Wrestling Basics Uniform The Mat Technique
The Basics

Considered by many to be the world's oldest competitive sport, wrestling was part of the ancient Olympic Games when they began in 776 B.C. There are two different styles of wrestling.
  • Freestyle: The wrestler is permitted to use his legs for takedowns and holds.
  • Greco-Roman: The wrestler is not permitted to attack his opponent's legs or use his own legs to execute moves.
The match length is the same for both styles, two three-minute periods separated by one 30-second rest period.
Ways to win
  • Pin (fall): The wrestler must hold his opponent's shoulder blades to the mat for about one-half second. Decision: If there is no pin after six minutes, the wrestler with more points wins. If points are equal, or if neither wrestler has at least three points, the match is decided by a three-minute overtime period. Technical fall: Wrestler wins if he is ahead by 10 points at any point during the match.

The Olympics: What Have They Become?
The Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Fortius", translates to "Faster, Higher, Stronger." But in recent years, the Olympics have changed greatly, and perhaps this motto no longer characterizes the present games. unpaid amateur . Today, there are a lot more sports, or perhaps I should say there are a lot more games. I use the word "games" since some modern Olympic events require very little athletic ability. In addition to shooting, which was also in the 1896 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has included the games of table tennis, archery, and equestrian. Also on the program are such esoteric events as synchronized swimming, race walking, rhythmic gymnastics, and synchronized diving. It gets worse. Since 1999, the IOC has classified "mind games" such as bridge and chess as sports, and hence they have become candidates for inclusion into the Olympic games. In a recent meeting to determine which games to add and which to axe, the IOC denied these events as well as "air sports", billiards, boules, bowling, and ballroom dancing

Mark Johnson Position:
Head Coach
As former Olympic wrestler and NCAA All-American Mark Johnson begins his 11th season at the University of Illinois, he continues to drive Illinois ahead in national prominence. During the Johnson tenure, Illinois has finished in the Top-10 at the NCAA championships on six occasions and in the top 12 for the last eight seasons. Johnson has led the Illinois program to more wins, NCAA Champions, NCAA qualifers and All-Americans than any coach in the school’s history. The Illinois wrestling team is progressivley making school history year after year. In 2000, the team’s sixth-place finish was the best since 1958 only to be bested by the 2001 finish of fifth place which was the best since 1948. The 2001 team also took second at the Big Ten Championships, sending nine athletes to the NCAAs and placing ahead of national power Iowa for the first time in Johnson’s career. For his coaching effortsin 2001, Johnson was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. The team posted a 12-2 dual meet record and Johnson became the school’s all-time winningest coach in the school’s history. Last season, in a rebuilding year, Johnson led a reshaped starting lineup to a 12-4 record and 10th-place finish at the NCAAs. With seven new starters, the Illini still managed to qualify nine wrestlers for the NCAAs after a fifth-place finish at the Big Tens, equaling the 2001 squad’s NCAA representation. Johnson earned National Coach of the Year honors from both the National Wrestling Coaches Association and W.I.N Magazine in 1995 after posting a 13-2 dual record and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA championships. On the recruiting front, Johnson also has brought in seven classes ranked among the top 20 in the nation, including the second-ranked class in the nation in 1993. Johnson came to Urbana-Champaign from Oregon State University, where he was head coach from 1990-1992. The Rock Island, Ill., native led the Beavers to the Pac-10 championship in 1992, earning conference Coach of the Year honors.

http://www.usawct.org/news/mankamyer.html
for immediate release, September 16, 2002 USOC PRESIDENT MARTY MANKAMYER SUPPORTS KEEPING BOTH STYLES OF WRESTLING IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES Marty Mankamyer, the president of the U.S. Olympic Committee, supports the inclusion of both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling in the program of the Olympic Games. Mankamyer is responding to the recommendation of the Olympic Programme Commission, which suggested changes in the sport program to the International Olympic Committee. A number of specific events or disciplines of existing Olympic sports were recommended for elimination, including one of the two disciplines of Olympic wrestling. The Olympic Programme Commission did not specify which style might be cut. Mankamyer provided the following statement to USA Wrestling, in support of its efforts within the international wrestling community to retain both traditional Olympic wrestling styles in future Olympic Games: STATEMENT BY MARTY MANKAMYER "The U.S. Olympic Committee supports the inclusion of both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling in the program of the Olympic Games. Wrestling has been included in both the ancient and modern Olympic Games. Greco-Roman wrestling was featured in the first modern Olympics in 1896. Freestyle wrestling was added to the Olympics in 1904. Both styles of wrestling are practiced all around the world, and both have been instrumental in building the popularity of the modern Olympic Games. We support the efforts of FILA, the international wrestling federation, and USA Wrestling, the U.S. sport governing body, to retain both styles of wrestling on the Olympic program."

IOC Says All New Sports Must Include Women

By Stephen Wilson
Associated Press
Monday, February 2, 1998; 6:33 a.m. EST
If any new sports are added to future Olympics, they must include women's events, IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said today. "The Olympic movement is determined to make its contribution so that the 21st century marks the beginning of a new era for women in world sport,'' Samaranch said in opening the International Olympic Committee session on the eve of the Nagano Games. On Sunday, the IOC approved women's modern pentathlon for the 2000 Sydney Games. Women's weightlifting and women's water polo already are planned for Sydney. "The IOC has decided that any new sport wishing to be included in the Olympic program must comprise women's events,'' Samaranch said in a speech. The IOC gave provisional recognition last week to the federations representing sumo wrestling and bodybuilding. Wrestling and boxing, two male-only sports already in the summer games, are pushing to include women's events. Sydney officials said the move boosts the total proportion of female athletes to 42 percent, an increase of 5 percent over the previous record at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
