Biography

James Earl Carter, Jr., (1924- ), 39th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . In 1976 the Democratic party chose Jimmy Carter as its nominee for president, and the American people elected him to that office over the incumbent president, Gerald FORD , bringing to a climax the most meteoric rise in modern U. S. politics. In choosing Jimmy Carter (he preferred to use Jimmy rather than James Earl), the voters gained a president about whom they knew little, and one who prided himself on being relatively unknown outside his home state of Georgia. He had never been a national candidate and had no significant experience on the national scene or any close ties to Washington. Furthermore, as a candidate from the Deep South, he was distrusted by many in the NEW DEAL coalition that had dominated the DEMOCRATIC PARTY since 1932. At the time of his ELECTION , Carter was something of an enigma to the American people. By the time he was nominated to run for a second term, that enigmatic quality remained and was an underlying issue in the election of 1980. Early Career Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Ga., on Oct. 1, 1924, to James Earl Carter and Lillian Gordy Carter. The eldest of four children, he grew up near Plains, where his father farmed and operated a small country store. Carter attended school in Plains and in 1935 was baptized into the First Baptist Church of Plains, a conservative and evangelical denomination that strongly influenced his life. Even so, he did not embrace the conservative political philosophy of his church, although in the 1976 campaign he made much of being a born-again Christian. His father, a traditional Southerner, would not receive blacks into his home, but his mother, far more liberal on social and racial issues, had a greater impact on Carter's social conscience.

Born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Ga., he attended Georgia Tech and the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1946. He married Rosalynn Smith on July 7, 1946, and they had four children. After the death of his father, however, he resigned (1953) his commission to manage the family's peanut-farming business. He was a state senator (1962-66) and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1966. In his second attempt (1970), Carter was elected governor and served one term (1971-75). Presidential Campaign In 1972, Carter began a 4-year campaign for the DEMOCRATIC presidential nomination. In 1976 he established a commanding lead over other candidates by winning the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire PRIMARY . He established a solid base in the South and among black voters and went on to win the Democratic nomination. For his running mate he chose a liberal, Sen. Walter F. MONDALE The presidential campaign of 1976 turned chiefly upon the state of the national economy, the personalities of the two candidates, and the desirability of change in the

After one term in office, voters strongly rejected Jimmy Carter’s honest but gloomy outlook in favor of Ronald Reagan’s "morning in America" telegenic optimism. In the past two decades, however, there has been wider recognition that Carter, despite a lack of experience, confronted several huge problems with steadiness, courage, and idealism. Along with his predecessor Gerald Ford, Carter must be given credit for restoring the balance to the constitutional system after the excesses of the Johnson and Nixon "imperial presidency."

JIMMY CARTER U.S. President Name at birth: James Earl Carter, Jr. Jimmy Carter grew up on a farm in Georgia and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. After working with the nuclear submarine program, he resigned his commission in 1953 and returned to farming. In 1962 he entered local politics and by 1971 was elected Governor of Georgia. In the presidential election of 1976 Carter, a dark horse candidate of the Democratic party, defeated incumbent Gerald R. Ford . Although he worked hard to champion human rights and responsible government, his term was dogged by high inflation, high unemployment and an energy crisis. As if that weren't bad enough, the last fourteen months of his term were doomed by an ongoing hostage situation at the U.S. Embassy in Iran. Carter and Vice President Walter Mondale ran for a second term in 1980, but they were defeated by Republicans Ronald Reagan and George Bush . Since leaving office, Carter has worked internationally for the disenfranchised, fighting hunger and poverty through a variety of non-profit organizations. In 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his years of humanitarian work.

Few U.S. Presidents have had such close ties with where they were born and raised. The rural southern culture of Plains, Georgia, that revolves around farming, church and school, had a large influence in molding the character and in shaping the political policies of the 39th President of the United States. The site includes President Carter’s residence, boyhood farm, school, and the railroad depot, which served as his campaign headquarters during the 1976 election. The Plains High School serves as the park’s museum and visitor center. The Jimmy Carter National Preservation District includes part of the town of Plains and its environs. The area surrounding the residence is under the protection of the Secret Service and the home is not open to the public. The Carters returned to Plains in January 1981. The former President and First Lady pursue many of the goals of the administration through The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, which has programs to alleviate human suffering and to promote human rights and world peace. When they are in Plains, Carter teaches Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church to which the public is invited. The Carters’ ties to Plains have endured the stresses of public life, remaining as strong as they were decades ago. more...

    1930's 1940's 1950's ... 1990's January 3, 1977
    I'm Jimmy Carter, and...
Just a year ago, he was walking up to men and women who did not know he existed, shaking their hands and drawling, "I'm Jimmy Carter, and I'm going to be your next President." The notion seemed preposterous, and most political professionals were dead sure he did not have a chancebut none of the voters laughed in his face. He was such an engaging mana trifle shy, for all his gall, and there was that sunburst of a smile that people would always remember. Right from the start, he was perceived as being a rather different kind of politician compared with the rest of the fieldas different on philosophy and tactics, it was to turn out, as in personal style. He not only knew what he wanted; he also sensed, at least in the primary elections, what the American people wanted. The result was something of a political miracle. On Jan. 20 he will place his left palm on the Bible and raise his right hand. Then, in the now familiar soft and even tones of south Georgia, Jimmy Carter, 52, will take the oath that will make himjust as he was saying all alongthe 39th President of the U.S. After all that has been said and written about him during a long campaign, he is still an enigma to millions of Americans, including many who voted for him. He is complex and sometimes contradictory. His creed combines traditionally antithetical elements of help-the-deprived populism and deny-thyself fiscal conservatism. A Harris poll last month reported that 61% of those surveyed expect Carter to be a good or excellent President. Despite that hope, the people are waiting to be shown by Jimmy Cater, to see if he really has the wisdom and judgment and balance needed to succeed in the job that he so eagerly sought for two exhausting years.
