Web Site Usability Testing
Are you currently building a new web site or making major changes to your existing one? Critical to your new site's success are:
  • Effective navigation
  • Site organization
  • Page structure/layout
  • Usable file sizes
  • Effective use of color
  • Cross browser/platform consistency
  • Accessibility
The Web Publishing department at Publications Services has extensive experience testing web site usability. We can help to optimize your new site by running it through a checklist of basic tests of accepted usability standards.
  • Can you get to anywhere on your site with less than three clicks of the mouse?
  • Do all of your pages take less than 10 seconds to load?
  • Do your Javascripts work on all of the available browsers that support it?
  • Are your pages accessible to people with disabilities?
Launching a new web site is an exciting experience, but it can also be agonizing if you have to go back and make fixes once it is live. We can help you avoid the major pitfalls.

September/October 2000 Vol. 18 No. 5 NGS Standards: Guidelines for Web Publishing
Researchers formerly approached publishing family histories in book format with all the solemnity that the work of a lifetime deserves. But the ease of Web publishing has provided a new-found freedom in presenting pedigrees to the world. No serious researcher would ever consider printing his or her family history on black paper with neon pink letters, but that option is available with Web publishing. Similarly, genealogists formerly decorated family histories with only the cherished photographs of ancestors. Now we can easily add animation, blinking text, and other theatrics to our genealogy Web pages. Decoration aside, genealogy Web pages should be held to the same standards to which other genealogical publications are held. Because Web publishing has become so simple and ubiquitous, we often find that a genealogical Web site may be the only place where the results of genealogical research are published in any form. Recognizing this, the National Genealogical Society has recommended a set of guidelines for publishing Web pages. Called

Web Design Books
Information Architecture for the World Wide Web (2nd edition), by Louis Rosenfeld and Peter Morville
This is without a doubt the second-most useful book on Web design on the market (sorry, but I like my own book just a little better :-). The authors' emphasis is on the structure of the site and how to facilitate users' access to the information they need the most. Even though these are crucial issues in Web usability, they are often overlooked in the quest for cool pages (that download slowly and are impossible to navigate). I liked the manuscript enough to write the foreword to both the first edition and the second edition
Son of Web Pages That Suck: Learn Good Design by Looking at Bad Design , by Vincent Flanders
The hardcopy version of Flander's celebrated website : less conceptual than Information Architecture but more fun. Truly, there are so many useless Web pages out there that one can learn a lot from reading these well-argued criticisms. (The "son of" book is the second edition. Is it worth getting if you have already read the first edition? Depends on

Designing Web Usability:
The Practice of Simplicity
Jakob Nielsen
New Riders 1999 A book review by Danny Yee Designing Web Usability is the most important book on web publishing yet to appear. While it contains little that is novel, at least to those who have read Nielsen's www.useit.com web site and other such resources, the lessons it teaches have not reached widely enough: there are all too many web sites that are a continual source of frustration and stress to users. (Nielsen begins by explaining why he chose to write a printed book on web design: for comprehensive, sustained arguments online reading is not yet as effective as print. Another consideration is that, going by the utter un-usability of so many corporate web sites, there must be many web site managers who don't actually use the web: some of these might read a printed volume.) At the core of Designing Web Usability , and two thirds of it by page-count, are chapters on page, content, and site design. The first covers cross-platform design, the importance of minimising response times, how to use links effectively, and the advantages and disadvantages of style-sheets and frames. The second covers writing for the web, micro-content (titles, headlines and so forth), and multimedia content (images, animation, audio, and video). The last covers navigation, home pages ("splash screens must die"), search support, and "URL design". Other chapters cover special usability issues with intranets, accessibility for users with disabilities, and internationalisation and localisation; in a final chapter Nielsen takes a stab at predicting the future of the Web.

Recent times have seen a growing awareness of issues related to the accessibility, usability and inclusivity of websites, reflecting, perhaps, a more general social sense of the exclusion or marginalisation of certain minority groups within society. Particularly people with disabilities. As ever, America tends to lead the way; the US has already enacted laws aimed at making all Federal websites accessible to the disabled, and imposed severe penalties on those who failed to bring their websites into line by mid-2001. This Act attracted a great deal of attention in the US, but it was only part of a more general trend that had been going on for some years.

CAST examined existing Web accessibility guidelines, recognized the improbability of Web developers sitting down and reading a handbook of guidelines, and wanted to create an online tool Web designers could use to easily implement those guidelines."

Usability On The Web Isn't A Luxury

On the Internet, it's survival of the easiest: If customers can't find a product, they can't buy it. It's cheaper to increase the design budget than the ad budget, and attention to usability can increase the percentage of Web-site visitors who complete a purchase. By Jakob Nielsen and Donald A. Send Us Your Feedback he Web puts user experience of the site first, purchase and payment second. On the Web, users first experience the usability of a site and then buy something. Give users a good experience and they're apt to turn into frequent and loyal customers. But the Web also offers low switching costs; it's easy to turn to another supplier in the face of even a minor hiccup. Only if a site is extremely easy to use will anybody bother staying around. The real difference between a person's behavior on the Web and in the physical world of real stores involves switching costshow much effort it takes to switch from one vendor to another. In a physical store, the costs of switching are high. The person has driven to the store, entered the building, and walked deep into the interior. Even when faced with dwindling supplies, inattentive or rude salespeople, and lines at the checkout counter, the purchaser is apt to stick with it. The cost of leaving, going to another store, and then possibly encountering the same behavior is usually not worth the effort. Of course, in the physical world, many people then never return.
