In the Horizon of the Infinite. We have left the land and have gone
aboard ship! We have broken down the bridge behind us - nay, more, the
land behind us! Well, little ship! look out! Beside thee is the ocean;
it is true it does not always roar, and sometimes it spreads out like
silk and gold and a gentle reverie. But times will come when thou wilt
feel that it is infinite, and that there is nothing more frightful than
infinity.
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900)
...there are continents and seas in the moral world to which every man
is an isthmus or an inlet, yet unexplored by him, but that it is easier
to sail many thousand miles through cold and storm and cannibals, in a government ship, with five hundred men and boys to assist one, than it is to explore the private sea, the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean of ones being alone. It is not worth the while to go round the world to count the cats in Zanzibar. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) Walden [1854], Conclusion

60. Sunshine Sketches: R.I.P. Fifty Years After The Death Of Stephen Leacock, We Ask

Sunshine Sketches: R.I.P.
Fifty Years After The Death Of Stephen Leacock, We Ask If Teenagers Find His Famous Prose Amusing. The Answer Is No.
Jim Slotek
Can you file misleading advertising charges against editors? For this first issue of the Sunday Magazine, they asked me to write something about humor, and I bit.
What's the next thing I hear?
"One angle we were thinking of is that March 28 is the 50th anniversary of the death of Stephen Leacock ..."
Whoomp! (There it was, the sound of my crest falling).
It's been 20 years since I studied Sunshine Sketches Of A Little Town under duress. And I may have the whole town of Orillia showing up at my doorstep with torches for saying this, but I never found Canada's Greatest Humorist funny - at least not in the sense that I remember laughing.
You say he's a national treasure, and I believe you. But if Canadians no longer burst out laughing at the folksy ways of the good Orangemen of Mariposa, it's because Stephen Leacock was 'killed' by those five lethal words: You Had To Be There.
Comedy is our highest form of expression (Andrew Dice Clay notwithstanding). It's also a living, breathing thing which can't be preserved over centuries (George Burns notwithstanding). Ideally, you'd have to freeze the people who originally laughed at the jokes and thaw them out to get an authentic chortle - such is the delicate balance of sensibilities, references, lifestyle and almost-molecular-level chemistry that goes into a drink-out-yer-nose laff.
