Dancing wombats, Christmas edition
Since posting Dancing wombats, Java edition , I have received several visitors through Google searching for dancing wombats , for which I am currently the #1 authoritative source. I have no idea what would possess someone to go to Google and type "dancing wombats"; perhaps they were looking for this Australian Christmas Carol instead: On the TWELFTH day of Christmas,
My true love sent to me,
Twelve possums playing,
Eleven lizards leaping,
Ten wombats washing,
Nine crocs a-snoozing?
Eight dingos dancing
Seven emus laying,
Six sharks a-surfing,
Five kangaroos,
Four lyrebirds, Three wet galahs, Two snakes on skis, And a kookaburra in a gum tree. wondering if the web had become boring Nearby: Home Search this site: Mark Pilgrim Accessibility statement Mobile edition MT You are here: Home Archives March 2002 March 28 Dancing wombats, Christmas edition

Wombats are cute furry creatures from Australia. There are not nearly enough web pages about them, and this page seeks to help fill this obvious shortfall. Wombats belong to the marsupial order of species from Australia. The other marsupials include the koala, kangaroo, wallaby, bandicoot, bilby, nabarlek, quokka, quoll, tasmanian devil, tasmanian tiger and ringtail possum. There is also one species of marsupial found in North America, the Opossum. For information about the the three species of the wombat family and details of their lifestyle and life cycle, see the alt.animals.wombat Frequently Asked Questions list. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is a severely endangered species and the other types are at risk too. Wombats are really much nicer creatures than koalas (too irritable when not drugged up on eucalyptus) and kangaroos (too stupid, and too tiring to watch). Why isn't anyone doing more to save the wombat?

Mama Sets Her Wombat Babies on Their Way
It was a hot morning, a morning much like a morning in God's land no doubt. Sunrays sliced through the gum leaves creating a tattoo of hot and barely cool. Mama Wombat was up with the dawn. She enjoyed the morning cool, before it evaporated like a dream leaving only wisps of memory under the shrubbery or the black fur on her belly. This was a special morning. It was the morning she was going to send her beloved wombrats, as she liked to call them, on their way into the world. Oi! Robbo, Bruce, Raelene, get yer fuzzy butts out here." She yelled. Her three darlings came trotting out from their beds eyes half open, limping in that way that you do when you haven't properly stretched yet. They all loved their mother and couldn't be bothered leaving her. "My dear wombrats," she said, "It has become obvious to me that you've all grown into bloody nuisances and it's about time you shifted for yourselves. I've done all a mama can do to prepare you for this moment. Now I want the lot of you to get out. However, your old mama still has a heart, so to get you started in life I've put aside a little money that I'm going to let you have." And with that she gave to each of her children a bright red five dollar bill . Being a fairytale, we presume that this is a lot of money in the world of magical talking wombats.

http://www.wombatonline.freeuk.com/wombats.htm
Wombats are native Australian or Tasmanian mammals. Like many other antipodean animals, they have strange* reproductive habits (less so than the platypus, which lays green eggs and is a monotreme). They also have constantly growing incisors allowing (nay, encouraging) them to chew on bark, wood, softer rocks etc. Wombats are friendly, loyal, nocturnal, and not overly intelligent. Sir Everard Home reports, "In captivity it is as a rule amiable, the amiability being possibly associated with stupidity." He probably woke it from a nap.
* strange to us, that is - they wouldn't have it any other way.
The family Vombatidae is divided into two groups: the naked-nosed and the hairy-nosed wombats. The naked-nosed group constitutes the genus Vombatuis (or Phascolomis) and includes the Tasmanian Wombat (V. Ursinus) from Tasmania and Flinders Island, and the Common Wombat (V. Hirsutus) from South East Australia. These have coarse, harsh, blackish-brown fur, a hairy muzzle, and larger ears. The consequences of all this to wombat society is further complicated by the question of who has more ribs.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti had a wombat who slept (during the day) in an epergne on the dining room table. He (the wombat) re-appeared as a dormouse in Rev Dodgson's book.

C o mmon W o mbats THE COMMON WOMBAT Wombats, like all Australian mammals, are protected by law. This information is designed to help you understand and learn to live with them. The wombat is Australias largest burrowing animal. The average adult weighs around 28Kgs with the odd one up to 40Kgs. It is a grazing mammal, very strong and quite fast over short distances. Their life span is thought to be anything up to 20 years. Young are kept in pouch for 6 to 10 months and stay at heel (next to mum) for 18 months. Females have a backward facing pouch (same as Koalas) and have 2 teats, rearing 1 joey at a time. They can drop up to 100 scats (poos) per night. They sleep in burrows by day and at night graze up to 5 hectares. They eat coarse tough, high-fibre native grasses, some favoured being Tussock, Kangaroo, Spears, Rushes and Wire grasses. The occasional Fungi, fibrous bark, fallen twigs and sometimes even burnt logs are nibbled. Most grasses eaten by the wombat are not eaten by sheep or cattle, so therefore wombats help keep these grasses in check. Because wombats are most active at night, wombats found in the day may be sick or injured. Sarcoptic Mange (thought to have been introduced by Europeans with the fox and domestic dog) is infecting many wombats in this area. If you come across a wombat like this Please ring

· A wombat is a marsupial mammal meaning it carries its baby in its pouch on the outside of its tummy. The baby (which is called a joey) is born really tiny and crawls into its mother's pouch. The joey lives in its mother's pouch till its quite large. Even when it's quite large it still drinks milk from a teat in its mother's pouch. Click here for Wombat photos! · Wombats are more closely related to the koala than to any other living marsupial · Both females have pouches that open rearwards (unlike kangaroos) · Common wombats are solitary and largely nocturnal, sheltering during the day in burrows. Every night, wombats can graze from 3-8 hours and can travel for many kilometres looking for food · Wombats are herbivorous, they mainly eat at night - particularly native grasses and sedges and eating the roots of trees and shrubs Wombats are large, heavily built marsupials - an adult can weight from 26kg to 40kg. They are usually a metre long from nose to tail and about 35cm high

Though quite adept at public speaking, rarely are the Wombats approached for such duties, due to their reclusive nature, occasional ill-temper, and the side-effects of illegal genetic experiments Though they may have a public reputation as vengeful psychopaths , as portrayed in the recent popular entertainment films Mortal Wombat , and the timeless classic WomBatman , their actual demeanor is quite pleasant so long as no mention of marsupial heritage is brought into the conversation. 4 legs Wombats have the basic form... ...and usually come in 3 flavors: the common Wombat, the northern hairy-nosed Wombat, and the southern hairy-nose Wombat. 1 mouth 2 ears 2 eyes some fur 1 tail vacant stare no money good spelling DotComitas Wombat Control When Wombats are spotted, we suggest you use any one of these tried-and-true Wombat disposal methods: DotComitas Wombat Drop

I know what you're thinking: how does Mike manage to review his own game without giving it at least twelve out of ten in every category? Well it's something I've been worrying about too! I obviously couldn't do it myself, and even if I asked someone else to do it, then it wouldn't be easy for them, knowing I'd be reading the review before it was printed. So bugger it, I thought, when a hairy little Balrog offered to do the review for me - I've got to print something. I've not let him give it any marks (in case the suspicious amongst you should suspect him of bias) but other than that, over to you, hairy little Balrog...
With his feet firmly planted on the kitchen table and a steaming mug of coffee in his hand, Balrog was attempting to remove a large wad of bluish-grey fluff from the depths of his belly-button with the aid of the bread-knife. The rattle of the letter-box shattered the early morning silence, startling the Balrog, causing him to swing the knife downwards. Luckily for him it caught the safety-pin that was holding his flies together and glanced off to one side.
"Whoops," he cried, "that was a close escape. Mrs Balrog would never have forgiven me if I'd spilt blood on the carpet."

Daring Wombats 3 - 1 Burn FM
Team: Terry, Dave, Jan, Rob, Charlie, Andy
Attendance: 2
A promising start to the season saw the Wombats take advantage of the 5-man Burn FM team and left them feeling Radio GaGa. The pre-season signing of Rob is proving beneficial as his tireless running and general tenacity gave the Wombats the bite they needed. Jan too, ably deputising for the injured Iain, ran around and covered well. The first half was relatively uneventful, with the Wombats having more possession without carving out many clear cut opportunities. The breakthrough came just 30 seconds before half-time when Jan ran down the left flank and cut the ball back for Dave to calmly score his first goal for the Wombats.
Rob doubled the lead mid-way through the second half after a throw in was passed to him and he turned and fired the ball into the corner of the goal. Burn FM fought back after this and a swift counter attack gave them a goal and hope that they might get back into the match. Charlie, however, had other ideas and from a break of our own, he took the ball and finished nicely. A period of sustained pressure followed from Burn, but all to no avail. It was the Wombats, and not video, that killed the radio stars.

A bad start to the season, thanks to the non-appearance of our new foreign import. The five remaining Daring Wombats struggled in vain against the six -pronged assault on our defences. Terry tried manfully to keep the score down, pulling off a string of fine saves, but our over-stretched team was left exposed at the back (as it were) when we tried to push forward, and were caught on the counter attack on several occasions. Andy had a few runs at the Ming defence, resulting in shots missing narrowly and a corner, from which Dave's follow up shot was blocked and Ming broke on the counter and Terry was left with no chance. Iain was unlucky with an ambitious back-flick which forced a fine save from the Ming keeper.
