Marion Davies (1897-1961) Marion Davies was born Marion Cecilia Douras in Brooklyn, New York on January 3, 1897. She was the youngest of five children born to Bernard and Rose Douras.
Watching her sister achieve success in show business turned Marion's inclinations toward a career in drama early in her life. After leaving school she became a sought-after model for the famous painters of the day. She assumed the stage name of Marion Davies and quickly established herself as a talented actress.
By the time she first met William Randolph Hearst she had already made a name for herself acting on Broadway. Between 1915 and 1917 she appeared in "Chin-Chin," "Stop, Look and Listen," "Ziegfield Follies," "Betty," "Words and Music," "Miss 1917," and "Oh Boy." Her first encounter with Hearst came while acting in the "Ziegfield Follies."
Her brother-in-law George Lederer directed her first film, "Runaway Romany," supposedly written and scripted by Davies herself. In 1918, shortly after meeting Hearst for the first time, she starred in "Cecilia of the Pink Roses," a film backed by Hearst. From this point on, she was the most advertised actress in the world.

Marion Davies is better known as the mistress of William Randolph Hearst, than an actress, but judging by the glimpses of her few films that are available this looks unfair. The massive amounts of publicity created by Hearst for Marion probably did her more harm than good with the antagonism she received from the movie industry. She was born in January 1897 in Brooklyn, New York, she entered the movies in 1917, when Hearst opened The Cosmopolitan Picture Company, which made and financed her movies for the rest of her career. Over the next ten years Marions film career met with mixed success, highlights being "Little Old New York" (1923), "Janice Meredith" (1924), "Zander The Great" (1925) and the superb "Show People" (1928), which included cameos by Douglas Fairbanks, John Gilbert and Charles Chaplin. Marion made her last film in 1937 and was then embroiled in controversy with the release of Orson Welles film "Citizen Kane" (1941) which mirrored to a degree the lives of Marion and W R Hearst and depicted Susan Alexander Kane(Marion) as weak and untalented. Marion and Hearst were together for thirty years, until his death, then she married ten weeks later and became a successful business woman. Marion died in September 1961, her autobiography "The Times We Had" was released posthumously in 1976 from audio tapes that she had left behind.

Her career spanned some forty-five feature films with co-stars such as Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard, Dick Powell and Robert Montgomery. Known in the silent era as one of the screen's most prolific clowns, Marion was one of the few silent stars to survive the transition to talkies. History often remembers Marion only for her association with magnate William Randolph Hearst, their story is truly one of America's greatest love stories of all time. One of the most loved stars in Hollywood, Marion was the socialite of her era, often hosting grand parties with themes such as the circus, wild west or the baby party in which everyone came dressed as children. She was also among the most giving of the Hollywood crowd, building two children's hospitals and establishing a foundation to care for them long after her death.

MARION DAVIES
The Love of William Randolph Hearst!
Marion Cecelia Douras (Marion Davies) was born in the borough of Brooklyn, New York on January 3, 1897. She had been bitten by the "show biz bug" early as she watched her sisters perform in local stage productions. She wanted to do the same. As Marion got older, she tried out for various school plays and did fairly well. Once her formal education had ended, Marion started out as a chorus girl in New York City and eventually found herself in the famed Ziegfeld Follies. But she wanted more than to dance. Acting, to Marion, was the epitome of show business and aimed her sights in that direction. Her first film was RUNAWAY ROMANY in 1917 when she was 20. It was a film written by herself and directed by her brother-in-law. The film wasn't exactly a box-office smash, but for Marion it was a start. The film was, instead, a stepping stone to bigger things. The following year Marion starred in two films, THE BURDEN OF PROOF and CECILIA OF THE PINK ROSES. It was this latter film that was backed by newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst, whom Marion would launch a long term romantic relationship for the next 30 years. Because of Hearst's newspaper empire, Marion would be promoted as no actress before her. She appeared in numerous films over the next few years with CINEMA MURDER, in 1919, being one of the most suspenseful.

Marion Davies was born Marion Douras in Brooklyn, New York on January 3rd, 1897. She had strong leanings toward the stage during her school days as she watched her sisters achieve success in show business. Upon leaving school she found herself in demand as a model for famous painters of the day. By the time William Randolph Hearst, America's most famous publisher, met her she had already made a name for herself on the Broadway stage. In the years 1915 to 1917 she appeared in "Chin-Chin," "Stop Look and Listen," "Ziegfeld Follies," "Betty," "Words and Music," "Miss 1917," and "Oh Boy." Her first film was "Runaway Romany" directed by her brother-in-law, George Lederer. Supposedly she had written the script herself. "Cecilia of the Pink Roses" in 1918 was her first film backed by Hearst. She was on her way to being the most famously advertised actress in the world. During the next ten years she appeared in twenty-nine films, an average of almost three films a year. She was a tireless worker, always trying to live up to the relentless promotional campaigns launched by Hearst.

Marion the Chatelaine
Marion Davies (1897-1961) Marion Davies was born Marion Cecilia Douras in Brooklyn, NY in 1897. Davies met William Randolph Hearst while she was in the Zeigfeld Follies. She became his mistress and remained so until his death in 1951. Hearst attempted to make her a star, but unfortunately insisted on serious roles when her talent lay in comedy. Hearst's production company, Cosmopolitan, was founded primarily for Davies' films, and it eventually was absorbed by MGM. At MGM, Davies became a vehicle for Louis Mayer's search for power. He treated her well, lavishing money and attention on her, even giving her a private bungalow on the lot. Some people felt that these rewards exceeded her worth as an actress, but not the value of the MGM publicity in the Hearst papers. Davies moved to Warner's when she didn't get to play Elizabeth Barrett Browning, but retired from films shortly thereafter. Heart was offended by the portrayal of Davies in Citizen Kane (although Davies herself did not seem to mind). Hearst publications boycotted the movie, and it received little of the publicity it would have otherwise received. Davies stood beside Hearst as his finances and health began to fail, offering all the gifts he had given her for his support. It is accepted that they both had deep feelings for each other. She was shunned by his family, however, and was not allowed to attend his funeral.
