Olympic History: Swimming
There is no exact date for when swimming was invented, but there is evidence dating the sport back for centuries. Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

To begin, The Weightlifting News has a new name - SNATCH IT! And, with this new name comes a new bimonthly format. However, while we will be publishing only half as many issues, our goal is to make the publication twice as good. We will do this by including more articles, more contest results, and more color photos as part of each bimonthly issue. Also, in an effort to attract more subscribers, we have reduced our yearly subscription rate to $29.95. We hope these changes will lead to many more subscribers, and many more years of publishing National and World Weightlifting news. Don't let another issue go by, subscribe today! Editor, Brian Dorn

WEIGHTLIFTING HISTORY Origin of Weightlifting:

Weightlifting: starting with the basics
As a basic athletic activity and a natural means to measure strength and power, the lifting of weights was present in both the ancient Egyptian and Greek societies. Boosting its international importance chiefly in the 19th Century, weightlifting was among those few sports (alongside athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, shooting and cycling) which featured already on the programme of the first Modern Olympic Games, in 1896, Athens. The first World Championships in this sport, however, had been staged five years earlier: on 28th March 1891, in London, with 7 athletes representing 6 countries.
Weightlifting is thus the only sport whose history in world-wide competitions spans across three centuries: from 1891 through the 20th Century until our days, in 2001.
The power-relations have undergone major changes over the past decades. At the beginning of the century, Austria, Germany and France used to be the most successful nations. Later on, Egypt, then the United States of America reigned. In the 1950s and the following three decades the Soviet Union's weightlifters played the protagonists' role - with Bulgaria becoming a main challenger. Since the mid-'90s, however, Turkey, Greece and China have catapulted to the lead. The most recent word power in weightlifting is Greece among the men. In the women's field, China has been dominant since the very beginning, with other Asian countries emerging as strong contenders to the champion titles. On the overall, however, Europe is the most powerful continent in competitions of both genders.

    The History of Weightlifting
The genealogy of lifting traces back to the beginning of recorded history where man's fascination with physical prowess can be found among numerous ancient writings. A 5,000-year-old Chinese text tells of prospective soldiers having to pass lifting tests. Ancient Greek sculptures also depict lifting feats. The weights were generally stones, but later gave way to dumbbells. The origin of the word dumbbells comes from the practice of removing clappers from bells, rendering them soundless during lifting. The U.S. men, after reigning as World and Olympic Champions through the 1930's, '40s and '50s, were ranked 15th in the world in 1996 after a successful Olympic Games performance in Atlanta, GA. The U.S. junior men are ranked 13th in the world. In 2000, Oscar Chaplin III was Junior World Champion in the 77kg weight class and the United States first and only ever gold medal for Junior Men. Women's weightlifting has been conducted at the World Championships level since 1987. U.S. women have won medals in eight of the thirteen World Championships and continue to be a power in the world arena. In 1994, U.S. lifter Robin Goad was the World Champion in the 50kg class
