Wrestling
Of the two styles of wrestling, "Greco-Roman" and "freestyle," Greco-Roman is the classic form, the style of wrestling practiced by the ancient Greeks. Although differences in techniques are numerous, the most obvious is that Greco-Roman is confined to upper-body grappling. Freestyle, by contrast, involves the entire body, and leg attacks are permitted. Europeans tend to favor the Greco-Roman classical style, while North America's best wrestlers are attracted to the freestyle. United States collegiate wrestling, for example, is very similar to international freestyle. Today, the training and techniques of each style are so specialized that most wrestlers concentrate on one style or the other.

DALLAS, TEXAS A trio of wrestlers with Central Michigan University ties competed at the Olympic trials, held June 22-24 at Reunion Arena, and one finished fourth. Chippewa assistant coach Shawn Charles competed at the trials for the second time in his career, wrapping up with a fourth-place finish in the 138.75-pound weight class. Charles beat Troy Steiner, 4-3, in his first match on Friday to advance to the third-place bout. Eric Larkin posted a 5-4 overtime victory over Charles to take third place. CMU graduate assistant coach and former athlete Casey Cunningham appeared in the trials for the first time in the 152-pound freestyle class. Cunningham, who was the NCAA champion at 157-pounds in 1999, opened the tourney with a 6-2 victory over Kenny Ramsey. He then fell to Pat Santoro, 6-2, in the second round. Cunningham beat Adam DiSabato, 6-5, in the consolation round but bowed out of the competition with a 9-3 loss to Terry Steiner.

TITLE IX - December 3/4 Meeting in Philadelphia As you probably know, the Department of Education has assigned a commission to study Title IX and they have had four public town meetings over the past few months. Much public awareness has been raised, but nothing has been decided yet, and it is all coming to a head in Philadelphia Tuesday. OUR WRESTLING COMMUNITY NEEDS ANYONE LIVING ANYWHERE NEAR PHILADELPHIA OR ANYONE WILLING TO TRAVEL TO PHILADELPHIA TO MAKE TIME TO ATTEND THESE MEETINGS. THEY MAY BE OF GREAT HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE FOR OUR SPORT. THE NATIONAL WRESTLING COACHES ASSOCIATION (NWCA), USA WRESTLING, AND THE COLLEGE SPORTS COUNCIL IS ISSUING A CALL TO ACTION! MAKE PLANS TO COME TO PHILADELPHIA TUESDAY AND/OR WEDNESDAY OF NEXT WEEK IF
AT ALL POSSIBLE.

Iowa State Illinois Nebraska Minnesota Olympic Sports Provided With Opportunities to Comment on Title IX The Secretary of Education’s Commission on Opportunity in Athletics recently announced a schedule of six meetings (four of which will be open for public comment) designed to obtain broad public input directed at improving the application of federal standards for measuring equal opportunity to participate in athletics. This Commission will recommend to the Secretary of Education if any how the implementation of Title IX should be revised in a written report by no later than January 31, 2003. It is extremely important to the long-term survival of Olympic sports at the collegiate level that members of the Commission hear from members of these sports about the devastating effects the gender quota prong known as proportionality has had on the sport they love. It is equally important that members of the Commission know that these sports support Title IX as it was originally intended but that changes in the way in which it is implemented are long overdue.

Iowa State Illinois Nebraska Minnesota Proposed Olympic Sports Revitalization Act Languishing in Committee By Matthew J. Hlinak Senate Bill 1085, the proposed Olympic Sports Revitalization Act (OSRA), was introduced into the United States Senate on June 21, 2001 by Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN), a former wrestler at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. This bill aims to improve the performance of our Olympic athletes by stemming the tide of collegiate athletic program cancellations. The OSRA’s most significant provision allocates scholarship money to colleges and universities for student-athletes participating in certain designated sports. These sports include threatened men’s sports (wrestling, tennis, gymnastics, rifle/shooting, fencing, outdoor track, swimming, skiing, ice hockey, water polo, and archery), threatened women’s sports (gymnastics, fencing, field hockey, archery, and badminton), and emerging women’s sports (team handball, synchronized swimming, and equestrian). Schools would receive $100,000 to $200,000 in scholarship money over four years to disperse to student-athletes in eligible programs, with a maximum of three recipient teams per school. This funding would be cut off if a school cancels a recipient program.

From Fetzer To Finley: Carolina's Olympic Sports Have Done It All This Year UNC looks to clinch Carlyle Cup Sunday.
April 20, 2002 By Dave Lohse
Associate Athletic Communications Director
Chalk up the 2001-02 athletic year as another sterling one for the Olympic sports program at the University of North Carolina. As the spring sports season begins its transition from conference championship to NCAA championship phase in the next few weeks Carolina's excellence has become abundantly clear once again. On Saturday, the Tar Heels' women's outdoor track and field team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, giving UNC four league titles this school year. Three more Tar Heel teams will be in ACC championship matches on Sunday in women's lacrosse versus Maryland, men's tennis versus Georgia Tech and women's tennis versus Duke. In addition to women's outdoor track and field, Carolina has also won ACC titles this year in women's soccer, volleyball and women's swimming and diving. Carolina is bidding this year to lead or share the lead in the number of ACC titles won for the 15th successive year. The last time any school won more conference championships in a single school year than Carolina was 1986-87. Wow! With the Sears Directors' Cup standings set to be updated again this coming Thursday, the Tar Heel athletic program currently stands a solid second in this year's rankings and barring a complete collapse in the spring, which appears highly unlikely, the Tar Heels are destined for a Top Five finish with a great chance to finish as high as second.

It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

USOC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE APPROVES SIX MORE NCAA/USOC CONFERENCE GRANTS FOR SIX OLYMPIC SPORTS Posted On:
September 08, 1998 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The United States Olympic Committee's Executive Committee, in conjunction with the NCAA Conference Grants Committee, has approved six first-time or supplemental grants to aid NCAA conferences and associations with funding for Olympic sports. The grants are part of the USOC's $8 million, four-year pilot program which was begun last year. The total amount awarded from this year's grant totals more than $1.15 million and will aid five conferences or associations nationwide. The different entities receiving first-time or supplemental grants include the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the Eastern Wrestling League, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the National Women's Collegiate Hockey Association, Of these five conferences, the first three (ECAC, EWL, MIAC) were among the initial recipients last June, when 13 grants involving 11 Olympic sports were awarded, totaling more than $5 million, and they had requested additional funding from the supplemental pool. This year's grants range from $45,000, for adding a women's hockey program at Bethel (Minn.) College to the MIAC, to $400,000 for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation to enhance the men's gymnastics programs in that group.

Olympic leaders testify Title IX hinders some sports
    Associated Press
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Leaders of Olympic programs testified Tuesday before a special commission of the U.S. secretary of Education that a federal law requiring gender equity in school sports has hindered some men's athletic programs. They said the programs suffer because the law, Title IX, forces colleges to cut some men's sports, such as gymnastics and wrestling, to make room in the budget for female athletic programs to meet quotas. "I say it is unfair to eliminate one program that favors one gender to help one favoring another,'' said Marty Mankamyer, president of the United States Olympic Committee. Mankamyer and other sports experts testified before Education Secretary Rod Paige's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics at a public hearing, the third of four held across the nation. The two-day hearing opened Tuesday at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. The 15-member commission, formed in June, is headed by Cynthia Cooper, former WNBA All-Star and ex-coach of the Phoenix Mercury, along with Stanford athletics director Ted Leland.

Cowboys coach Smith says his team is the favorite
    Associated Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo. Oklahoma State is the team to beat at the NCAA wrestling championships, and coach John Smith isn't shy about it. "We've earned that favorite tag,'' he said Wednesday during a news conference featuring the coaches of the five highest-ranked teams at the meet, which begins Thursday. "At the beginning of the year we weren't favorites. Everyone was asking if we could catch Minnesota,'' Smith said, referring to the two-time defending champion. "But since midseason, we've stepped up and decided that we're going to be a team that could win a national championship.'' Nobody has been able to bring down the Cowboys this season. The team, which has an NCAA-best 30 national titles, is 17-0 in dual meets and is coming off a Big 12 Conference tournament victory in which nine wrestlers made the finals and six won championships.
