Initially I worked in the construction Industry - first as a quantity surveyor and then as a site engineer and land surveyor. I have worked in marketing and sales. Discover... Barton upon Humber St Peter's Church This fine church has the most remarkable Anglo-Saxon tower and baptistry in the country. The church was erected in the late 10th century on the site of an earlier Christian cemetery. It was possibly the family chapel of a Saxon Lord of Barton, who lived in a hall on the site of Tyrwhitt Hall. It consisted of a baptistry, chancel and tower-nave with space for a congregation of up to 30 people. After the Norman Conquest, the little Saxon chancel was demolished and a new aisless nave and chancel were built in the Romanesque style. Additions over the centuries have given the church a rich and varied architectural style. Its history is a delight to discover with the help of English Heritage's informative displays which are based on extensive archaeological excavation. St Peter's Church has many unusual features including a window which is carved into its tracery the figures of Christ on the Cross, Mary and John. The church is owned by English Heritage and there is a permanent exhibition inside. Access is via the entrance on the pathway along the south side of the church.
