Primary/Middle Teacher Certification Program
A major goal of the Exceptional Education Department at UWM is to prepare teachers with a commitment to the diverse group of students with disabilities who are served in schools and community settings. Our intent is to prepare teachers who are versed in both the practical and the visionary. Our certification programs lead to a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction teaching license.
Individuals holding a 4 year degree may qualify for the UWM/MPS Special Education Internship Program.
**The Department of Exceptional Education offers a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program For additional information about the program, please click here

Troops to Teachers Program
Troops to Teachers stipend and bonus Eligible veterans who are interested in becoming teachers through the Troops to Teachers Program now may receive a stipend of up to $5,000 to help defray certification costs incurred for academic credits or alternative certification programs. Veterans willing to teach in schools identified as "high need" may qualify for a $10,000 bonus in lieu of the stipend. Veterans who receive financial assistance are obligated to teach for three years in schools serving students from low-income families.
Final approval for enrollment rests with the Department of Defense.
The Troops to Teachers program is managed by the Department of Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) ,which may provide funding to veterans and eligible schools that hire them. Statement of Purpose The purpose of this program is to prepare the student to become a reading teacher and supply the required "competencies" of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for certification as Reading Teacher, grades K-12. In addition, all courses in this program can be applied to the requirements of the MST-Reading degree. Procedures for Applying for Certification If you intend to obtain certification as a Reading Teacher and then perhaps continue to work for the MST-Reading degree* with or without certification as a Reading Specialist:
  • Apply for admission as an MST-Reading student. Obtain a copy of "Program for Master of Science in Teaching-Reading" from either the College of Professional Studies or the Curriculum and Instruction Department. This explains the MST program in detail. Once accepted into the program, an advisor will be appointed to you as described in the program description.

    General information: Students work in schools throughout their certification program. Field experiences begin with introductory courses and provide students opportunities to work in a variety of school settings and with practicing teachers and administrators who represent various teaching styles and educational philosophies.
    Student teaching: Although student teaching usually takes place in Beloit-area schools, other opportunities exist, which can be completed at cooperating schools in Wisconsin, Illinois, or Minnesota. In addition, the College participates in a program of student teaching in Chicago schools sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. Students also have a chance to do part of their student teaching in Australia, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales.
    Teacher placement: A teacher placement bureau under the direction of Field and Career Services is maintained to assist certified students in obtaining positions and also to aid in the advancement of alumni in the teaching profession.
    All courses are one unit, unless otherwise indicated.

    CHAPTER PI 34 AND THE WISCONSIN TEACHER STANDARDS
    The national movement to develop standards for both pre-kindergarten through grade 12 schools and higher education and the demand for greater accountability of teachers and students to demonstrate what they know and are able to do are primary forces behind the creation of the new Chapter PI-34, Wisconsin Administrative Code. The section of PI 34 that deals with teacher program approval became effective on July 1, 2000. The section that deals with teacher licensing will be effective on July 1, 2004.     Additional Requirements for Teacher Certification
    French, German, Russian, Spanish Minimum Grade Point Average To be certified to teach a foreign language, you must complete the teaching major or minor with an overall grade point average of 3.0 in all college-level courses taken in the language you plan to teach, regardless of declaration of academic bankruptcy. In addition you must fulfill the following special requirements. Residency Requirement You must complete an appropriate period of residency in a country where the language is spoken, or participate in an alternative language immersion experience which must be approved by the Department. All teacher candidates in foreign languages should participate in a language based semester study abroad program, such as those offered by UW-SP in France, Germany, and Spain, or a junior year abroad. With the prior approval of the Department, students may substitute alternative experiences such as immersion programs or summer study abroad. Oral and Written Proficiency Requirement To be certified to teach a foreign language at elementary, middle, or secondary level, you must pass oral and written proficiency tests given by the Department before your application to student teach will be approved.
