JILL DANDO 1961 - 1999 "The Golden Girl of Television" Jill was born in Weston-super-Mare and started her career as a newspaper journalist on the Mercury . Her experience as a member of the local amateur dramatic society helped her to develop the skills she would later need. She soon became a household name, fronting programmes such as the Six O'Clock News, Breakfast News, Crimewatch and Holiday. Not since Diana, Princess of Wales has the Nation been so affected by such a tragic and wasteful loss of life. JILL DANDO FUND PAYS FOR HOSPICE CONSULTANT By Cathy Mayer, PA News Release Date: 26 April 2001 A hospice is marking the second anniversary of Jill Dando's death today with the appointment of a new consultant. Weston Hospicecare has earmarked money raised by donations to a charity fund in the TV presenter's memory for a full-time consultant in palliative medicine. Miss Dando was Patron of the hospice, which helps cancer sufferers and their families from her home town of Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding area. The 37-year-old presenter was shot dead on the doorstep of her home in Fulham, west London, on April 26, 1999. Colin Sills, General Manager of the hospice, said they had not wanted to spend the money on a symbol but to use it for something which would actually help people. He said: "People gave a substantial amount of money in memory of Jill. That fund has been very much to provide care for local people as Jill would have wanted." It was not felt that an object such as a statue would have been appropriate. "There are many memories of Jill's involvement, lots of photos around Hospicecare, but they are low-key in comparison to this."

Jill was a West Country girl. She was born and brought up there; and that's where she spent her early working years. She was reluctant to leave the West Country for London; but when she did she would never forget her roots. She would always stay close to her West Country friends and to her family - her brother and her Dad - and she would never stop grieving the loss of her mother. Jill was Head Girl at school, and worked as a reporter in the West Country - on newspapers, then radio and television. She was proud to be a journalist, and would forever regard it as the bedrock of her career. 'She made difficult things look easy' When Jill joined the BBC, she enjoyed immediate and striking success. In rapid progression she presented Breakfast Time; the Six O'Clock News; Holiday; and Crimewatch. Jill was unusually versatile and never out-of-place - whether in a holiday camp or in a newsroom. Jill became a professional of great accomplishment. She made difficult things look easy: talking whilst making a tricky traverse across a studio floor; presenting whilst waterskiing; or doing a long link to camera for the Holiday programme whilst roller-blading at speed.
