Unit Overview
George Washington: First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen consists of three lessons examining George Washington's leadership in the French and Indian War, at the Federal Convention, and as chief executive. They are based on primary source documents from George Washington Papers, 1741-1799 . The lessons are intended for secondary students, grades 8-12. The documents from Washington's Letterbooks include focus questions that may be used in Socratic seminars, cooperative learning, individual and group work. In preparation, teachers should review the on line documents and suggested readings accompanying each lesson to determine appropriateness for their students. Recognizing that eighteenth-century conventions of grammar, vocabulary, and spelling may be distracting, teachers may choose to read selected documents aloud, and/or use vocabulary building activities before reading. Students might also transcribe documents into contemporary English. Teachers may also wish to refer to Framework for Using Primary Sources with Students before beginning the unit.

Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members
Foreign Service life is an education. Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members , first published in February 1996, is dedicated to assist Foreign Service family members in obtaining the best education possible to supplement their Foreign Service experience. While the emphasis is on schools and school-age children, this book looks at Foreign Service family members of all ages. There is information on the day care needs of Foreign Service babies and early childhood education for preschoolers. At the other end of the spectrum, it looks at adult education options for Foreign Service spouses and young adult family members who are not in college. It is organized in general chronological order with the information on related topics interspersed throughout age level material. This book is designed for those people who want information on a specific topic as well as for those people who want to use it as a planning tool to look at the total picture of education for Foreign Service families. Chapters are below.

L The Washington County Board of Education truly has its finger on the pulse of the future. Each of its classrooms has at least one computer, allowing students to explore the world outside their own county through the internet. The high school also offers college preparatory and vocational curriculums in addition to its general classes to help students reach their individual goals. Also serving Washington County is one private school. Brentwood school offers classes for grades K-12 and enrolls around 500 students each year. With a 18 to one student/teacher ratio and a commitment to preparing students for a future in higher education or the work world, Brentwood has asserted itself as a viable alternative to the public school system. Forty percent of Brentwood's faculty hold master's degrees, and all faculty members are certified. In addition to qualified faculty, Brentwood also offers its students a wide range of elective classes ranging from accounting to psychology. Brentwood also stresses the development of their students as "whole" people. The school encourages participation in extra-curricular events like debate, literary and sports to broaden each student's horizons. Brentwood has found success in literary, debate and sports competition that show the school is making he most of its talented students. Along with insurpassed educational opportunities, Washington County is home to many excellent healthcare providers. The Washington County Regional Medical Center provides comprehensive healthcare services to residents of Washington and surrounding counties in a comfortable, professional setting.

Three reporters associated with WUNC are recognized for outstanding journalism
(Chapel Hill, North Carolina, December 30, 2002) Three WUNC Public Radio reporters recently won awards for their work in public broadcasting.
Jessica Jones, education reporter; Julie Donnelly, state capitol reporter for the North Carolina public Radio Association; and Steve Baragona were each recognized for outstanding reporting.
Jones won the North Carolina School Bell award for a story in which she investigated the inconsistencies in standardized testing between U.S. military based schools and civilian public schools in the same community. Jones reported that students in general, and minorities specifically score higher in military schools. She posed the question of whether or not military schools have bridged the racial gap and if civilian schools can learn from them.
The N.C. School Bell Award is given by the N.C. Association of Educators and the Public Schools of N.C. Award recipients are chosen from stories submitted by members of the media.

Teaching about George Washington. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Do most students understand the importance of George Washington as a military and political leader during a time that demanded extraordinary leadership? The bicentennial of Washington's death in 1999 is an appropriate time to reflect upon his role and place in the school curriculum.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE "GREAT PERSON" IN HISTORY
By what criteria should educators decide to emphasize a person in history? Extraordinary goodness or virtue should not be the sole standard (Patrick 1992, 12-13). Instead, the touchstone for inclusion should be whether an individual's achievements have significantly shaped events in his or her country or the world. By this criterion, George Washington merits strong emphasis in the school curriculum. Richard Brookhiser reminds us in "Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington" (1996, 9) that teachers often stress impersonal forces of history and neglect individuals: "Thus the American Revolution was a triumph of Democracy or the Enlightenment. As reductionists, we believe that the historical figures, who floated like chips in the intellectual backwash, attached themselves to the cause for trivial motives, often sordid. We have lost the conviction that ideas require men to bring them to earth."

This digest describes the details of the Troops to Teachers program and discusses the conversion of military personnel to school employees.
TRANSITION TO TEACHING
While some teachers in the classroom have had previous military experience, the current drawdown of armed forces is focusing attention on teaching as a second career. Several reasons explain why teaching has become a more attractive option to servicemen and women being forced out of their military occupations. *Many defense personnel are well educated in fields like mathematics, science, and foreign languages that often experience shortages of qualified classroom teachers. In addition, former service personnel have managerial and organizational skills to oversee classrooms and maintain discipline (Celis, 1992).

Be Brief 2. State Who You Are and What You Want Up Front 3. Request Specific Action 4. Be Concise You could cite student achievement, proximity of the schools, security issues, etc. as facts to back up your concerns. If you are a member of a community off base your number one point may be that you do not want to see your local schools forced to take on the burden of educating kids from your local base. You could cite the inadequacy of Impact Aid in paying the per-pupil cost of educating military dependents and the fact that state and local funds would have to be used to cover most of the cost, even though the tax base would not be any bigger. If you are a student, your main point could be that you are getting an excellent education in a DDESS school and want to remain a DDESS student. You could cite your own academic performance, or some of the points made in the Vanderbilt study about how well students do. You could also discuss how DDESS schools were created with military dependents in mind and cater to their unique needs.

57. It's About Propriety, Stupid
From the washington Times Opinion Pages, A21, Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Strictrules are part of the learning process at military schools.
http://www.beverlye.com/propriety_20010729.html
Published in Washington, D.C. www.washtimes.com From the Washington Times Opinion Pages, A21, Tuesday, July 17, 2001 It's about propriety, stupid
by Beverly K. Eakman Generally I concur with pro-lifers, but like the ubiquitous American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), they missed the mark on the issue of dismissing pregnant cadets at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Military academies, be it VMI, the Citadel, or West Point, exist for only one reason: to build an honorable, dedicated, and competent fighting force that will put the defense of our country first. This means the criteria for success are going to be different. It means students will be held to a higher standard. It means following rules, many of them arbitrary. It implies stipulations that would be challenged under different circumstances. Strict rules are part of the learning process at military schools. If cadets are overly sensitive, if they cannot control their impulses, cannot abide by the decisions of their superiors, subordinating their personal wants to the needs of the country at least for a finite period of time, then maybe they aren't cut out for a military career. Better to find out sooner than later, when people's lives are on the line. Prospective cadets know when they apply to VMI and similar institutions that the priorities are going to be different. Strictures against fraternization, and other constraints not applicable to a civilian setting, exist for a reason. The decision to dismiss pregnant students at VMI, as well as their partners, if discovered, is not about undermining families or encouraging abortions. It's about obedience, dependability. It's about the capability to go into dangerous situations that military personnel often must face. Most importantly, it's about propriety. Not everyone is suited to a highly disciplined lifestyle indeed most are not. But if one is attracted to military service as a career choice, then it is necessary to have a highly developed sense of propriety a virtue that gets short shrift today. For a career officer, there is a time and a place for courtship and family, and status as a student in a military academy or as a conscript in a bootcamp aren't it.

This one invited him to sign if he wanted his son's name, address and telephone number withheld from the Pentagon. Otherwise, the information would be included in a directory of the school's juniors and seniors that will be given upon request to military recruiters.
Schmitt signed the form quickly.
"Most people probably missed [the form], and it'll probably be too late," Schmitt said. "There is a commodity with your consumer history. Public Schools
Public school data on districts, schools, principals, teachers and library media centers are reliable at the state and national levels. A public school is defined as an institution that provides educational services for at least one of grades 1 through 12 (or comparable ungraded levels), has one or more teachers to give instruction, is located in one or more buildings, receives public funds as primary support and is operated by an education or chartering agency. They include regular, special education, vocational/technical, alternative and public charter schools. Schools in juvenile detention centers and schools located on military bases and operated by the Department of Defense are included. They also include Bureau of Indian Affairs-funded schools operated by local public school districts. Traditional Public Schools are a subset of all public schools that are not public charter schools. They include regular, special education, vocational/technical and alternative schools. They also include schools in juvenile detention centers and schools located on military bases and operated by the Department of Defense and Bureau of Indian Affairs-funded schools operated by local public school districts.
