An excerpt from NFT issue #7:
"Sampling Kept the Funk Alive"
Trombonist Fred Wesley, probably James Brown's and Parliafunkadelicment's most influential horn arranger, released his first jazz album NEW FRIENDS in 1991 - which is when the NFT did the following interview.
New Funk Times: Maceo's first jazz album was called ROOTS REVISITED. Do you think that this description would fit your album as well? Fred Wesley: I guess you could say that, it did involve some things that helped me grow to what I am now. New Funk Times: What was the first kind of music that you played, did you start out with jazz? Fred Wesley: New Funk Times: Was the trombone your first instrument? Fred Wesley: Actually, I started out on piano. My grandma was a piano teacher, so at age three I was sitting there playing my scales, the "Minute Waltz", Rachmaninow's "Prelude in D-Minor". But I never really wanted to play the piano because the guy I most admired in my father's band was the trombone player named Henry Freeman. He was such a gregarious type of person, he always laughed and played with me, and I wanted to be just like him when I grew up. He played trombone, so naturally I wanted to play the trombone to be like Mr. Freeman! After going through the trumpet for a little while I eventually got to trombone. And incidentally, some of the things I play is sort of from Freeman style, even today. New Funk Times: Jumping to the present: How was working with Deee-Lite?

Biography

James Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina, as an only child in 1933 . His father was a filling station attendant. When James was four, his parents separated and he grew up in the brothel of his aunt, a poor woman in Augusta, Georgia. Brown left school in the seventh grade. He picked cotton, was a shoe-shine boy, washed cars and dishes and swept out stores. At the age of 16, he took part in an armed robbery and was caught breaking into a car. James was sentenced to eight to sixteen years' hard labor. He served a short period in the county jail before being transferred to juvenile work farms. He spent three years in a community home.
Afterwards, he tried to work as a boxer. His ambitions to make a career as a baseball pitcher ended with a leg injury. He had been a pitcher for the prison team and that's where he first met Bobby Byrd who played against him in a local game.
The Famous Flames caught the attention of King Records and, in April 1956, they released the single

Since then, the talented film maker has been virtually invisible, surfacing briefly as a co-director of the wildly uneven Four Rooms and the screenwriter of the gory vampire-fest, From Dusk Till Dawn . In between, he has moonlighted as an "actor" with several decidedly unmemorable performances. Now, with much fanfare and anticipation, Tarantino has returned with his third directorial effort, Jackie Brown . And, while this motion picture, adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel

BROWN, JAMES MOREAU (1821-1895). James Moreau Brown, businessman, was born in Orange County, New York, on September 22, 1821, the son of John M. and Hannah (Krantz) Brown. The family moved to New York City when Brown was a child. As a teenager he drove a canal boat along the Erie Canal, working with Charley Mallory, later of the Mallory Steamship Lines. He also served an apprenticeship as a brickmason and plasterer and developed ability as an architect. After his apprenticeship Brown traveled in the South. He stayed for a while in New Orleans and then lived for several years in Vicksburg, where he prospered financially. In 1843 he moved to Galveston, Texas, where he influenced the building of first brick jail and the old market. In 1848 he was elected an alderman. He entered the hardware business in 1847, then formed a partnership in 1850 with Stephen Kirkland, a blacksmith. Kirkland reportedly built the first hook and ladder truck in Texas. Brown was an original member of the first Galveston volunteer fire brigade, organized in October 1843. When Kirkland died in 1859, Brown closed the business and became president of the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad. For his help in transporting men from Houston to help recapture Galveston from Union troops, Gen. John B. Magruder qv rewarded him with the honorary title of colonel. Brown also served the Confederacy as a purchasing agent in Mexico. After the war he resigned from the presidency of the railroad and engaged in the wholesale hardware business in partnership with J. W. Lang. In 1875 Lang sold out to Brown, who then admitted his son J. S. Brown to full partnership in the firm, the name of which was changed to J. S. Brown and Company. The firm became one of the largest enterprises of its kind in the South. After the war Brown also designed and supervised the construction of the First National Bank of Galveston, which was organized in 1866.

Over 30 years after Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, Memphis and TV Judge Joe Brown unveiled new information on the murder weapon: the fatal bullets found in King does not match those found in the gun. The King family claims that Jowers, who owned a cafe that overlooked the Memphis motel, where King was shot to death, participated in an assassination plot that was allegedly hatched in his place of business. The suit is based largely on a 1993 television interview where Jowers, 73, claimed that mobsters offered him $100,000 to get King killed. According to the suit, Jowers was part of a plot that involved "other unknown conspirators" in King's slaying. Jowers' attorney agrees that there was a conspiracy to kill King. However, the defense claims that Jowers did not know King was the target when he became involved in the murder plot. Jowers also has said that Memphis police officers and the late Frank C. Liberto, a Memphis produce company operator, were also involved in the plot to kill King.

He is the most influential artist of our time and is responsible for reshaping the sound of R&B music. He has been accredited as to having laid the essential foundation of 'funk' music and is the most sampled artist of all times. Brown was born into poverty during the mist of the Great Depression in Barnwell, South Carolina. At the tender age of four his parents separated and he was sent to live with his Aunt who ran a brothel in Augusta, Georgia. As a small child, he would "hustle" men off of the street and into his Aunt's "house of ill repute." Young James also earned spare change by working in coal yards, selling bottle caps and dancing on street corners for soldiers. Brown never received a formal education. He dropped out of school in the 7th grade.

Issue 44 Television Sportscasters (African-American)
Opportunities for African-American sportscasters have been extremely limited until recently. While studio analyst jobs have been available to former pro athletes who happen to be black, the top sports journalism jobs, such as play-by-play announcer, have overwhelmingly gone to white males. In 1989 CBS had two black play-by-play announcers and ABC and NBC had none. CBS sportscaster James Brown said at that time, "I firmly believe people hire in their own likeness, so that's what network executives always have done....All we're asking for is an opportunity to succeed and fail like everyone else." (1) The situation hadn't improved much by 1993. No African-American had yet been designated as a network's top play-by-play announcer. Said Brown, "In the studio, yes. There have been big strides. But No. 1 play-by-play is almost the same as being the quarterback. He's the traffic cop. That's what everybody who does play-by-play strives for. It hasn't ever happened. It's only right that it does. There are enough talented people out there. The talent pool is there to make it happen. It should happen." (2) Only in the past few years have sportscasters such as Greg Gumbel and Robin Roberts moved into truly prestigious network positions. Here are their profiles along with three others:
