Jan Akkerman - Pacific Road, Birkenhead, Monday 15 November A capacity audience at Pacific Road were presented with an excellent jazz-fuelled set from the Jan Akkerman band. Each set started with Jan playing a solo spot, heavily influenced by Django Reinhardt, Jan stated that Django was "where it all began" for him as a player. Jan and the band travelled through the language of be-bop and hard-bop, sounding at times like the great Wes Montgomery - Jimmy Smith bands of the mid-sixties. This wasn't 'smooth jazz' but tough, raw-edged fusion with the band kicking hard behind Jan's brittle improvisations. Highlights included a fast, acid-drenched interpretation of 'Autumn Leaves' and a clever medley of Miles Davis' 'Jean Pierre' with Ian Dury's 'Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll'. Jan's jazz pedigree includes recordings with Kenny Wheeler and Tony Scott and gigs with Candy Dulfer - he has found an ideal band to support this current musical avenue. Jan should be welcome at all the European jazz festivals where his exciting and unpretentious style could create real magic - No Hocus Pocus.

Zoals zo vaak bij grote kunstenaars kreeg deze geheel akoestische CD te weinig aandacht. Jan Akkerman speelt voor koningen. Het volk luistert nou eenmaal liever naar de 'unplugged' versies van bekende nummers van The Golden Earring of Clapton. Gitarist aan het hof Jan Akkerman over componeren, zijn laatste album Passion, zijn inspiratie en de muziekscene. De luit, als symbool van de roots van de westerse muziek, loopt daar als een rode draad doorheen. 'Op zeven van de tien schilderijen in het Rijksmuseum staan ze met zo’n ding, dat zijn mijn roots, ik kom niet uit de Mississipi Delta.' Je hebt je luit 'herontdekt'. Hoe is dat gegaan? Ik kon er nooit goede snaren voor vinden. Dat heeft dertig jaar geduurd. Nu heb ik eindelijk een luitbouwer gevonden die er snaren op kan zetten. Je kan er zelf wel aan gaan rotzooien, dat heb ik trouwens vaak genoeg gedaan, maar dan ineens ging het kammetje eraf of ging die hals weer als een hoepel staan, dat vond ik ook een beetje zonde. Ik vind een luit authentieker klinken. Met een gitaar zit je aan de gitaarstemming vast. Een luit heeft veel verschillende stemmingen. Dat vind ik het mooie ervan, je moet toch iedere keer je vingertjes weer anders neerzetten. Ik wil weer aan Bachsuites beginnen op luit. Kunnen we nu ook luitcomposities op je nieuwe album verwachten?

JAN AKKERMAN BIOGRAPHY Jan Akkerman was born on Christmas Eve, 1946 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. A stunning guitarist, Akkerman is at home in a multitude of diverse styles rock, progressive, jazz, soul, latin, medievel and classical. He spent the first half of his career in a number of rock and progressive bands such as The Hunters Brainbox , and the ground breaking Focus . A master of arrangement and improvisation, he was named Best Guitarist in Melody Maker 's 1973 music poll. In March 1976 Akkerman left his Focus bandmates, essentially dissolving the group, to pursue a solo career. His solo work is highlighted primarily by live sets from such prestigious sessions as the Montreaux Jazz Festival and with such musicians as percussionist Neppy Noya, Carmine Appice, Tony Scott and fellow Dutchman, keyboardist Jasper van'T Hoff. Through the 1980's Akkerman's work rarely saw release beyond the European market, and often was confined to the Dutch market only. Then, after I.R.S.'s Miles Copeland III organized the Night Of The Guitar tour in 1989, Akkerman recorded the critically well-received

The book includes a foreword by legendary broadcaster Bob Harris who, as genial compere of The Old Grey Whistle Test , witnessed at first hand the phenomenal progress of Focus after their initial appearances on that programme in 1972. Early in 2003 Classic Rock Productions release two Focus-related DVDs. One is a live concert in America, filmed in October last year, the other features classic Dutch TV footage from 1971 and other interviews. 'Focus 8' gets a general CD release in January 2003 and a UK tour is being planned for the new Focus to promote it.

The July '99 edition of Classical Guitar features an interview with Jan. The Dutch guitarist is also in the process of lining up an autumn theatre tour in Holland. Older Bizarreness The legendary Dutch guitar virtuoso has been busy as ever with the release of three rare albums from the '80's on CD. Pleasure Point From The Basement and Heartware have been reissued on the UK label HUX; all include several bonus cuts. Jan will appear at the 10th International Guitar Festival in Great Britain in November 1998. He will also be performing live on the BBC that month as well. Jan is currently endorsing a new guitar called Catalyst which looks and sounds like a guitar but has several unique qualities, such as superb sustaining abilities. Jan Akkerman is also finishing his first all-acoustic album and multimedia CD which will be an exclusive internet release. The Dutch guitar master has been busy as usual playing various gigs throughout Europe. He has recently finished an album with early Hendrix collaborator Curtis Knight.
