The reading age covered will be roughly 4 to 13 and will include picture books, easy-readers and novels which will be studied in turn. Techniques of writing will be examined and exercises set in class to help students develop their understanding of character, place, conflict, dialogue, viewpoint etc. as applied to writing for children. Students will read and give short talks on children's books of their choice in order to develop an awareness of children's literature and share it with the class. An important aspect of the course will be students' own writing. Students will be encouraged to read their work in a supportive (but not uncritical) atmosphere. Yhdistyksen vanhin palkinto on 1946 perustettu Topelius-palkinto, joka jaetaan vuosittain parhaasta nuorisoromaanista. Perustajajäsen Arvid Lydeckenin nimeä kantava palkinto jaetaan vuosittain parhaasta lastenkirjasta. Samassa yhteydessä luovutetaan myös kunniakirja korkeatasoisen nuorisokirjan kääntämisestä/kustantamisesta sekä Lasten Oman Kirjakerhon tukema Suomalainen kuvakirjapalkinto kotimaiselle kuvakirjalle.
