He began by subbing for an injured Rafael Furcal and provided the Braves with solid defense and a .300 batting average for 10 days in June. When Furcal returned on June 22, DeRosa assumed the role of backup and remained there until second-baseman Quilvio Veras twisted his ankle against the Phillies. DeRosa came in and got two hits in the contest.
Good thing, because Rafael Furcal was no sooner back than he re-injured himself and was out for the season with a dislocated left shoulder, temporarily making DeRosa the starting shortstop. At presstime DeRosa had a .417 on-base percentage and a .343 batting average.
On the memorable evening of July 19, on his way to the ballpark, DeRosa called his father, looking for some help.

About Counting the Omer n the second day of Passover in ancient times, our ancestors brought the first sheaf of barley (amounting to a measure called "an omer") reaped that season as an offering to God. From that day, they began counting the 49 days to Shavuot, when they would celebrate the beginning of the wheat harvest by offering the loaves made of the first wheat. Even after the Temple was destroyed and offerings were no longer brought, they continued to count the days from Passover to Shavuot in accordance with the biblical injunction (Lev. 23:15). Thus our ancestors linked Passover and Shavuot as occasions for thanking God for the fruits of the field. We, too, thank God for the renewal of life which nature proclaims at this season. However, as Passover and Shavuot acquired historical significance, their linkage through the counting of the intervening days took on new meaning. Passover celebrates the liberation from Egypt, and Shavuot celebrates the receiving of Torah at Sinai. By counting the omer, we symbolically connect liberation with the idea of Torah. Counting the omer is an exercise in the discipline of mindfulness. Counting each of the days of the omer reminds us that all of our days are numbered, and it is our responsibility to make each day count.

I hope no one is too upset that I revive this thread a few days after its putative demise; after all, it is a perennial on-list. My thanks to David Lupher for providing links to the archives for the excellent posts by Steven Willett and Elizabeth Vandiver, and to the summary report from Patrick Rourke. About two years ago I had a month to myself and, meaning to reread Homer, went down to the bookstore and purchased copies of both the Iliad and the Odyssey, by both Lattimore and Fitzgerald. As I was intending to read the Iliad out loud, I tried out both translations, and ended up choosing Fitzgerald, though I do refer to Lattimore often when I have some question as to the import of a given passage. A good part of what I based my decision on was the first paragraph of each translation, the content of which everyone knows, and which I append herewith for ease of comparison:
