Skiers from the Chinese Water Ski Association performed an excellent ski show including paragliding and pyramids to entertain the spectators on both days. Once again the Chinese Water Ski Association are to be congratulated on taking on such a challenging exhibition, a logistical nightmare 950 km from the nearest water ski site in Beijing. While training was curtailed as a result of windy conditions the weather improved significantly for the competition proper. Results based on best score over 3 jumps on each day were: Click " here " for the result! Wakeboard Donation Campaign At the recent All China Sports Meeting ski tournament we have witnessed the great potential shown by the Chinese younsters in wakeboarding. However, the lack of proper equipment and instruction is a limiting factor to the growth of the sport. After the tournament, Jon Cannon and Trish Blomfield had graciously donated their board and bindings to the Chinese team. I see this as a good initiative in showing our support. To show our further support in helping China to develop wakeboarding, we are calling for the support from wakeboard suppliers and riders to start a wakeboard equipment donation campaign. The goal is to get at least 10 boards and bindings of various sizes, ropes and handles for distribution to the various provincial teams through the Chinese Water Ski Association. These equipment could be used or old models of relatively good conditions. If you have friends who have old boards/bindings that are not being used/sold anymore please ask them to consider donating them to China. This will help the sport and the industry in the long run if wakeboarding becomes a popular sport in China.

    http://www.britishwaterski.co.uk/worldclass/welcome.htm
British Water Ski World Class Programmes What's it all about?
The Government wants to motivate the population to participate in sport. One way they looked to do this was through establishing successful sports to assist in funding to win medals and gain success. Tournament and Disabled Water Skiing had an excellent track record and they chose to back these disciplines. Wakeboarding, Cable Skiing, Barefoot and Racing were also put forward but either these disciplines did not have a big enough following on the World Stage (i.e. not enough countries competing at a World Championships) or their organisation was not as advanced internationally.
This is a two-way deal though, if success is not forthcoming then the money will not be available.
    What about the grass roots?
    Good question.
The funding of elite sport is only a small part of the Lottery funding and there is even more money being aimed at facilities and community activities through a number of schemes. Though not one of the identified key sports (you can name them now - football, cricket etc.), British Water Ski is preparing to get access to this. Experience of the Lottery shows that the first through the door have a better chance of getting funds and British Water Ski has been on the ball and now has all its World Class programmes in place assisting promising skiers from the age of 12 upwards.
But that strategy is wrong, it would be better to solely develop grass roots first?

Women Go Extreme in Summer Sports
By David Romanelli The 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta propelled women's sports into the headlines. With the gold medal team victories in soccer and basketball, images of U.S. women Olympians draped in medals amid the Stars and Stripes flashed across TV screens and magazine covers for weeks following the games. The so-called advent of women's sports now has evolved beyond the basics into the extreme . Traditional sports, such as basketball and soccer, may take a back seat to kayaking, water skiing, wakeboarding and surfing to just name a few of the more popular women's extreme sports. Extreme sports are here to stay. It is likely that the next generation of Americans will grow up choosing between football and in-line skating in the fall, basketball and snowboarding in the winter, and baseball and wakeboarding in the summer. Our Olympic champions and heroes could be surfing and kayaking their way onto cereal boxes of the future, and the NCAA version of the X Games very well could rival January's football bowl games.

IOC Says All New Sports Must Include Women

    By Stephen Wilson
    Associated Press
    Monday, February 2, 1998; 6:33 a.m. EST
If any new sports are added to future Olympics, they must include women's events, IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said today. "The Olympic movement is determined to make its contribution so that the 21st century marks the beginning of a new era for women in world sport,'' Samaranch said in opening the International Olympic Committee session on the eve of the Nagano Games. On Sunday, the IOC approved women's modern pentathlon for the 2000 Sydney Games. Women's weightlifting and women's water polo already are planned for Sydney. "The IOC has decided that any new sport wishing to be included in the Olympic program must comprise women's events,'' Samaranch said in a speech. The IOC gave provisional recognition last week to the federations representing sumo wrestling and bodybuilding. Wrestling and boxing, two male-only sports already in the summer games, are pushing to include women's events. Sydney officials said the move boosts the total proportion of female athletes to 42 percent, an increase of 5 percent over the previous record at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

    http://www.chessnews.org/blow.htm
A FINAL BLOW TO CHESS DRUG TESTING? The idea that chessplayers should be subjected to drug testing in order for the game to become part of the Olympics appears to be fading fast. Earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee rejected chess as a sport, delivering a blow to support for drug testing in the United States. Now the International Olympic Committee has likewise refused to accept chess and other "mind sports" as part of the Olympics. The IOC is reducing rather than increasing the number of Olympic sports, and even popular sports of a physical nature such as bowling, racquetball, water skiing and squash have now been rejected. It should now be clear to even the drug testing diehards that the chances for chess to become part of the Olympics any time in the foreseeable future are nil. It is time to stop the debate and give up on FIDE's ridiculous idea that mandating drug testing now in various tournaments will lead to eventual recognition of chess as an Olympic sport. Congratulations to Executive Director Frank Niro for being the first USCF representative to openly challenge FIDE's ridiculous drug testing policy. Hopefully our Executive Board and FIDE representatives will follow Niro's lead. It is long overdue for USCF to stand up for what is right at FIDE meetings, and I believe that the result is likely to be the end of the idea that drug testing is needed in chess.

Of course, when anyone thinks of the Ocoee River, they remember the 1996 Olympic whitewater venue on the river above Lake Ocoee. You can experience the same course used by Olympic athletes during Spring and Summer operations. Find out more by clicking on the"Kayak on the 1996 Olympic Course" link. Since the TVA began releasing water down the sections of the Ocoee River above Lake Ocoee, many rafting vendors have sprung up along Hiway 64 approaching Lake Ocoee. Check out the links to some of these groups on the left side of this page. For many years Lake Ocoee was a barren lake as a result of the sulphuric runoff from the Copperhill area so few thought of this area when planning fishing trips. However, a world-class fly-fishing area on the Hiwassee River is only a few minutes from Ocoee Mist. See "Fly-fishing on the Hiwassee." One can find opportunities for canoeing and water-skiing on either the Ocoee River (below the Parksville Dam), Lake Ocoee (AKA Parksville Resevoir), and the Hiwassee River. Lake Ocoee is perfect for water-skiing or just a peaceful cruise on the Ocoee Mist "party barge."

    Traditional Sports
Traditional sports include t'aekwondo, a form of self-defense. This unarmed martial art originated in Korea, and it is now practiced all over the world. The World T'aekwondo Federation (WTF) is headquartered in Seoul and hosts world championship competitions every two years. (Address: 635, Yoksam-dong, Kangnam-gu, Seoul; Tel. (02) 566-2505; Fax (02) 5534728) Anyone wishing to observe a competition or obtain information while in Seoul can call the WTF or contact the Korea T'aekwondo Association (Tel. (02) 420-4271). Another traditional sport is ssirum, Korean-style wrestling. One loses when any part of the body other than the feet touches the ground. There are amateur and professional competitions throughout the year. Group tour guides can assist you in attending a ssirum contest. Koreans have been noted in archery over the centuries. A traditional Korean bow has a double curvature to maintain greater flexibility. The production process is very difficult and complex. Western-style bows have been used more and more in recent years, and Koreans have performed outstandingly at many international competitions. Archery competitions are held during festivals and other times during the year. The Korea Ssirum Association, the Korean Archery Association, and the Korea T'aekwondo Association are under the control of the Korea Amateur Sport Association (KASA), which houses over 44 sport organizations. South China's Guangdong Province have set a target of retaining the top rank at the gold medal tally at the 2nd Non-Olympic Sports National Games slated to open on Saturday in Mianyang, of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Guangdong scored a shining triple by top-ranking for the total gold medal, medal tally and team standings at the inaugural Games held two years ago in Ningbo of east China's Zhejiang Province.
This year Guangdong are determined to secure a second ranking while trying to defend their number one place, by winning a total of 28 gold medals. They are to face 53 other delegations from across the country.
A total of 6,000 athletes and coaches are expected to be in Mianyang, which is 120 kilometers northeast of Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital.
