Contact: Frank Emspak (608) 262-0680 School for Workers leads unions into hi-tech ventures Madison- In an effort to bring the local, national, and international labor movement into the hi-tech arena, the University of Wisconsin-Extension School for Workers (SFW) is co-sponsoring an international conference here next month. The conference "Labor Solidarity Through LaborTECH- Building New Global Unionism Through Labor Media" will be held December 1-3, 2000 at UW-Extension's The Pyle Center on the UW-Madison campus. According to SFW Professor Frank Emspak, the purpose of the conference is to encourage labor activists to use the full range of new and emerging media technologies to support the union movement and to place the often-unheard voices of working people into the forefront of community discussion. "One aspect of globalization has been the development technologies that create new media and communication opportunities for unions and supporters of labor rights throughout the world," said Emspak. "Working people need to find ways to use these emerging technologies to communicate intelligently and effectively with each other, their community, and others internationally. LaborTECH 2000 is a conference designed to introduce the participants to others who are using many types of new technologies and media."

Peter Nordgren, Assistant Professor Programs The emphasis of the Library Science program is on preparing students for positions in school library media centers. However, coursework in the program may be useful in obtaining selected positions in academic, specialized and public libraries. Additionally, the program provides a solid foundation toward an advanced degree in Library Science. Competencies developed in the required and elective courses of the Library Science curriculum will satisfy requirements for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Initial Instructional Library Media Specialist License (901), the DPI Instructional Library Media Specialist License (902), and the Minnesota Media Generalist License. Library science students expecting to be certified for service in a school library/media center must complete a professional experience. To complete the Library Science minor and qualify for the 901 license requires completion of 24 semester hours of coursework, not including the professional experience. Students seeking teaching certification in either Wisconsin or Minnesota will fulfill the professional experience requirement during their student teaching. Candidates for the 901 license who are already teacher certified and are looking to enhance their professional credentials will fulfill the professional experience requirement by registering for TED 445: Supervised Practice for In-Service Teachers. Typically, teacher-certified students enhancing their credentials will need to complete at least 15 hours of the coursework before being considered for professional experience assignment.

Amity Senior High School believes it has struck an excellent balance of collaboration and learning with a three-to-one student-to-computer ratio in classrooms, labs, and media centers. With thin clients clustered in resource rooms for each curricular area, students and teachers will have better access to curriculum-based technology resources. Additional licenses will ensure home access to specialized software and educational content.

North Hunterdon Voorhees High School District, Annandale, New Jersey
This high school district plans to move all of the applications used in different departments to a centralized server-based computing system so that students and teachers can work on assignments using the appropriate tools from classrooms, libraries, and home. By integrating the application tools, the district expects to integrate instruction in different subject areas. For example, math software can be accessed in science rooms, and music software is available in English classrooms. Northview High School, Grand Rapids, Michigan

NEW INTERNET RESOURCE GUIDE FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS! ** note: This page has been translated from the original (submitted) resource document Some links may have been changed or moved.
This site is based on research conducted by Sally Moses.
This project focused on research of the resources available on the Internet. The end product was an Internet resource guide for use in a K12 media center by students, teachers, and media specialists. By targeting a varied audience, the researcher was able to discover the resources that were availablefor all the people that a media specialist may serve. In addition, the researcher focused on reference and bibliographic sources for students because those resources would benefit the greatest number of students. For media specialists and teachers, she (Sally Moses) chose resources that would support their professions.
