document.write(''); WebMuseum, Paris: William Marritt Chase Brooklyn Museum of Art William Merritt Chase Praised by critics, admired by colleagues and respected by students, the distinguished 19th-century artist produced paintings and pastels of gentle beauty. William Merritt Chase dominated the universe of American art during the late 19th century. He was one of the first artists to turn out Impressionist landscapes in the United States, a portrait painter of the first rank, a master of still life, a renowned teacher, a leader of societies of artists, and a gifted connoisseur of European painting. He also knew everyone who counted in American art. Chase had studied at the Royal Academy in Munich and adopted the dark, lush colors and bold brushwork that characterized the prevailing style there. In the late 1880s, however, he changed his approach and turned to the brighter, lighter palette and shorter brushstrokes of the French Impressionists. He also took his canvases and easel out-of-doors to directly capture scenes of American life. Some 30 paintings from this period are currently on view in the exhibition "William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes." Organized by Barbara Dayer Gallati of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the show, which is at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston through March 11, 2001, features early Impressionist coastal scenes, and cityscapes and parks in Manhattan and Brooklyn. One of the most prominent art teachers of his day, Chase was also the founder of the Chase School of Art (now the Parsons School of Design) in New York. The roster of his students included such future luminaries as Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper and Rockwell Kent. "William Merritt Chase's teaching, like the British drumbeat," declared the Chicago Post, "is heard round the world."

The life of William Merritt Chase is very much a model for progressive American artists of the period. He spent as much time abroad as he did in his native land, and when at home was a tireless promoter of new art through the organization of various art societies. His activities did much to bring art in America out of its deep provinciality. In 1872, following three years of study at the National Academy of Design in New York, Chase entered the Munich Royal Academy, from where he traveled Europe and established his reputation by successfully exhibiting in London and Munich as well as in New York. By the time he returned to the United States, he was already well known. Sunlight and Shadow was painted in Zandvoort, Holland, where Chase stayed with his artist friend Robert Blum (the model for the seated man) for the summer. The picture, a turning point in Chase's career, is a subtle balance of Impressionist-inspired observation and implied storytelling.

William Merritt Chase Portrait of a Gentleman, undated Oil on canvas, 22 x 18 in. Gift of Lynn G. Foster The Indiana-born William Merritt Chase studied art briefly with an Indianapolis painter before going to New York City for further education. Of paramount importance to his artistic development was his training in Munich from 1872 until 1878. It was there that Chase, along with fellow student Frank Duveneck, adopted the technique of the Munich School characterized by rich and direct brushwork and a dark palette derived from such seventeenth-century artists as Frans Hals (1580/6-1666) and Diego Velasquez (1599-1660). Upon returning to New York in 1878, Chase began his teaching career at the Art Students League, one that would last until 1894. He taught at numerous other institutions, including the Brooklyn Art School, the Shinnecock Art School, Long Island, and his own Chase School in New York City from 1896 until 1908. However, its dark tones and flashy brushwork suggest the influence of the Munich School, strongest before 1887, when he turned to a lighter, more impressionistic palette. The unfinished state of this work is valuable in revealing Chase's technique and teaching method. Generally, wherever he taught, Chase would paint a portrait every few weeks in front of the class. One of his students recorded just such an episode:

Chase, William Merritt
Chase, William Merritt (1849-1916). American painter. He settled in New York in 1878 after five years studying in Munich and became the most important American teacher of his generation. He taught at the Art Students' League of New York and then at his own Chase School of Art, founded in 1896. The vigorous handling and fresh color characteristic of much of the best American painting of the early 20th century owes a good deal to his example. His pupils (whom he encouraged to paint in the open air) included Demuth, O'Keefe, and Sheeler. Chase was a highly prolific artist (his output of more than 2000 paintings included still lifes, portraits, interiors, and landscapes), and his work is represented in many American museums.
