Abbotsford Green Bay Monona Sheboygan ... Wisconsin Rapids WISCONSIN - Geography Upper midwestern state of the United States. It is bounded by Lake Superior and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, from which it is divided by the Menominee R. (N); Lake Michigan (E); Illinois (S); and Iowa and Minnesota (W), with the Mississippi R. forming much of that border. The most notable physiographic feature of the state is its profusion of lakes, over 8,500, ranging in size from Lake Winnebago (215 sq mi/557 sq km) to relatively tiny glacial lakes of surprising beauty. The Wisconsin River, with its extensive dam system, runs generally southward through the middle of the state until it turns west (just NW of Madison) to flow into the Mississippi, dividing the state into eastern and western sectors. Running a parallel course just to the east, Wisconsin's major watershed extends in a broad arc from north to south; to the east the Menominee, the Peshtigo, the Wolf, and the Fox rivers flow E and NE into Lake Michigan, while to the west the Chippewa, the Flambeau, and the Black rivers make their way to the Mississippi. Wisconsin's frontage on both lakes Superior and Michigan, as well as its many beautiful lakes, streams, and its northern woodlands, has made it a haven for hunters, fishermen, and water and winter sports enthusiasts. There are numerous state parks, forests, and two national forests. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is also there. Madison is the capital and the second largest city; Milwaukee is the largest city. Green Bay and Racine are other major cities.

B.S. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (atmospheric science), 1982 Brief biography: I have long had an interest in weather and climate, which probably is related to growing up on a dairy farm in southeastern Wisconsin. I completed my B.S. in Atmospheric Science in 1982, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In addition to meteorology, I took some climatology and physical geography courses offered by the Geography Department. Those classes piqued my interest in geography, especially Donn Haglund's Arctic Winter Field Course, which that year took us to Greenland and Iceland. I decided to do graduate work in a Geography department, opting to pursue climatology rather than meteorology. I completed my graduate work in the Geography Department at the University of Delaware, receiving an M.S. in Geography in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Climatology in 1992. I joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in January of 1992.

    WISCONSIN MODEL ACADEMIC STANDARDS
    FOR SOCIAL STUDIES
    INTRODUCTION
I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but with the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take power from them, but to inform their discretion through instruction. -Thomas Jefferson (1820) In order to ensure our survival as a free nation, students at all grade levels in Wisconsin are required to learn about the principles and ideals upon which the United States is founded and understand the world in which they live. Definition of Social Studies "Social studies" is the title used to describe the study of the social sciences and humanities. Within the curriculum, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study of information, skills, and concepts from the disciplines of history, geography, political science, economics, anthropology, psychology, law, archaeology, and sociology with attention also given to connections among the peoples and nations of the world, the effect of science and technology on society (and vice versa), and the ways to practice good citizenship. Social studies helps young people develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. Knowledge and Skills Students at all levels should develop skills and understandings in all five strands found in the Wisconsin standards for social studies. These skills and understandings are embedded in the performance standards. The curriculum in elementary and middle schools establishes the foundation for the entire social studies program. Without this foundation, students cannot develop the attitudes nor acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in a democratic society and understand an increasingly complex world. It is also important to recognize that the designated levels, by grade four, by grade eight, and by grade twelve, lead students to higher and deeper levels of knowledge and skills as they progress through school.

ABSTRACT: Records, mostly dating from the 1960s and 1970s, containing correspondence, and faculty and departmental meeting minutes concerning staffing, equipment and space needs, and curriculum development. The collection also contains minutes of the Ad Hoc Committee on Urban Geography, which studied the courses offered in Urban Geography and the department's possible cooperation with other UWM departments in their urban projects. Reports and correspondence in the graduate program files document the department's attempts to establish a masters program and a doctoral program at UWM. The collection contains some reports about the federally funded NDEA Institute for Advanced Study in Geography, which introduced field geography to teachers of geography in grades 4-12. The Institute was held on UWM's campus and directed by UWM faculty and staff. The only item predating 1955 is Louise W. Mears' 1923 pamphlet, "Around Milwaukee" : Land and Lake as a Laboratory , written while she was a geography teacher at the State Normal School in Milwaukee.
