Professor Jane Thomas-Oates Email: jeto1@york.ac.uk Analytical Science: Biological Mass Spectrometry My group's research is focused on the structural analysis of biologically-active molecules in order to understand better their mechanism of action at the molecular level. Our primary technique is mass spectrometry, which we use in conjunction with a wide variety of other analytical techniques, including chemical, enzymatic and separations strategies, principally for application in proteomic and metabolomic studies. The group's research has an emphasis on pursuing long-term, integrated studies of biological systems, which means that multidisciplinary collaborations are of prime importance; we are very fortunate in having a range of ongoing projects with a set of long-term and expert collaborators. The major areas of our current interest are: a) the development of mass spectrometric protocols for interfacing with capillary separations techniques for proteomics and metabolomics applications b) the application of proteomic, metabolomic and glycobiological approaches to the study of a range of biological systems.

Prior to the 1850 cenus, Jane Thomas married George A. Yarborough. Born ca. 1830 in SC, George is the son of Uriah H. and Elizabeth Yarborough. Uriah H. Yarborough is the son of Joshua Yarborough who lived in Mecklenburg/Anson Counties NC before moving to SC. George A. Yarborough had a sister named Elizabeth E. Yarborough. She married Jane Thomas's half brother David Neely Thomas. I n the 1850 Chester County census, the newly married George and Jane are living near Jane's mother. In 1857, a wagon train left Chester County for Blount County Alabama. This large group of families located near relatives who had relocated in the 1830's. In 1860 Blount County AL, George A. Yarborough and family are living near Mary Neely, Christopher Brakefield, David Neely Thomas, Jonathan Harkness, Ananias Thomas and others. Lifelong residents of the Miami Valley and longtime parishioners of College Hill Community Church, Dave and Jane Thomas firmly believed that one of the greatest losses individuals can have is to not reach their full potential. And giving children the help they need to achieve their goal through educational, medical, emotional or religious support, was the Thomases dream. In their honor, their children, David Thomas III and Sue Thomas Thayer, established the Dave and Jane Thomas Fund through The Dayton Foundation. Grants from the fund are awarded to College Hill Community Church to support programs or initiatives that will encourage youth to become "responsible and productive citizens and children of God." Thayer said her father was always thinking of other people's needs. Although his own eyesight started failing before his death in 1976, he would record books onto audiocassettes so that blind students could complete their college courses.

Senior Lecturer in Nutrition Miss Thomas graduated with a BSc (Nutrition) degree from Queen Elizabeth College, London University and then qualified as a Dietitian in Canada, following postgraduate studies in Montreal. Returning to the UK, she was awarded a fellowship to study for a Masters degree in the Department of Community Health at the University of Nottingham, where she undertook research into eating behaviour, nutritional knowledge, and perceptions of body size amongst adolescents, afterwards joining the Health Education Council as their Research Officer. In 1979 Miss Thomas was appointed as a lecturer in the Department with a special responsibility for teaching and research in the area of food habits, eating behaviour and nutrition education. In addition to consultancy work to the Health Education Authority in the UK, Miss Thomas has also been actively involved in the development of Open University courses in Pakistan and India and acted as a consultant to the University of Sierra Leone for the British Council. She also broadcasts and writes for a popular audience and was until April 2001 editor of the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics . She is a member of the Council of the British Dietetic Association and a member of the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine.
