In the Spring 1997, the Director of Student Retention conducted an exit survey to ascertain the reasons for student attrition and to explore characteristics of students who left West Virginia State College. The students analyzed were registered with six (6) or more credit hours in the Fall 1996 semester but were not registered in the Spring 1997 semester. Withdrawals were included and graduates were excluded. The total number surveyed was 571. Headcount for the Fall 1996 semester was 4,545thus, there was approximately a 13% attrition rate. As a special note, headcount includes all students enrolled, the students looked at were registered for at least six (6) or more credit hours. The actual attrition rate is probably higher than 13%.
