CAMERON HARVEY Faculty Directory PERSONAL PROFILE Faculty of Law Homepage Since 1977 Professor Harvey has been the Chairman of the Land Value Appraisal Commission of Manitoba. At various times during the 1960s and 70s and 80s Professor Harvey chaired the Municipal Law, and Wills and Trusts Subsections of the Manitoba Bar Association and served as course head for Wills and Estates in the Law Society of Manitoba Bar Admission Programme. Among his significant publications Professor Harvey counts his books on Habeas Corpus, The Law Society of Manitoba, Chief Justice Samuel Freedman, an anthology of legal humour, Legal Wit and Whimsy, Agency, and Dependants Relief, as well as a seminal article on women in law in Canada, an article about Lord Denning, and the provisional plan for Greater Winnipeg of the Local Government Boundaries Commission in 1970. Thompson Award at Dean College Commencement FRANKLIN, MA - U.S. Congressman James McGovern will accept the prestigious Cameron S. Thompson Award for Distinguished Service at Dean College commencement ceremonies on May 11. The 136th commencement will take place at 1 p.m. on the lawn in front of Dean Hall, 99 Main St. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the Multipurpose Room of the Campus Center on Emmons Street. Established in 1977 to recognize notable achievement in public life, in scholarly endeavor, or for the advancement of public welfare, the award is made at the discretion of the president of Dean College with the consent of the college's board of trustees. It is named for Cameron S. Thompson, Dean Academy Class of 1917, who served for more than 40 years as a Dean trustee and made numerous civic contributions while leading a major New England business enterprise, Jordan Marsh. Corporate Culture, Downsizing and Forgiveness Dr. Kim Cameron, Case Western Reserve University Can a corporation be more successful after downsizing if it asks for forgiveness from its employees? Everyone's heard the urban myth of the downsized executive who seeks revenge against the boss who fired her. But in the cut-back culture of the 1990s, what happens to the workers who're left to deal with downsize fallout? The echoes of a sudden spate of lay-offs reverberate far beyond the people who are asked to clear their desks, according to Dr. Kim Cameron, Dean of the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. In many downsized companies, he says, insecurity and anger dominate the corporate culture - often with devastating effects. Cameron has spent the last fifteen years studying what happens to downsized companies. "As far as the workers are concerned, these organizations have violated the trust developed between them," he says. "Downsizing, in their view, is unfair, unethical, and hurtful." While some see a short-term rise in value, most of the companies studied by Cameron experience long-term problems, including attrition and reduced productivity. "Some employees reach for the phone, dial a headhunter and quit the next day," he says. "Others put their heads down and panic when management meets, terrified their heads will roll. Others just miss their friends. But deep down, everyone wonders who'll be next."
