Lynn Kimberlin Four teachers were responsible for obtaining an AT&T mini grant for Pope High School, Cobb County, Marietta, Georgia. The grant will help with the completion of an interactive, across the curriculum class project. The project is designed to show how technology and knowledge can transfer from one subject area to another. Using the Internet, the one-computer classroom and grades 9-11, students are researching relevant information for math, science and geography; learning how to "reach out and touch someone" from other cultures; and creating an online magazine that demonstrates English skills and showcases their findings. Life skills-such as researching the Internet, communicating and working cooperatively with others-are being taught and enhanced through the gathering of data and completing the magazine online as the culminating activity. One of the goals in education today is making material relevant 'across the curriculum,' so we wanted a project that would incorporate the core classes with the Internet and would create a finished technology project using data from all of the different classes.

WEB WRITING
Web writing is a highly specialized skill where Biz-Zone is best in class. In late 1997 the concept of creating a robust, online publication for Canadian small business owners was born. At the time the dominant Canadian "dot.coms" had not been launched. Major magazines and newspapers were providing little on their websites - largely tables of contents. Meanwhile, south of the border the online media market was exploding. The need for Canadian-specific content, and that the Canadian online market was about to emerge, was clear. Completely self-financed, we tackled the development of the online magazine as we do with all of our projects: With great vigour, enthusiasm, and attention to detail. As a result, less than three months later, CanadaOne.com was launched. A pilot launch took place on Feb. 16th, followed by an official launch on March 2nd, 1998. Since our official launch we have published a monthly online magazine every month - over 47 issues to date. And our publication has boomed, a success story amid tales of dot.com woes. We have written copy for many websites. But the true depth of our expertise in web writing comes from our experiences creating an online publication as rich and detailed as CanadaOne. Today CanadaOne has over 700 articles for entrepreneurs, and the site is visited by about 30,000 unique visitors each month. We regularly get feedback from visitors who rave about the value of the content provided on CanadaOne.

'Sakuteki' by Arve Henriksen (Rune Grammofon, RCD 2021)
By Ian Simmons
When you think of trumpets, you think of bombast, drums, triumphal blasts. Subtlety does not enter into it, so a CD such as this comes as something of a revelation. Arve Henriksen's trumpet playing has already made its mark in a variety of contexts in his native Norway, and here it comes to the fore on an album named after and inspired by an 11th century Japanese treatise on garden planning. This work emphasises the principle of placing things "where they are called for" and Henriksen has taken this to heart in creating the music, describing it as "a reaction to the electronic mindless laptop music currently being circulated as 'great art'". Marble Index - and church organs. The sites were chosen for their reverb and acoustic response, such as the Sofienberg, a church in Oslo, chosen for the deep bass sound of its organ, and the Emanuel Vigeland Museum, which has an extraordinary 15-second reverb. Recorded live with just two microphones and no post-production processing, this music truly has a sense of place. Sakuteki is a delightful work, true to its inspirations and fascinating in its minimal aesthetic, which none the less produces extraordinarily rich and satisfying results. A testament to the fact that challenging and magical music can still be produced without technological intervention - this could have been adequately recorded any time over the last 50 years - and a ringing endorsement of Henriksen's concentration on exact form and technique.

Should you keep the same design and layout for all your entry pages or should you customize each one for the mood of the day? Should you put all your entries for the week on one page or have a separate page for each day? How you decide to do it is ultimately up to you, of course but let me give you some things to think about. If you keep all the entry pages of your site the same then your readers will alway know what to expect and where on the pages to look for different things you have there. On the other hand if you change each day for the mood or subject of the entry then you will have more colorful pages and readers will be able to better identify with what you are writing. As for how to post your entries (daily, weekly, monthly) here are some thinking points. If you put all your entries for the week or month on one page then your readers won't have far to go when reading your journal. They will be able to just scroll down the page and read about your whole life for that time period. On the other hand, if you create a different page for each day then you will be able to change the design for each day, if you wish, and you will be able to give each entry it's own personal title. If you do it this way it also makes it easier to find specific entries when your readers are trying to find something they liked.

Write Right: Polishing Your E-Learning Prose
By Laura Francis
You've developed your first e-learning course. The content is brilliant and the design gorgeous. But what about the text? Here's how to make sure your writing is clear, concise, and correct. Your learners will thank you for it. Picture this: A worker sits at his desk, staring at his computer. He's trying to complete an e-learning course his boss assigned. It's now Monday; it's due by Thursday and he's no closer to finishing than he is to writing the novel he's dreamed of for years. Why? Because the course is poorly written, with incomplete explanations and confusing instructions. As he stares blindly at his computer, the man wonders when someone will produce an e-learning course that's easy to use. Too often, e-learning course writers fail to keep learners in mind, assuming they'll have a trainer available to answer questions. But that's not always the case. E-learning participants working on their own don't want to spend valuable time deciphering poor writing when they should be learning. To ensure that your writing helps instead of hinders e-learners, keep several guidelines in mind. Remember the audience.

About the Program
( For more information about the program, please consult the "Eyes to the Future" public website ; the information on this page is excerpted from that site. ) What's It All About? "Eyes to the Future," based at TERC, Inc., in Cambridge, MA, intervenes with middle-school girls of all abilities before they have chosen or ruled out possible futures for themselves. This multi-age mentoring program uses the Web to link middle-school girls with high-school girls in their school districts who have stayed interested in science and technology and with women who use science and technology in their careers. We aim to provide urban middle-school girls with role models who have pursued science and technology in high school and beyond. "Eyes to the Future" gives girls broader knowledge of possible futures in high school and science- and technology-related careers as well as personal relationships with female role models who can lend emotional and academic support. Mentoring and Electronic Communication With teachers at participating schools, we place participants into "teams" of three middle-school girls, one high-school girl from the same district, and one adult mentor each. The middle-school girls meet weekly in an after-school club where they use the project website to communicate with their high-school and adult mentors. Each team of three middle-school girls, one high-school girl, and one adult has its own private discussion area on the website; middle-school girls, high-school mentors, adult mentors, and teachers have their own separate discussion areas, as well. When a participant logs into the site, the website notifies her if she has new mail and tells her which of her messages are unread. The website also supports collaborative writing and the sharing of information about science projects.

Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design
By James McNally
In 2000, O'Reilly published Eric Meyer's, Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide . Despite the fact that it was a reference book, Meyer's conversational writing style and sense of humor made it a joy to read. It quickly established Meyer as the "go-to guy" for CSS, which Jeffrey Zeldman makes hilariously clear in his foreword to Meyer's latest book, Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design : "My name is Jeffrey, and I'm an Eric Meyer addict." Where the O'Reilly book was a dictionary, here, Meyer has written a collection of short stories. Each story (chapter) is a project that any of us might face, and Meyer shows us how easy and rewarding it is to replace our old HTML workarounds with the elegance of Cascading Style Sheets. I won't try to make the case for CSS here. If you're reading this at all, you're someone who's at least interested in making your web pages easier to change, and more standards-compliant to boot. And this book is not for someone who's not comfortable getting his hands dirty, so to speak. It's aimed at someone who has at least a familiarity with the conventions of CSS and is looking for practical applications. Each project is small enough to be completed in a few hours or less, and to give the reader a real sense of mastery. Meyer also shows a few different approaches to the same problems, showing the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Here's the breakdown of chapters:

Pedagogy and Policy in the Age of the Wired Professor
By Angela Benson and Elizabeth Wright
    November 1999 - Feature
Can online reading, writing and research enrich the classroom experience and improve the level of interaction between students and instructors, as well as among students? With this goal in mind, the authors initiated a collaboration designed to create and deliver a distance learning module that would help students improve their skills in writing and reading Spanish. Online activities and assignments supplemented textbook readings, class discussions and activities in twice weekly course meetings. Specifically, a WebCT (Worldwide Web Course Tools) module incorporated articles from the Internet, writing assignments, and research projects. At the course midpoint, the authors asked the students to report on their learning progress. The results highlight an array of benefits - some anticipated, others unexpected - and a host of challenges that face universities and educational institutions as they harness the Internet revolution for teaching purposes. Sixty percent of the course participants reported that, as we expected, they improved their writing through this process. A significant minority of just over twenty percent, however, reported problems with access to computers and the Internet that hindered their completion of the assignments. In particular, the results identified a technology gap, where students without their own computers and the latest versions of Web browsers finished assignments with greater difficulty.

Writing for the Web and Creating Effective Online Content
An interview with online writing expert, Amy Gahran
Please briefly describe your CONTENTIOUS Web-zine.
    CONTENTIOUS
is a monthly Web-zine for writers, editors, and others who create content for online media. Unlike many other resources for the Web creation community, it does not focus on design, programming, e-commerce, online advertising, etc. It's about what people (or organizations) have to say on the Web, and how to make Web content effective. It's mainly about text content, but it also addresses other content types (images, sound, interactive databases, etc.)
How can good writing, and good content, augment the usability of a Web site? There are several levels to this. On the most basic level, a well-conceived, well-written, and well-edited document is simply easier to read. The words carry you along, they don't confound or confuse you. That has been true of writing since writing itself began, it's not new to the online world. Text is the basic building block of the Web. Text plays a key role not only in terms of a site's content, but also in reader orientation and internal or external navigation systems. In this regard, the role of text is somewhat different in the online world than it has been in the print world.
