Thanks to his fairy tales and stories, Hans Christian Andersen, 1805-75, is probably the most widely read author in the world today, but even in his own time he was read and known from Russia in the east to America in the west. His career from the lowest stratum of society in his native town of Odense in Funen via his problematic adaptation to the official and bourgeois circles in Copenhagen and further still until he became a familiar guest in the country mansions of Denmark, the palaces of kings and princes and the entire cultural stage of Europe provided him with material for many of his works and for no fewer than three autobiographies, the final version being Mit Livs Eventyr (1855, The Fairy Tale of My Life (with later supplements)). Modern editions of his correspondence and diaries have produced an unusually comprehensive insight into his life and his complex personality.
Andersen's fairy tales and stories (about 190 in all, written 1835-72) are addressed to both adults and children and are stylistically and thematically deeply original. In addition he wrote novels, travel accounts (he spent a large part of his life travelling abroad), poems and works for the theatre (including libretti for operas and ballad operas).

Search all of Hans Christian Andersen Danish writer who combined folk legends, moral teachings and humor with his own great imagination and produced fairy tales, which were not meant merely for children but for adults as well. Andersen used frequently colloquial style that disguises the sophistication of his tales. Before achieving success as a playwright and novelist, Andersen was trained as singer and actor. Many of Andersen's fairy tales depict characters who gain happiness in life after suffering and conflicts. 'The Ugly Duckling' is Andersen's most confessional work.
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense. His father was a shoemaker and literate. His mother, who worked as washerwoman, was uneducated and superstitious, but opened for his son the world of folklore. Andersen's half-sister worked as a prostitute for a time. Andersen received little education, and as a child he was highly emotional, suffering all kinds of fears and humiliations because of his tallness and effeminate interests. Andersen's hysterical attacks of cramps were falsely diagnosed as epileptic fits. Encouraged by his mother he composed his own fairy tales and arrange puppet theatre shows.
In 1816 his father died and Andersen was forced to go to work. He was for a short time apprenticed to a weaver and tailor, and he also worked at a tobacco factory. Once his trousers were pulled down when other workers suspected that he was a girl. At the age of 14 Andersen moved to Copenhagen to start a career as a singer, dancer or an actor - he had a beautiful soprano voice. The following three years were full of hardships although he found supporters who paved his way to the theatre. Andersen succeeded in becoming associated with the Royal Theater, but he had to leave it when his voice began to change. When he was casually referred as a poet it changed his plans: "It went through me, body and soul, and tears filled my eyes. I knew that, from this very moment, my mind was awake to writing and poetry." He then began to write plays, all of which were rejected.

Dear Hans Christian Andersen ...
You were there, in my childhood back in Denmark. And you were here, when I arrived in New York in 1940. And wherever you are now, I fancy you are up there in some heavenly Elysium, with Mozart and your friend Mendels sohn playing Bach and you maybe telling your stories in the unique, sublime literery fashion in which you wrote them. Wherever you are, know that we refer to you with reverence and pride, as your pen has engraved your name in the stars forever.
Affectionately

Reared in poverty, he left Odense at 14 for Copenhagen. He failed as an actor, but his poetry won him generous patrons including King Frederick VI. In 1829 his fantasy A Journey on Foot from the Holmen Canal to the Eastern Point of Amager was published, followed by a volume of poetry in 1830. Granted a traveling pension by the king, Andersen wrote sketches of the European countries he visited. His first novel, Improvisatoren (1835), was well received by the critics. His sentimental novels were for a time considered his forte. However, with his first book of fairy tales, Eventyr See his Fairy Tales

Hans Christian Andersen
Writer Denmark Born 2 Apr 1805
Died 4 Aug 1875
Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker and a washerwoman. As a young teenager, he became quite well known in Odense as a reciter of drama, and as a singer. When he was 14, he set off for the capital, Copenhagen, determined to become a national success on the stage. He failed miserably, but made some influential friends in the capital, who got him into school to remedy his lack of proper education. He hated school: aged 17, he was in a class of 12-year-olds and was constantly mocked by them and by the teachers.
In 1829 his first book - an account of a walking trip - was published. After that, books came out at regular intervals. At first, he considered his adult books more important than his fantasies. In later life, however, he began to see that these apparently trivial stories could vividly portray constant features of human life and character, in a charming manner. There were two consequences of this. First, he stopped regarding his stories as trifles written solely for children; second, he began to write more original stories, rather than retelling traditional tales.
He once said that ideas for stories 'lie in my mind like seeds and only need the kiss of a sunbeam or a drop of malice to flower'. He would often thinly disguise people he liked or disliked as characters in his stories: a woman who failed to return his love becomes the foolish prince in 'The Little Mermaid'; his own ugliness and humiliation, or his father's daydream of being descended from a rich and powerful family, are reflected in 'The Ugly Duckling'.
