The Touchstone , April/May 1997 BOOK REVIEW Al Franken, Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and other observations (Delacorte Press: ISBN 0-385-31474-4) reviewed by Colin Allen I happened to read this book on the same weekend that a couple of hundred members of Congress and their families had been shipped to weekend camp so that might acquire some civility. I'm sure I got the better deal unless Newt Gingrich has one hell of a standup routine or they got to play pin the tail on the donkey with a picture of Jesse Helms. Franken's book marks a zenith of incivility and it made me laugh. But if you're one of those people who thinks that rudeness stifles public debate, then you haven't watched enough of the British parliament on C-SPAN, and you may not like this book. By page 216, by his own count, Franken has included 83 Rush-is-fat jokes. There may have been more, but I wasn't counting. What does Rush Limbaugh's weight have to do with the lack of merit of his political views? Nothing at all. But Rush is fat. And Franken is one who thinks that a prick should be called a prick.

The catch is that the upgrade costs $50 and requires you return your CLIE to Sony. Dangerous Devices Danger ( www.danger.com ) may soon offer hardware that’s as cool as its name. The startup is working on a device it hopes will be a BlackBerry killer. Danger unveiled its hiptop wireless device at DEMOmobile in September. In October, the company announced it has secured another $36 million in financing. Danger could be a company to watch if it can deliver everything it promises with the hiptop. The device looks similar to a two-way pager with a small keyboard and grayscale display. However, the hiptop includes support for voice and data, letting users place calls, send instant messages, and surf the Web. Users can also send and receive e-mail with attachments. Although there was no specific information on which attachments are supported, we do know the device will support image attachments. A camera accessory will let users take pictures and e-mail them to friends and family. Rather than sell devices direct to consumers, Danger plans to work with wireless carriers to distribute the hiptop. At press time, Danger had yet to announce partners. Price was also not available, but Danger promises an “affordable solution.” Hopefully it doesn’t mean affordable for CEOs.

The former "Saturday Night Live" writer - who bombed on the big screen with "Stuart Saves His Family" (1995) and on the small screen with "Lateline" (1998) - kept occupied for the past eight years as a lackey for the Clintons, writing gags for the president and emceeing fundraisers. But now with Dubya in the White House, Franken has too much time on his hands, so he has launched a campaign against the anchors on Fox News. Franken has nit-picked Bill O'Reilly - whose "Inside Edition" won a Polk Award, rather than a Peabody, as O'Reilly had claimed - and Fred Barnes for allegedly stealing the crack that Bush's honeymoon "would be shorter than Darva Conger's."
