24. Fred Astaire 1899-1987
Information about the career of the actor and dancer.

Top Billing
Virtually all the polls at the end of the 20th century placed Fred Astaire at the top or near the top of professional dancers. Astaire made some 30 memorable movie musicals, including 10 highly-acclaimed films with co-star Ginger Rogers. The Astaire-Rogers collaboration included "The Gay Divorce," "Roberta," "Top Hat," "Follow the Fleet," "Swing Time," "Shall We Dance?," "Carefree," "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" and "The Barkleys of Broadway." Astaire's success in the movies seemed as improbable as Bing Crosby's. He had a face the shape of a bartlett pear, a beanpole figure and a weak voice. In his first attempt at a movie career a Paramount executive wrote that Astaire "Can't act. Can't sing. Balding. Can dance a little." Astaire succeeded nonetheless. He sweated his way to the top. "He was a dictator who made me work harder and longer than anyone," said Nanette Fabray, one of his female costars. Astaire introduced 36 hit songs in his movies from 1929 through 1951. According to Joel Whitburn, author of Pop Memories , eight Astaire recordings topped the pop charts: "Night and Day," "Cheek to Cheek," "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket," "The Way You Look Tonight," "A Fine Romance," "They Can't Take that Away from Me," "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "Change Partners."

Biography Filmography Awards Articles ... FUNNY FACE A lot of adjectives come to mind when one mentions Fred Astaire: debonair, poised, elegant, captivating. And nouns too, especially grace, sophistication and talent. He wasn't particularly handsome, nor did he have a singing voice comparable to so many of the romantic crooners of his day. But Astaire didn't need those standbys he could dance like no one else. His films with Ginger Rogers transformed the movie musical forever, and in them he proved that he wasn't just a dancer he was a talented light comedian too. Astaire also had a way of singing songs as if he were carrying on a conversation making every word of every lyric matter. Composers like Gershwin, Berlin and Porter were inspired to write their best for him, because they knew his delivery would bring their tunes to life. Often imitated, but ne'er to be duplicated, Fred Astaire was one of a kind.

Fred Astaire
Biography Filmography Awards Articles ... FUNNY FACE Biography: Though on screen Fred was most often associated with a top hat, white tie and tails, in real life he detested formal dress and looked on his signature costume as work clothes. FREDERICK AUSTERLITZ was born on May 10, 1899 in Omaha, Nebraska to Frederic E. Austerlitz, an Austrian immigrant and traveling salesman, and his wife Ann Geilus Austerlitz. His sister Adele, older by eighteen months, showed a talent for dancing at an early age, and although only four years old, young Fred accompanied his sister to ballet school. In 1904, Mrs. Austerlitz moved with the children to New York where they were enrolled in a performing arts school run by Ned Wayburn, one of the pioneers of modern tap dancing. The following year Fred and Adele made their vaudeville debut on a stage in New Jersey as a miniature bride and groom, and began touring on the Orpheum circuit in an act called "Juvenile Artists Presenting an Electric Musical Toe-Dancing Novelty." Though Fred sporadically attended public school in New Jersey, most of his schooling came on the road under his mother's tutelage. With the advent of World War I, the Austerlitz's anglicized their name to "Astaire" and the teenage brother-sister hoofers began to make the new name famous. In 1917 the pair made their Broadway debut in a musical revue called "Over the Top," and although the show itself didn't fare well, the Astaires received very positive notices. Though they seldom had any lines, Fred and Adele danced their way through a number of musical revues until in 1922 they were cast in "For Goodness' Sake" with songs by George and Ira Gershwin. Although they had sixth billing, they stole the show.

A Tribute to Fred Astaire
(This article was written in May, 1999, in celebration of the Astaire Centennial. It was updated in honor of his 101st birthday.) Many say he was the greatest dancer in movie history. Some even say he was one of the greatest jazz singers. His acting ability improved with age; in fact, his first and only Oscar nomination came in 1975, for Best Supporting Actor in The Towering Inferno , when he was 76 years old. On the other hand, there was the studio drone whose opinion reportedly was, "Can't act. Slightly bald. Also dances." Balding or not, there has never been anybody else quite like Fred Astaire. He made 51 theatrical films and TV movies, and not one of them could be called "bad." Even The Over-the-Hill-Gang Rides Again (1970) and The Amazing Dobermans (1976) were enlivened by his presence.

Hardy's supper club "Holiday Inn" sets the scene for the love triangle that unfolds and allows for a few songs-and-dance routines at the same time. Music is definitely the key here, as the plot is distinctly thin, and the pairing of Crosby and Astaire, does not work as well as it could have. Crosby sings his way through "White Christmas" for the first time here, while Astaire tries to make do with a dancing partner - Marjorie Reynolds - who cannot replace Ginger Rogers. There are some high points, such as Astaire's firecracker dance routine, and in its original black and white form it is in many ways, still preferable to the brash Technicolor of "
