Erfurt can look back on a long family tradition of the Bachs. Three sons of Hans Bach, the "Music Player of Wechmar", founded the tradition as early as the 17th century: Johann, Christoph and Heinrich were town pipers and council musicians and Johann Bach was organist at the same time at the Prediger Church. His son Ägidius later had the office in the Kaufmann Church and the Church of St. Michael. Heinrich then went to Arnstadt, and Christoph, Johann Sebastian's grandfather had three sons in Erfurt: Georg Christoph, Johann Christoph and Johann Ambrosius, the father of Johann Sebastian Bach. He married Elisabeth Lämmerhirt in 1668 in the Kaufmann Church. She was related to the mother of the Weimar organist Johann Gottfried Walther, who was later befriended with Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach himself was here once in 1716 to test the organ in the Augustiner Church and probably more often to visit his relatives. For in Erfurt too, the traditional family get-togethers took place. However a longer stay of Bach here is not known.

Miguel, en Lüneburgo, quizás recomendado por su maestro Elías Herder, y en atención a su dedicación a la música y asu excepcional voz de soprano en este lugar permaneció ters años, llegando a desempeñar el cargo de "Prefecto de los niños del Coro", y teniendo en ocasiones, oportunidad de actuar no solamente como organista, sino como director del propio coro. A los dieciocho años ocupó un puesto como violinista en la orquesta del conde Juan Ernesto de Weimar, donde permaneció algunos meses. En 1703 pasó como maestro de capilla a Arnstadt, donde tuvo tiempo suficiente para dedicarse al órgano y a la composición. Estando en este lugar hizo el viaje a Lübeck para oír al gran organista Buxtehude, pidiendo, para tal fin, cuatro semanas de permiso, que se convirtieron en tres meses: por este comportamiento recibió una reprimenda del Consistorio Condal, (de la que se conserva el acta correspondiente), a la cual contestó que "estuvo en Lübeck para imponerse allí de diversas cuestiones relacionadas con su arte... " En el mismo documento se le llama la atención por no querer atender el "Coro de Niños", ocupación a la cual se revelaría toda su vida. En 1707, se transladó a Mulhausen, como organista de la iglesia de S. Blas, tomando posesión el 15 de junio. El 17 de octubre del mismo año contrajo matrimonio con su prima María Bárbara Bach. En 1708 vuelve a Weimar como organista y músico de cámara del dque reinante. Su estancia se prolonga hasta 1717. En esta etapa de su vida el repertorio del órgano y de diversos instrumentos reciben la magistral aportación de J.S. Bach: entre las composiciones de este período figuran la "Toccata y fuga en re menor" y la monumental "Pasacalle en do menor".

Site Johann Ernst Bach (of Arnstadt ): 1683-after 1728 Called Johann Ernst "of Arnstadt" so as not to confuse him with Sebastian's second cousin by the same name, this first cousin is remembered chiefly as the unfortunate individual whom Sebastion appointed to fulfill his duties during his extended leave to Lübeck. Earlier, when Sebastian was living in Lüneburg, Johann Ernst had sojourned in nearby Hamburg for six months during which it is possible that he may have introduced Sebastian to the musical circles of that city. When Sebastian left Arnstadt for Mühlhausen, Ernst succeeded him as organist at the Jacobikirche . In 1728 he was appointed organist of the Liebfrauenkirche a less-than-enthusiastic hire as the Consistory felt compelled to admonish Ernst: "to exercise himself still better in his art, to improve himself as much as possible by due reflection, not to remain always at one level, but to cultivate his skill by diligent correspondence with one and another among experienced musicians." Johann Ernst was the son of Johann Christoph, Sebastian's uncle, and twin brother of Sebastian's father

The Boulder Bach Festival was founded in 1981 to present the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and to encourage knowledge and appreciation of the Baroque master. Since 1982 a three-day festival has been presented each year, featuring an orchestra, chorus, and soloists drawn from the pool of area musicians, with a few nationally-known artists from other parts of the country. Over the years it has gradually added concerts outside of its original format so that presentations now extend through most of the year.
