His music, refined and skillfully written, influenced by French impressionism, often conveys the spirit and the scenes of American life in such works as the orchestral suite Adventures in a Perambulator (1914) and the ballets Krazy Kat (Chicago, 1921) and Skyscrapers (New York, 1926). A Spanish flavor and jazz, frequently elements in his music, are both found in Patterns (1932) for orchestra. CARPENTER, JOHN W. Previous Next Biography: CARPENTER, JOHN W. The name John Carpenter appears on page 9 of the San Jacinto rolls printed in 1836 as a member of Captain William H. Smith's Company of Cavalry. The name J. W. Carpenter is shown on page 15 of the rolls as a member of Captain Hayden Arnold's Nacogdoches Company. The compiler is convinced that John W. Carpenter, a member or Captain Arnold's Company was transferred to the cavalry for the battle and thus had his name entered through error on two rolls. The compiler has removed the name from the cavalry company. The records of the General Land Office do not show that John Carpenter received either headright, bounty, or donation land. It is shown on page 115 of the army rolls in the General Land Office that when John A. Carpenter swore allegiance to the government of Texas January 14, 1836 he gave his age as 29 and the place of his birth as Tennessee. In the headright certificate issued to him February 1, 1838 for a league and labor of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for San Augustine County it is stated that he came to Texas in 1835. On December 28, 1840 Donation Certificate No. 1104 for 640 acres of land was issued to John W Carpenter for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. Bounty Certificate No. 2531 for 320 acres of land was issued to John W. Carpenter March 3, 1833 for having served in the army from March 7 to June 6, 1836. He was living in San Augustine County April 5, 1830 when he sold the certificate to James Perkins for $100.00.

From his early low-budget genre explorationsthe science-fiction parody Dark Star , the Rio Bravo homage Assault On Precinct 13 , the horror classic Halloween to acclaimed movies like Starman , his remake of The Thing , and cult favorites Escape From L.A. John Carpenter John Carpenter nasce il 16 gennaio del 1948 a Bowling Green nel Kentucky. I suoi primi lavori sono proprio dei mediometraggi di fantascienza in cui ha prevalere sono soprattutto gli effetti speciali piuttosto che la trama, pero' a differenza di altri grandi registi che si sono ispirati per i loro film a autori stranieri, John ha preferito restare in patria seguendo principalmente John Ford e Haward Hawks. Gira ben 11 cortometraggi riguardanti questo genere, e con "The resurrection of Bronco Billy" vince addirittura l'Oscar. In questo cortometraggio il protagonista e' un ragazzo che fugge dalla realta' e si rifugia in una dimensione in cui si trasforma in un cowboy. Dopo aver conosciuto Dan O' Bannon , nel 1970 progetta con lui il suo primo film di fantascienza: "Dark Star" che presenta come sua tesi di laurea e con il quale conclude con successo il suo corso di studi ( anche se nasce una disputa tra John e l'universita' per i diritti del film).

Carpenter was the founder and first president of Lone Star Steel; this company's contribution to the development of East Texas earned him the East Texas Achievement Award for 1953. He served as president of Dallas Railway and Terminal Company (1927-35) and Texas Refrigeration and Ice Company (1945-49). In all, Carpenter managed or organized nearly twenty-five major companies in the Southwest, including eleven utility companies and the St. Louis and Southwestern Railway Company. Carpenter served as president of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce for two terms, chairman of the board of the Southwestern Legal Foundation, vice president of the State Fair of Texas, qv a director of the National Safety Council and the Southwest Research Institute, qv and chairman of an organizing committee that established the National Conference of Christians and Jews in the Southwest.
