The Crossroads American History curriculum is composed of 3 sets of units for the elementary, middle, and high school grade levels that are divided into 12 time periods. Also included are course syllabi for 2 post secondary courses designed for pre-service history teachers. Each time period has its own set of lessons, objectives, and resources. The curriculum is a framework and expects the teacher to provide the texts and other suggested resources. A series of well-written historical background essays are provided to give teachers an understanding of the time periods and themes around which Crossroads builds its teaching units. The curriculum strives to give an accurate and culturally sensitive portrayal of American history. • Focusing specifically on this University as a unique subculture embedded in contemporary American society, and using the observations and insights described by Katz ( The Importance of Being Beautiful ), Tucker ( Men and Women MBA’s ), and Bem and Bem ( Case Study of a Non-Conscious Ideology ), discuss various ways (both overtly and subtlety) that the University of Washington is stratified by gender. What individual and social structural explanations does Elliott Liebow in his selection from Tally's Corner give as to why the African-American streetcorner men in his ethnography are in the condition they are presently living? Do you agree with his explanations? Do you see any methodological problems with his study? What is race? What is ethnicity? Why do we classify some groups on the basis of color and others on national origin? Who decides on the name of an ethnic group? Who should decide, and what is the significance of changing names for racial/ethnic groups in America (for example, Negroes, blacks, African-Americans; or Indians, Native-Americans, Sioux, etc.). According to Feagin, has the nature of racial discrimination changed for middle class African-Americans since the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's? If so how has it changed, and are the experiences faced by middle class African-Americans similar/dissimilar to those of poor African-Americans?

    Introduction to Psychological Statistics
    Instructor: Barry McLaughlin
In this course, we will examine the logic, strategies, and fundamental techniques of descriptive statistics, and of inferential statistics. And we will try to show you how research designs and strategies relate to statistical strategies and techniques. This course has also been designed as a prerequisite to intermediate Psychology courses in experimental design, statistical methods, and statistical programs aimed at those psychology majors who will eventually do their own research. To this end, we have minimized computation. You will have problems to solve by hand for homework, so that you learn the logic of the statistics. However, there will be only minimal computation required for examinations. You will learn to use computer software to analyze data (Excel). Each of you will acquire your own data set, so that you can see how statistics are applied to real data. We will help you analyze that data set using the various techniques we learn in the course. The goal is to make statistics concrete and even, possibly, exciting. Now some details: Sections: to be announced Exams: four exams of equal value

Overview This course is designed to introduce the student to a Sociological understanding of child welfare This means we not only study the official welfare programs and policies, but also, more importantly, we study the social construction of the phenomenon of child welfare, the dominant ideology that underlies its definition, the ways in which "problems" are identified, and the type of programs and policies that develop. One basic theme that will emerge throughout the semester is that social welfare programs and policies as well as scientific theory and research on children and children's welfare, well-being and interests have very little to do with children. Rather policy and research on "children's welfare" are concerned with an adult agenda which reflects and maintains the privilege of groups in power as that relates to the poor, minorities and women. Historically, child welfare has developed around ideologies that reinforce existing inequalities, that target and blame "the victim", that use children to maintain the "traditional family" which places women and children at risk, to pit the interests of children against those of women but not men, to blame the poor for their poverty, to see variations from the "traditional family" as the cause of poverty and other social ills instead of areas of strength in coping with racism, etc.
