63. Savage Earth: Out Of The Inferno
I think that is why volcanoes are so cool to grade school kids, says ChrisNye, a volcanologist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage.
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/savageearth/volcanoes/
Mountains of Fire by Kathy Svitil No geological phenomenon assails our senses quite like a volcanic eruption. Stay close enough, and you can hear the explosion, see the fire fountaining, smell the gases, feel the ground tremble, taste the ash in your mouth. "I think that is why volcanoes are so cool to grade school kids," says Chris Nye, a volcanologist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage. "And scientifically, volcanoes are interesting because they bring you information about the interior of the planet, down to 60 miles or more, and help you study the evolution of the planets, on a human time scale. Mostly in geology you think of processes taking thousands or millions of years."
All volcanoes are born when hot magma rises to the surface, infiltrates a weak spot in the Earth's outer crust, and breaks through. Most of the 600-plus active volcanoes on Earth are associated with the boundaries of the tectonic plates, the seven great plates that carry the oceans and continents. They are especially common in subduction zones, which occur when one plate dips beneath another. As the plate dives into the mantle the layer of hot, flexible rock on which the plates glide it gradually is heated. That releases fluids which heat the overlying rock, producing blobs of molten rock that rise to the surface. The molten rock or magma collects in weak patches of crust, in structures called magma chambers. If the pressure in the magma chamber builds high enough, the magma will erupt. A volcano is born. TEXT VERSION
    Introduction (grades 4 - 8)
*This packet is only available online.
(From VOLCANOES! Poster. All the images are clickable for larger view.) (Left: Poster Fig. 1) Volcanic eruptions are among the Earth's most powerful and destructive forces. Imagine hearing a volcano erupt thousands of miles away. Imagine looking through binoculars and seeing the top of a mountain collapse. Imagine discovering an ancient Roman city that had been buried in volcanic ash. Volcanoes are also creative forces. The Earth's first oceans and atmosphere formed from the gases given off by volcanoes. In turn, oceans and an atmosphere created the environment that made life possible on our planet. Volcanoes have also shaped the Earth's landscape. Many of our mountains, islands, and plains have been built by volcanic eruptions.
    Why Do Volcanoes Erupt?
Deep within the Earth it is so hot that some rocks slowly melt and become a thick flowing substance called magma . Because it is lighter than the solid rock around it, magma rises and collects in magma chambers. Eventually some of the magma pushes through vents and fissures in the Earth's surface. A volcanic eruption occurs! Magma that has erupted is called

A Teacher's Guide is available. This link is to the ETE home page since it gives the easiest access to necessary introductory and teacher information. The fact that Loowit, to use the Indian name for Mt. St. Helens, has always been thought of as a lady (see Tragic Triangle: The Love Story) by those who live within sight of her snow covered mantle. This is still true, though a good 2,600 feet are missing from what was before, as in this photograph of the chapel at YMCA Camp Meehan, taken by a then 14 year-old Barry Murray, our webmaster, in the summer of 1953. Ecuador has been blessed with an incomparable geography. Ecuador boasts a beautiful coastline, fantastic biological diversity in the Amazon Jungle and, of course, a breath taking scenery of the Andes Mountains.
The Andes Mountains are the southern end of a huge mountain chain that runs from Alaska, through U.S.A, Central and South America. This chain includes the Rockies in the U.S.A and the Sierra Madre in Central America. In Ecuador, this massive chain is divided into two main mountain ranges, the Eastern and Western ( "Cordillera Oriental and Cordillera Occidental" ). There is also a region of small mountains found joining the two ranges, which we call "nudos". Each one of these regions has variations in climate, flora, fauna, and in the communities. Most of the obtained information and photographs came from published literature by photographer Marco Cruz - "Monta–as del Ecuador", and by photographer - adventurer Jorge Anhalzer. We will start with the peaks located in the Cordillera Occidental, and then go on with the
