Taxes
  • FEDERAL:
Income Tax - Paid through individual returns if the business is a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or Subchapter "S" corporation. Regular "C" corporations pay income taxes as a business entity at corporate rates. Employee Taxes - Employers must withhold federal income tax and social security (FICA) tax from employees' wages, in accordance with the amount shown on employees' W-4 forms. Employer Taxes - Business owners and corporations must also pay the employer portion of the social security (FICA) tax, and the federal unemployment tax.
Withholding and social security taxes are paid on a quarterly basis, or more often for larger-payroll firms. The unemployment tax (FUTA) is paid annually or quarterly, also depending on a firm's size. All businesses, except for sole proprietorships with no employees, must obtain a Federal identification number using form SS-4. One-person firms may simply use the individual's social security number. The Internal Revenue Service phone numbers and web site listed below can provide businesses with several useful publications to clarify the often-confusing matter of federal taxes. For example, the IRS will send "Your Business Tax Kit," which can include Publication 334:

History of the Income Tax in the United States
The nation had few taxes in its early history. From 1791 to 1802, the United States government was supported by internal taxes on distilled spirits, carriages, refined sugar, tobacco and snuff, property sold at auction, corporate bonds, and slaves. The high cost of the War of 1812 brought about the nation's first sales taxes on gold, silverware, jewelry, and watches. In 1817, however, Congress did away with all internal taxes, relying on tariffs on imported goods to provide sufficient funds for running the government. The Act of 1862 established the office of Commissioner of Internal Revenue. The Commissioner was given the power to assess, levy, and collect taxes, and the right to enforce the tax laws through seizure of property and income and through prosecution. His powers and authority remain very much the same today. In 1868, Congress again focused its taxation efforts on tobacco and distilled spirits and eliminated the income tax in 1872. It had a short-lived revival in 1894 and 1895. In the latter year, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the income tax was unconstitutional because it was not apportioned among the states in conformity with the Constitution.

8 tips for selling around the world
Small Tech / Monte Enbysk
Ah, the feeling is exhilarating, isn't it? You get your e-commerce site up and running, and the first batch of orders includes one from China.
Calm down. You may not know what you are getting into. Selling products overseas through the Web is a whole different ballgame than selling in the United States, particularly if your products weigh more than a few pounds and compete with those made in overseas markets. 'Post Office does great for me' But I don't want to sound discouraging. There are many products that ship easily and are suited to overseas sales. For example, Diane Lewis' Howell, Mich., small business, Sisters and Daughters , sells supplies for making cloth dolls, and about 20% of its sales are international. Lewis has few problems using the U.S. Postal Service to ship small packages to China, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe and other parts of the world. "Through the Post Office Web site, I can ship a lot of stuff for $9 [per package], anywhere in the world," she says. "The Post Office really does a great job for me."

Table of Contents Business Tools HR Tools Ask Alice! ... Financial Planning Toolkit Controlling Your Taxes One of the biggest hurdles you'll face in running your own business is to stay on top of your numerous obligations to federal, state, and local tax agencies. A tax headache is only one mistake away, be it a missed payment or filing deadline, an improperly claimed deduction, or incomplete records. And, you can safely assume that a tax auditor presenting an assessment of additional taxes, penalties, and interest will not look kindly on an "I didn't know I was required to do that" claim. The old legal saying that "ignorance of the law is no excuse" is perhaps most often applied in tax settings. Although retaining a good accountant or other tax professional may prove to be invaluable in avoiding tax troubles, possessing a working knowledge of how the tax systems work is also beneficial. After all, even if you delegate your tax obligations to someone else, you'll still bear the ultimate responsibility for seeing that those obligations are met.

Presidential Directive on Electronic Commerce
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary July 1, 1997 For Immediate Release MEMORANDUM FOR THE HEADS OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES SUBJECT: Electronic Commerce The invention of the steam engine two centuries ago and the subsequent harnessing of electricity for communications ushered in an industrial revolution that fundamentally altered the way we work, brought the world's people closer together in time and space, changed the way we organize our economies, and brought us greater prosperity. Today, we are on the verge of another revolution. Inventions like the integrated circuit, the computer, fiber optic cable, and the Internet are changing the way we work, learn, and communicate with each other. Students and teachers can have immediate access to the world's information from their classrooms; doctors can administer diagnoses to patients in remote parts of the globe from their offices; and citizens of many nations are finding additional outlets for personal and political expression. According to several estimates, commerce on the Internet will total tens of billions of dollars by the turn of the century and could expand rapidly after that, helping fuel economic growth well into the 21st century.
