They are mammals A female wombat's pouch opens backwards so that when mum is digging she doesn't cover her baby with sand. Because wombat babies live in their mother's pouch drinking her milk, wombats are marsupials Baby wombats stay with their mum for about two years. They then have to look after themselves. Wombats have thick soft fur. Their strong legs and claws are good for digging burrows to live in. They are very shy. They are nocturnal animals. Most of the day they sleep in a burrow. In the evening or at night they go looking for food. They are herbivores To keep themselves clean they have a dust bath. They lie on their side and scoop sand over themselves. They can swim. Their teeth grow continuously, so if they break a tooth it just re-grows. Wombat droppings are called scats. Each wombat's scats have a different smell. They leave them outside their burrows.

Man accused of killing wombats
A MAN who allegedly killed several wombats by repeatedly running them over has been charged with cruelty.
Bathurst Police today said they had charged a 46-year-old man from Portland, near Lithgow, after the bodies of 12 wombats were discovered in NSW's Wollemi National Park last week. Investigators believe the wombats were killed early last week. It is alleged the wombats were run over by a vehicle, in some cases several times. The body of one animal has been sent to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, where it is hoped an examination will determine how it died.
The man has been charged with aggravated cruelty, cruelty and harming native fauna. He was released on conditional bail to appear in Lithgow Local Court on March 6.

http://www.wombat.echidna.id.au/animals/wombat1.htm
Wombats are without a doubt (in my extremely biased opinion) the most lovable of Australia's many marsupials. They are large enough to substitute for your average family dog and are just as playful - at least while they're young. It must be said however that Wombats don't automatically do well in captivity and only a handful would make a suitable pet. Please don't write to me asking where you can buy one! You can't. I don't reply to such emails. In particular anyone outside Australia should realize that there is a good chance that any Australian fauna that you might come upon has been smuggled out of this country. A high proportion of smuggled fauna dies in transit. Don't buy Australian fauna unless you are certain it has been obtained legally. Otherwise you are just helping the murderers. Wonderful Wombats There are three species of Wombats. The most numerous and widespread is the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus ). The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latrifrons) is an arid climate animal and only lives in a few areas of southern South Australia and Western Australia. Its range was much wider before European settlement. It is well adapted to it's harsh environment where it must survive without water in high temperatures. The available food tends to be fibrous and low in water and protein. It lives in extensive warrens where the atmosphere is cool and humid during

http://users.cybernex.net.au/wombat/wombats.htm
WOMBATS Wombats are a marsupial unique to Australia. The largest burrowing herbivores in the world, they come in two groups, the Common Wombat - Genus Vombatus ursinus and the Hairy Nosed Wombat - Genera Lasiorhinus and Wombatula Early reference books classified wombats somewhat differently to that of today. The seventh edition of "FURRED ANIMALS OF AUSTRALIA" by Ellis Troughton, C.M.Z.S., F.R.Z.S., published in 1962 stated that there were two genera of wombats, each having two members. The Naked-nosed or Coarse-haired wombats, genera Vombatus contained of two members, Vombatus ursinus the Tasmanian Wombat and Vombatus hirsutus the Common Wombat. The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat was listed as Lasiorhinus latifrons and the Queensland Hairy-nosed Wombat was Wombatula gillespiei The "LARUUSSE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANIMAL LIFE" published by THE HAMLYN PUBLISHING GROUP, Second Impression 1968, records the existence of two species of wombat for the family Vombatidae - the Island Wombat, Vombatus ursinus and the Common Wombat, Vombatus hirsutus . The hairy nosed wombats are recorded as genera Lasiorhinus and Wombatula.

General features
Wombats grow to about 1.3 metres in length, and can weigh up to 36 kilograms. They have a large, blunt head with small eyes and ears, and a short, muscular neck. Their sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make them great diggers. Wombats have been known to live for up to 27 years in captivity. Where they live view a threatened species profile (PDF format - 185KB)
Feeding habits
Setting out territory
Wombats live in burrows, liking well-drained soils that are easy to dig in. The burrows, which are often built on the sides of gullies, can be up to 30 metres long, and several metres deep. Wombats generally stay in the burrows during the day, kept warm in winter and cool in summer. They will often share their home with other wombats. Although they will share burrows, wombats are possessive about their particular feeding grounds. They mark out these areas by leaving scent trails and droppings around the boundaries. If an intruding wombat moves in on their territory, it will be discouraged through a series of snorts, screeches and even a chase. As a result, the wombat population of an area is dependent on the number of available feeding grounds. A young wombat can sometimes take the place of an adult that has died, but often it will be forced to move to another area to find its own feeding ground.
