Biography
English writer, who first gave the novel its modern character through the treatment of everyday life. Although Austen was widely read in her lifetime, she published her works anonymously. The most urgent preoccupation of her young, well-bred heroines is courtship, and finally marriage. Austen's best-known books include Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Emma (1816). Virginia Woolf called her "the most perfect artist among women." Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire. She was tutored at home. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. On her father's retirement, the family moved to Bath. Austen started to write for family amusement as a child. Her earliest-known writings date from about 1787. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. After the death of her father in 1805, she lived with her mother and sister in Southampton and moved in 1809 to a large cottage in the village of Chawton. Austen never married, but her social life was active. She was connected with the middling-rich landed gentry that she portrayed in her novels.

Jane Austen
Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a prominent British novelist. She stands as a model of the writer whose apparently sheltered life did nothing to reduce the stature and drama of her fiction. Her first novel (pub. posth.), Northanger Abbey, pokes fun at the Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe. Austen is most famous, however, for her later works, which took the form of socially conscious comedies of errors. These, especially Emma, are often cited for their perfection of form, while modern critics continue to unearth new perspectives on Austen's keen commentary on the predicament of young, unmarried, upper-class English women in the early 1800s. The order in which she began and completed her novels is different from that of publication. Her novels were fairly well received when they were published, with Sir Walter Scott , in particular, praising her work. Her reputation has only increased since, and she is now considered one of the greatest English novelists. [Adapted from Wikipedia

About Jane Austen ~
Biography
More pictures of Jane Austen Jane Austen was a major English novelist, whose brilliantly witty, elegantly structured satirical fiction marks the transition in English literature from 18th century neo-classicism to 19th century romanticism. Jane Austen was born on 16 December, 1775, at the rectory in the village of Steventon, near Basingstoke, in Hampshire. The seventh of eight children of the Reverend George Austen and his wife, Cassandra, she was educated mainly at home and never lived apart from her family. She had a happy childhood amongst all her brothers and the other boys who lodged with the family and whom Mr Austen tutored. From her older sister, Cassandra, she was inseparable. To amuse themselves, the children wrote and performed plays and charades, and even as a little girl Jane was encouraged to write. The reading that she did of the books in her father's extensive library provided material for the short satirical sketches she wrote as a girl.

Jane Austen
Austen never married, had no contact with the London literary circle; she, nevertheless, elevated her life, - a "little world of struggling clerical families, husband-hunting mothers and daughters, eligible clergymen and landowners, country fools and snobs" - into an enduring microcosm of the great world through her writings, distinguished by her "satirical wit and brilliant comedy, complex and subtle view of human nature, exquisite moral discrimination, and unobtrusive perfection of style ( Benet's Austen was a traditionalist who thought that natural or absolute morality come before the needs, real or supposed, of society. "If I were in doubt as to the wisdom of my actions I should not consult Flaubert or Dostoevsky . The opinion of Balzac of Dickens would carry little weight with me: were Stendhal to rebuke me, it would only convince me I had done right: even in the judgment of Tolstoy I should not put complete confidence. But I should worry for weeks and weeks, if I incurred the disapproval of Jane Austen." ( Cecil Austen's completed novels, were (with their publication dates):
