Create Curriculum Units Using the World Wide Web Resources Lesson 6 Online Projects and Treasure Hunts You will be able to: 1.Describe the benefits of telecommunications projects.
2.Locate online telecommunications projects.
3.Create a treasure hunt to be used with the final project. There are many quality telecommunications projects available on the Internet. YOU can enrich your curriculum and the learning experience of your students by participating in these projects. YOU can also create your own telecommunications project. An example is a treasure hunt.
The Internet has often been referred to as the great educational equalizer because of the opportunities students have to interact with scientists, researchers, artists, and teachers regardless of the students' ability or socioeconomic level. Projects are a great way to begin to expand the world for your students. Telecommunications projects can be very involved and/or competitive. Students can follow NASA days before a launch and communicate with scientists via email. Students can follow a cross-country journey of researchers traveling across a continent to learn about different cultures. Students can drop in on explorers in Africa and view pictures of the area and read field notes.

The most successful activity I have been using involving the Internet and the World Wide Web is Internet Treasure Hunts (or Scavenger Hunts as they are alternatively known). In an Internet Treasure Hunt Treasure Hunts. Several of the Online Treasure Hunts have been specifically designed for ESL students and the Internet TESL Journal at http://www.aitech.ac.jp/~iteslj/th/ maintains a useful link to a collection of these. Other prepared Treasure Hunts can be found on the WWW. Some are for ESL students and others are designed for Primary or High school students but can often be used with ESL students as well. Alternatively, teachers can make up their own and even publish them on the web through their own homepage or through a site such as the Internet TESL Journal. A variation on the Treasure Hunt

This paper gives an overview of the journal from its inception to the present.
    Introduction
    http://www.aitech.ac.jp/~iteslj
    A Brief History
The Internet TESL Journal was started in 1995 with Charles Kelly and Lawrence Kelly as the editors. Its original focus was to provide a web-based journal for English as a Second Language teachers. At first, it only provided articles, research papers, lessons, lesson plans and classroom handouts. Within a few months the page of links that was previously maintained by Charles Kelly on another server was taken over as a project of the journal. In mid-1996, the first project for ESL students was begun. This was the "Self-study Quizzes for ESL Students" project. This has grown from the original six quizzes to over 500 quizzes. Other projects for students include the "Crossword Puzzles for ESL Students" begun in mid-1997 and the "Treasure Hunts for ESL Students" begun in early 1998. The projects for teachers include "Jokes for the ESL Classroom" and "Conversation Questions for the ESL Classroom". Both of these began in 1997.

Jefferson Elementary School is a Louisiana Challenge Grant Site. It received Professional Improvement and Competitive Grants for three consecutive years to enhance a Professional Development Program. INTRODUCTION Throughout the developmental training, (1996-97) DEVELOPMENTAL TRAINING teachers were demonstrating and presenting methodologies and using on-line resources to enhanced their classroom delivery. During the second year,(1997-98) we focused on refining these methodologies as well as training teachers to create Web-based instructional activities to bring back to their classrooms. Web-based instructional activities provided the structured vehicles for content learning as well as for methodology. The instructional models used in this training, Activity Formats (http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/formats.html) , provided developmentally appropriate experiences that progressed from open exploration tasks (HOTLISTS) , to knowledge-building tasks (TREASURE HUNTS) , to problem solving tasks (WEBQUESTS) , while transposing teacher-learners from beginners to experienced web-based teachers, one-step at a time.
