    88. NOVA Online | The Vikings | Explore A Viking Village
NOVA Online's video tour of a lifelike scale model of Birka, a medieval Viking village that archaeologists excavated near modern-day Stockholm.
    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vikings/village.html
    Explore a Viking Village
Want to "walk" through a real Viking village? The sequences below from the NOVA film "The Vikings" offer a fascinating and unprecedented look at Birka, a medieval Viking village that archeologists recently excavated near modern-day Stockholm. The video clips come from footage that Swedish filmmakers Mikael Agaton and Lars Rengfelt shot of a 1:30 scale model of Birka now housed in the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm. See the various clips to learn more about the model and how it was made and filmed.
You'll need one of the (free) software plugins - QuickTime or RealPlayer - to be able to view the clips. If you already have the software, choose a media format to view a clip. Note: all of the clips are silent.
    Construction
    QuickTime RealVideo
Swedish Television had its own model builders construct the mini village. Working from the archeologists' maps and sketches, the designers built the model in sections so it could be moved into a film studio. All told, the model took six to eight months to complete.
    Archeology
    QuickTime RealVideo
The model builders relied on the results of a five-year archeological investigation of Birka that ended in 1995. The fieldwork provided a much clearer idea of the layout of buildings and streets than had been known before, a layout that the model faithfully recreates.

    97. Darkages, King, Dunmail, Cumbria, Medieval, History, Dark Ages, Britons

    http://www.zensurweb.com/darkage/timeline.htm
his part of the site will attempt to document the history of Cumbria in the "Dark Ages" as a long term (very) project. As my research time is limited the site is not updated very frequently but I suggest you keep calling back to see if anything new is here. The intention with this page is to first figure out when British independent rule ended and then slowly work back to Romans. I have so much conflicting information on 10th century Cumbria that I have included my development notes in the hope that someone reading them can provide some illumination. It seems Cumbria underwent three major phases in this time period
    • 410-620 Rheged 620-908 Northumbria 908-1066 Strathclyde
So the timeline is split into 3 tables accordingly. First Age My attempts at producing a definitive king listing for this period have not yet come to fruition and probably never will. I am striving to provide something different here to the excellent websites such as David Fords "Early British Kingdoms" , the "Regnal Chronologies" or "Kingdoms of the British celts". As a result I have attempted to gather and cross correlate the findings of these sites (I will add more when I have time to study them). Be aware that it is difficult to directly compare dates as the Quoted dates may be for the life of the King and not his reign. Bearing this in mind it still provides an interesting comparison without all that web hopping. I also have to add dates from several books and papers that I have waiting to be read.

The Nordic Inn, Medieval Brew and Bed
Your host and owner of "The Nordic Inn," is Steinarr Elmerson, " or " The Crazy Viking ." The latter is a name he was most known for when the dream began. By the way, you can't tell the story unless you know the main character. If you haven't visited the Host page , please do. The history of the Nordic Inn begins with the reason for its existence. Steinarr was working as the chief Metrologist for the world leader in Biotechnology, in southern California, when he became sickened by 'Corporate America,' and what it stood for. At this time he was on a low fat diet and cooked most everything he ate. His son, Tyson, suggested to him that with his cooking they should open a restaurant; and in searching for a way to escape 'Corporate America' this seemed to be the door out. Steinarr took Tyson's advice to heart and began his search into opening a restaurant, but found that only 20% of restaurants even survive. Shortly after this time, a page in the history of the Nordic Inn turned when Tyson joined the Simi Valley Vikings football team. With the coaching staff all ready picked, Steinarr decided to involve himself as the team's mascot, a Viking.
