CLICK ON MAP FOR FULL VERSION A SHORT HISTORY OF THE EVENTS IN ILLINOIS BEFORE DURING AND AFTER THE WAR OF 1812 The former Territorial Governments had begun obtaining the land of the Native Americans in a series of Treaties. These treaties exchanged land for yearly payments of money and presents. The Indians were not satisfied and took advantage of the War of 1812 to side with the British. The tribes involved were the Potawatomi, Kickappo, and The Sac and Fox. During the both French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic wars between France and Great Britain both parties violated the maritime rights of the neutral powers. This especially affected the United States. The British Navy impressed (kidnapped and took aboard for service) thousands of seamen from vessels registered in the U.S. which include naturalized Americans claiming they were either deserters of British subjects. In 1807 the British Frigate Leopard fired on the U.S.S. Chesapeake in American Territorial Waters, then removed and later excecuted 4 crewmen. Britain also was seizing vessels which were bound for Europe but didn't stop first in Britain. Between 1803 and 1812 nearly 1500 American ships were seized. The American's were prepared to answer with economic sanctions. A trade ban was imposed on Britain in Nov. 1810 but Britain refused to comply and President Madison summoned Congress into session in November of 1811 to prepare for was. War was declared on Great Britain 18 Jun 1812.

Chapter 6 THE WAR OF 1812 Extracted from AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY ARMY HISTORICAL SERIES OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF MILITARY HISTORY UNITED STATES ARMY CHAPTER 6 The War of 1812 To Great Britain the War of I8I2 was simply a burdensome adjunct of its greater struggle against Napoleonic France. To the Canadians it was clearly a case of naked American aggression. But to the Americans it was neither simple nor clear. The United States entered the war with confused objectives and divided loyalties and made peace without settling any of the issues that had induced the nation to go to war. Origins of the War The immediate origins of the war were seizure of American ships, insults and injuries to American seamen by the British Navy, and rapid expansion of the American frontier. The British outrages at sea took two distinct forms. One was the seizure and forced sale of merchant ships and their cargoes for allegedly violating the British blockade of Europe. Although France had declared a counterblockade of the British Isles and had seized American ships, England was the chief offender because its Navy had greater command of the seas. The second, more insulting, type of outrage was the capture of men from American vessels for forced service in the Royal Navy. The pretext for impressment was the search for deserters, who, the British claimed, had taken employment on American vessels. The reaction in the United States to impressment differed from that aroused by the seizure of ships and cargoes. In the latter case the maritime interests of the eastern seaboard protested vigorously and demanded naval protection, but rather than risk having their highly profitable trade cut off by war with England they were willing to take an occasional loss of cargo. Impressment, on the other hand, presented no such financial hardship to the shipowners, whatever the consequences for the unfortunate seamen, and the maritime interests tended to minimize it.

Previous Page Next Page As the country prepared for yet another war with Britain, the United States suffered from internal divisions. While the South and West favored war, New York and New England opposed it because it interfered with their commerce. The declaration of war had been made with military preparations still far from complete. There were fewer than 7,000 regular soldiers, distributed in widely scattered posts along the coast, near the Canadian border and in the remote interior. These soldiers were to be supported by the undisciplined militia of the states. Hostilities between the two countries began with an invasion of Canada, which, if properly timed and executed, would have brought united action against Montreal. But the entire campaign miscarried and ended with the British occupation of Detroit. The U.S. Navy, however, scored successes and restored confidence. In addition, American privateers, swarming the Atlantic, captured 500 British vessels during the fall and winter months of 1812 and 1813. The campaign of 1813 centered on Lake Erie. General William Henry Harrison who would later become president led an army of militia, volunteers and regulars from Kentucky with the object of reconquering Detroit. On September 12, while he was still in upper Ohio, news reached him that Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry had annihilated the British fleet on Lake Erie. Harrison occupied Detroit and pushed into Canada, defeating the fleeing British and their Indian allies on the Thames River. The entire region now came under American control.

Star-Spangled Banner and the War of 1812
A fter the American Revolution ended in victory at Yorktown in 1781, a second war with Great Britain broke out in 1812 over impressment, trade issues, and territorial expansion. The United States won early victories in the Atlantic and on Lake Erie, but by 1814 the British blockade of the American coast kept American merchant vessels and warships confined in their home ports. With the defeat of the French emperor Napoleon's armies in Europe, Great Britain turned its full attention to ending U.S. forays into Canada. Admiral Alexander Cochrane, a British naval commander, was ordered to attack U.S. coastal areas, and Gen. Robert Ross prepared to capture towns along the East Coast to create diversions while British army forces attacked along the northern boundaries of the United States. Ross and Cochrane knew that an attack on Washington, D.C., would deal a severe blow to American pride. Late in the summer of 1814, British soldiers and sailors landed at Benedict, Maryland. They marched towards Washington, defeated an American force at the Battle of Bladensburg, and occupied the nation's capital on August 24. The British invaders burned the President's House and other public buildings before marching back to their ships. During their departure they arrested Dr. William Beanes of Upper Marlboro, said to be responsible for the arrest of British stragglers and deserters during the campaign, and imprisoned him on a British warship in the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the Potomac.

The War of 1812
A Short History Donald R. Hickey This abridged version of Donald Hickey's popular The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict focuses on the military campaigns as well as the political and diplomatic history of the war. Intended for a general audience and students in introductory and upper division United States history courses, the volume is gripping reading. It includes a chronology of major events during the war and a list of further suggested reading. From reviews of Hickey's earlier book, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict "The definitive study." Douglas R. Egerton, Journal of American History "A careful, accurate, solid account. . . . Hickey's reliable study makes the war more accessible and understandable." Roger H. Brown, Reviews in American History "Adeptly presents both details and overviews of the War of 1812 in a very readable manner. . . . A very useful work." L. E. Babits, Choice "A balanced assessment. . . . Hickey has succeeded in the difficult task of providing a scholarly, reliable, general account of the complicated history of the War of 1812." Noble E.
