NEWS ABOUT THIS OFFICE JOBS CONTACT US ... Take Action
elcome to the Washington State Attorney General's Office Consumer and Criminal Justice Clearinghouse. The Information Age is truly an exciting time. In less than ten years, advances in computers, the Internet, and communications technology have significantly changed our world. Today,
  • computer technology doubles every 18 months;
  • nearly 40 percent of American businesses have web sites;
  • almost one of every two American household is wired to the Net; and
  • 760 new households join them every hour.
But there is also a dark side. Many of the traditional crimes faced by state attorneys general and other law enforcement agencies are becoming just as pervasive on the Internet. On the Net, scam artists have an open market for practicing their schemes, hate groups have a global stage to present their message, and sex offenders can prey on children in chatrooms while cloaked in anonymity. As some have put it, "it’s the same old house with a new coat of paint." The challenge for law enforcement is to adapt and continue protecting the public in the high tech world. The challenge is significant but federal, state, and local agencies are learning to combine resources and cooperate in new ways to fight high tech crime and catch cyber criminals.
