope that the awareness raised through this fund will help educate the general public and encourage them to support our efforts.
In the column I wrote following my mother’s death, I mentioned how she believed she got as much sustenance from her readers as they got from her. She was also convinced that if any one thing could serve as a solution to all manner of problems, it was kindness. Your generosity in supporting the Ann Landers Research Fund will help keep my mother’s spirit and the legacy of her kindness alive. It would be beyond wonderful if the mystery of multiple myeloma could be solved as the name Ann Landers joins the legion of people who devoutly wish for a cure. Please consider joining us in our fight to help find a cure for multiple myeloma. On behalf of my mother, thank you for caring.

A Brief History of the Legendary Columnist
Ann Landers’ career as a syndicated advice columnist spanned nearly 50 years. The Chicago Tribune was her journalistic home for the past 15 years and her column appeared in more than 1,200 newspapers worldwide, generating more than 2,000 letters each day. Her readers, who numbered close to 90 million and reached into the highest ranges of US society, respected her advice and revered her decades of wise and witty counsel on almost every kind of problem. Landers was widely considered one of the most influential women in America. She was truly a national institution.
Ann Landers was born Esther Pauline Friedman on July 4, 1918, in Sioux City, Iowa, along with her identical twin sister, Pauline Ester Friedman, who would become Abigail Van Buren, also known as Dear Abby.
Landers’ parents were Russian immigrants who owned movie theaters. According to Landers, she owed a lot to her parents and her Midwest upbringing. A Tribune reporter interviewing her several years ago quoted Landers’ as saying, "I think that middle-American values have helped me tremendously the principles, the morality. It was a place where neighbors cared about neighbors. And I mean really cared."
As a Chicagoan, Esther Lederer would become the world’s second Ann Landers. The first Landers was a nurse named Ruth Crowley. Crowley had written an advice column in the Chicago Sun-Times and when she died, the Sun-Times held a competition to choose a successor. Competition contestants, including Landers, were asked to respond to identical questions just as a columnist would.
