The Writing of a Historical Essay or Research Paper Whether you are writing an in-class essay exam or a 20-page research paper, there are some basic guidelines which you should keep in mind. The first part of this handout gives general information which is relevant to the writing of any historical essay. The second part gives tips which you should utilize in writing take-home essays, exams, and research papers. Writing an Essay An essay is not simply a list of facts. You must organize the facts into themes which support a central argument or thesis. This thesis should be introduced in the beginning of the paper and developed throughout the paper one step at a time. The stronger your thesis, the easier it will be for you to develop a strong argument. Use an outline to organize your thoughts in a clear, coherent and logical manner and to guide you in writing the essay. Organizationally, the essay has three main parts: Introduction . Use the introduction to state your thesis, outline the main points you will make in the essay, and describe the conclusions which you will draw in the essay. History essays are not mystery papers; the reader should know from the beginning what your conclusions are. Use the introduction to draw the reader into the essay. Often it is easier to write your introduction last , after you clearly know what arguments you develop in the essay.

There is no hard-and-fast rule about the order in which these sections should appear, with the exception of the Introduction, which appears at the beginning, and the Conclusion, which appears at the end. In addition, there is no rule as to how long each part should be and the relative length of the various sections. These decisions will be governed by your topic and the historical approach of your essay. The Structure and Content of a Paper (1) question and thesis Ultimately, you should be able to identify a single question (there will invariably be many questions subsumed under that question) that defines the general purpose of the work and serves as an organizing principle. (The question need not be expressed literally as an interrogative, a sentence ending in a question mark. Stylistically, it is much more effective to introduce the question in a more subtle and elegantyet very clearfashion.) The answer to that question is the paper's thesis. A thesis is not a statement of purpose; it is a statement of conclusion. You should be able to articulate your thesis in one or two sentences. Typically, both the major question and the thesis are expressed in the introduction of the paper. The bulk of the paper then develops the argument to prove the thesis. (2) argument (a) structure and logic Ideally, a paper is like a Mozart symphony. Everything fits together perfectly, and the removal of a single note, or a single sentence, would destroy the whole. In a paper, the overall objectives must be clear, the design coherent, and the individual themes linked to each other and to the whole. Paragraphs must form coherent units, linked to other paragraphs and to the big picture by well-defined topic sentences and by transitional clauses and sentences. Above all, the logic of your argument, from your largest point to the smallest detail, must be expressed with clarity and precision.

The Othmer Library is a product of the vision and generosity of Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer, and it has a unique emphasis: the history of chemical achievement. Donald F. Othmer (1904-1995) was one of the nation's preeminent chemical engineers, holder of more than 150 patents and author of some 350 scholarly articles. Book Editing for the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke: NINDS at 50 by Dr. Lewis P. Rowland As part of its fiftieth anniversary celebration, NINDS hoped to distribute a history of its accomplishments and the advances made over five decades of brain research. The date was set, the distinguished speakers invited, but the book was not yet finished. At that point NINDS asked HAI to ensure that the volume, the story of the leading scientists of NINDS and their discoveries, would be historically accurate, eminently readable, and completed by the time of the event. NINDS turned to HAI because of its reputation of expertise in historical research, writing, and project coordination. First came an assessment of the existing manuscript in which HAI identified what the manuscript lacked. Book editing can be a delicate give-and-take between author and editor, but historian Nancy Berlage, observed the client, "tackled the project with a low key but persistent approach," understood the history, "stated her reasons for edits, backed them up with facts and usually prevailed." HAI then helped reorganize the material and helped research and write new sections, shaping the raw materials into a polished manuscript that charted the institute's administrative, scientific, and program development. HAI also coordinated the acquisition of photo illustrations, checked for factual accuracy, and provided indexing services.
