He used to be known as Mitch Maddox, until the 26-year old legally changed his name to DotComGuy, shut himself up in his house on Jan. 1, and vowed to not come out for a year. Never heard of him? He's the guy who buys all his clothes, furniture, food, electronics, videos, CDs, and pet food for a beagle named DotComDog, of course on the Internet. If it sounded ridiculous when the scheme was announced, it's not sounding so silly now to some retailers and industry analysts. Online grocer Peopod Inc. and soon-to-be clothing retailer Fossil have become official sponsors of his effort, adding their names to established company sponsors that include United Parcel Service and 3Com. And U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray featured DotComGuy at an investor conference in June. DotComGuy's angle is that he has built some solid e-tailing expertise after being shut up in his Dallas apartment for seven months, buying everything he needs on the Net. He has plenty of firsthand experience for retailing giants trying to make a go of it on the Net.
