CACR Training Research Methods Training for Economic Development Practitioners sponsored by ACCRA Center for Applied Community Research National Association of State Development Agencies Research Division Mason Enterprise Center at George Mason University September 18-22, 2000 George Mason University, Arlington, Virginia, campus Economic Development is NOT an information business....Instead, it is a KNOWLEDGE business. Knowledge involves organizing data into information that can be processed by decision makers. Good economic developers can share data with their clients about their community’s economy. Great economic developers offer knowledge, bound in a sound understanding of the economy.
This training is designed to help economic developers find data, analyze information, and share knowledge. In its third year, “Research Methods for Economic Development Practitioners,” is designed to help economic developers become better analysts and help researchers build a foundation for their career. ACCRA, the National Association of State Development Agencies (NASDA), and the Mason Enterprise Center and the School of Public Policy at George Mason University (GMU) sponsor the training to build a better capacity within the economic development profession for understanding and analyzing regional economic information.

Virginia Union University Program for Environmental Justice, Education and Research Program Overview The Virginia Union University (VUU) Program for Environmental Justice, Education and Research (PEJER) was designed to conduct research, develop training and address strategies that offset the disproportionate exposure of people of color to environmental toxins locally and on a global scale. Environmental science (SC) and environmental justice (EJ) training, community workshops and student internships comprise the core thrust of our program. The VUU PEJER is an EPA/UNCF funded program that involves faculty, staff and students from this and surrounding campuses; neighborhood civic and environmental interest groups as well as state and local economic development/regulatory agencies. At present our research interests are directed toward (1) development and transfer of technology designed for the bioremediation of local Brownsfield sites and (2) evaluation of bioaccumulation of selected substances in fish in and around selected James River sites. Other interest include studies outlining the underlying mechanisms of action of potential contaminants associated with the occurrence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Gulf-War Syndrome and essential hypertension of select populations. Outreach efforts are ongoing with regards to public awareness about environmental laws, regulations and policy changes; recycling and bioremediation; CDC/ATSDR priority environmental pollutants effecting "at risk" local populations and legislation update for current ES related platforms and positions. Career opportunity activities, self-help studies, local business and community projects are initiated on an ad-hoc basis.
