Budapest, Hungary, October 1999 A Paper by: Lepa Mladjenovic, Autonomous Women's Center Against Sexual Violence and Women in Black Against War, Belgrade, Serbia THE POLITICS OF KNOWLEDGE OF DIFFERENCE: thoughts and contradictions in feminist politics in the anti war movement in Belgrade from '91 to '99 Short Introduction: "Good Girls go to heaven, bad girls to LJUBLJANA" was the title of the Fourth Yugoslav Feminist Meeting which was held in May 1991 in Ljubljana, in Slovenia. The organizers at that moment could not think of the depth of the possible meaning of "hell and heaven" in the context of pain that will devastate many women across the homeland in the next years of war and fascism. At that time, in '91, in the state now called Ex Yugoslavia there were 22 million of inhabitants, 21 language spoken, 25 ethnic groups, six republics and the Adriatic sea. Of all employed, 39% were women. In that year, among feminists, nationalism was not yet an issue, abortion neither, the law of 1976 legalized abortion free and on demand. Average standard implied that more than 70% of families have washing machines. Kindergartens were for free, and there were not enough of them. School system and medical care were also state covered and free. Trade unions, instead of protecting worker's rights, took care that workers and their families go to vacations. "Communism before 91", we used to say, "was paradise for children".

Women and Politics in Asia International Conference on Women and Politics in Asia Halmstad, Sweden, 6-7 June, 2003 This international conference will focus on women and politics in Asia and will address politics as a gendered domain. Women compose half of the citizens in the Asian countries. Opportunities for women to be represented in political bodies and to influence political matters are an important parameter of democracy and thus an integral aspect of political development and the democratization process in Asia. Increasing the active participation of women in politics and the representation of women in positions of power remains a crucial step towards obtaining a gender balance in politics. At the same time it is important to examine the "gender" of politics and implications of gender in the political life in Asian countries. The aim of the conference is to study different dimensions of Asian women in politics. The conference is multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary in approach and invites contributions from social sciences and humanities from all parts of the world. The conference will address both quantitative and qualitative aspects of women and politics. Studies on women and politics have suggested a variety of possible explanations for the paucity of women leaders and the marginalization of women in politics. These include electoral systems, party systems, gender-role socialisation, women's movement, political culture, religion, and women's representation among professions from which potential leaders are drawn. The conference looks at both obstacles/constraints to progress and the emerging practices/strategies leading to progress, and encourages both structurally oriented and actor-oriented explanations for either the lack or the increase of women in political bodies in different cultural, political and developmental contexts across Asia.
