Well, he's also a stand up comedian, and this record is a live performance of him doing his thing. The story behind the listen goes as follows: The great and powerful Kimber passes the record to me, and says "…hey, while you're driving to Vegas this weekend, why don't you review this too…" I, of course, agree, seeing as there is no other alternative, and set out on my long perilous journey to reach Sin City. Just outside of Wickenburg, I pop it in, and by the time I am in Wickenburg, 45 minutes later, I am laughing so hard, I'm crying, weeping for my mentality and my safety. As I haphazardly pull into the less than famed Subway/Chevron, I stumble out of the truck, just in time for relief, and succeed at locating the restroom facilities. It went on like that for the remainder of the 5 hour drive. Cross had his audience in hysterics most of the night, and I was particularly fond of the, winged, cell phone bit. It's sardonic at the least and borderline depressing at times, only because of the subjects he draws his humor from (i.e. 9/11 and dumb rednecks), but he makes up for any down moments by releasing his comedic kung-fu all over that microphone. Any of you who are fans of Mr. Show, must check it out immediately.

Sub Pop 2002 has seen an embarrassment of riches for fans of comedian David Cross. A stand-up tour, DVDs of his much missed HBO sketch comedy series, Mr. Show , a live Mr. Show tour of theatres, and now this two-CD set of stand-up recorded in the spring in Portland, Oregon and Atlanta, Georgia. And yeah, I know, when was the last time you bought a comedy album? For me I think it was a Sam Kinison record back in the '80s. This one however is worth both the price of admission and the investment of time. The comedy begins with a glance at the CD's track listing, which with titles like "Welfare Dentist on a Bender," does nothing to belie the contents. Cross talks about being raised Jewish and becoming an atheist in Atlanta, the land of Southern Baptists. Indeed he saves his sharpest words for organized religion. "Tribal, superstitious nonsense," he calls the Bible. "Where are the unicorns?" he asks. The Catholic Church also gets skewered. "I don't know if you guys have noticed lately but seriously in the last couple months, the Catholic Church has gotten a whole lot sexier," he says. He talks about life in his new home of New York as being constantly faced with an urgent, quick decision: "Oh my God, do I look at the most beautiful woman in the world or the craziest guy in the world?" He describes his experiences in the apocalyptic landscape of post-9/11 Manhattan and the strange sight of a guy roller-blading down the street wearing a gas mask. He also has choice words for Los Angeles and its "non-stop parade of delusion."

But, his latest comedy album, a two-disc set entitled Shut Up You Fucking Baby! , the first comedy release on Sub Pop (yes, the label best known for their 'grunge'), is too inconsistent to be a winner. It has some damn funny bits, but, overall, is bogged down by swearing for filler, a technique Cross employs to get the crowd pumped up as they have fun and forget what they're hearing. (Sub Pop) SEE ALSO: George Carlin, Lenny Bruce David Cross, of HBO's Mr. Show notoriety, refers to his stand-up routine as "rambling on and on in an amusing drunk-at-a-party way." Recorded over last spring's tour, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! contains a wide array of satirical, misanthropic observations that teasingly tell the audience Cross doesn't give a damn if anyone is offended. His two-hour performance includes derisions of racist rednecks ("The South has a certain kind of ignorance that is deeper and truer, more unwavering and steadfast, than any ignorance that the rest of the country has"), corporate radio DJs ("The same two motherfuckin' asshole clowns"), and Hollywood ("The best/worst/best again part of Hollywood is the non-stop parade of delusion you get to see"). Despite the frequent hilarity, much of Cross' commentary is too topical to withstand future listens. His liberal rants on the war on terrorism and President Bush ("We're all treating him like he came in third place in the Special Olympics") may be off-putting to some. There is also a newly published behind-the -scenes look at his cult sketch comedy show ( "Mr. Show" ) and Cross recently appeared at a Autism fundraiser called "Clash of the Titans" alongside his Mr. Show alumni and Janeane Garafolo Triumph the Insult Comic dog and the Kids in the Hall (here is a related auction and show review ).
