There are cultural tours run by many companies all over the world, this guide is aimed to help you understand what to expect, how to prepare and of course decide where to go on your cultural tour. What to Expect Cultural Tours are usually run in small groups, 12 or less, you will be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, who will often local. There is a variety of accommodation on cultural tours ranging from camping to five star hotels and anything in between. Some companies try to select smaller places to stay, situated within the local community to foster better connections with local culture. In rural areas especially, accommodation and facilities may be quite basic and you may not always find electricity and indoor plumbing.
Meals are often included in the tour and these tend to be taken in local restaurants enabling you to try the specialities of the region. It is worth bearing in mind basic food safety advice such as only drinking bottled, boiled or filtered water, avoid cold or raw dishes and peel your fresh fruit and vegetables. When we Americans first went to war in Vietnam, we knew little of its historical heritage or its people's national aspirations. Years later, after tens of thousands of Americans had served and died there we had still learned little. Now that the war is a quarter of a century behind us, Vietnam still remains a mystery to most of us. Yet Vietnam is a country not a war and one with an impressive history, culture and spirituality that Americans should know about. No matter how old you are or what your background, as an American you have a relationship to the land and people, culture and country of Vietnam. The war we had within that country has married our histories and destinies forever. Today, the beauty and complexity of Vietnam is available as the country has opened itself up for tourism. We now have the opportunity to heal our rift with that country and within ourselves. All members of the Vietnam generation, veterans and non veterans alike are especially welcome on this journey in which we will explore this ancient land as well as sites important to the Vietnam War itself. Younger and older Americans are also encouraged to accompany us in this effort to learn the lessons of our war, discover the richness and beauty of Vietnam, and learn more about ourselves.

      Tibet
North Pole and South Pole are known as the two extremities of the earth. But some people call Tibet the world's third extremity, considering its height above sea level.
In the past one hundred years, countless people made an attempt to go to Tibet through the ancient "Musk Road" but many failed to reach the destination and some even died on the long and tortuous way. Thanks to the construction efforts over the past decades, travel to Tibet is no longer considered a perilous undertaking.
All Roads Lead to Lhasa Though there is no railway link, Tibet has already opened two airports, one in Lhasa, the regional capital, the other in Chengdu, linking it with Chengdu, Beijing, Xi'an, Chongqing, and Kathmandu. Travel by air can provide you an opportunity to appreciate the unique scenery of the sea clouds and the rolling snow-covered mountain peaks from a height of 10,000 meters.

VIETNAM'S "WORLD HERITAGE ROAD" GOES ONLINE-
PUTTING CENTRAL VIETNAM ON THE INTERNATIONAL TOURIST MAP
(Danang, Vietnam, June 26, 2002) - The World Heritage Road, a brand new tourism initiative uniting Central Vietnam provinces of Thua Thien Hue, Danang City and Quang Nam is now up and running and has launched its official website www.worldheritageroad.com The World Heritage Road has been conceived as an initiative to close the gap in development between North and South Vietnam and will stretch from Vinh to Hue to Danang to Hoi An/ My Son to Nha Trang to Dalat, around 1,500km of Highway Number One along the coast of Central Vietnam. It is so-called because the route encompasses no less than three UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites; the sixteenth century silk route trading port of Hoi An; My Son Valley, the sacred remains of the ancient Cham civilization, and the ancient imperial city of Hue. The route will add to the diversity and quality of Vietnam's tourism product and is expected to contribute greatly to the rapid development of a local consumer market of around 20 million people living in Central Vietnam, as well as attracting 2 million domestic and 1 million international travellers a year to the area. Currently the number of international visitors to Danang is increasing by 20% a year and the number of domestic visitors by 15%.

Pros
Superbly written and illustrated, West has a razor sharp mind. Illuminating!!!!
Cons
Needs an update...there is even more evidence than when it was last revised. The Bottom Line Read this to gain a whole new perspective on Egypt's ancient history, from a man who has evidence to back up his love, respect and insight into this culture. Full Review You wouldn’t think it from talking with the average Egyptologist, but there are two versions of Egyptian history. In one version, upheld by Egyptologists in universities around the globe, within four hundred years, the Egyptians went from being tent-living Bedouins to building the Great pyramid of Giza. They built this mighty structure without the aid of the wheel, using human physical manpower, ropes, pulleys, ramps and rollers. The Egyptians in this version had only rudimentary science, astronomical skill, mathematics without geometric insight, and had traveled no further than Northern Africa. In the other version, equally researched, equally validated, but quelled by Egyptologists, the culture is possibly two thousand years older, had an intricate knowledge of Euclidian geometric principles, an advanced astronomy, and a method of building in stone which we are completely unable to replicate today. They had met and traded with people from as far away as South America.

Vietnam
by Nancy Freeman Introduction
Looking for a quick lunch of soup, salad or a sandwich? Maybe you ought to think Vietnamese. Perhaps an exquisite vegetarian meal? Well, then, why not think Vietnamese? Or is tonight time for multiple dishes, contrasting flavors, varied textures and exotic ingredients? Once again, it's a good time to think Vietnamese. Or perhaps something healthy and "lite?" Guess what: think Vietnamese. While Vietnamese food has long been appreciated in France, the former colonial power, U.S. residents are only beginning to discover its many fine features. Vietnamese chefs like to refer to their cooking as "the nouvelle cuisine of Asia." And indeed, with the heavy reliance on rice, wheat and legumes, abundance of fresh herbs and vegetables, minimal use of oil, and treatment of meat as a condiment rather than a main course, Vietnamese food has to be among the healthiest on the planet.

Remember Vietnam? More than two million Vietnamese and 58,000 Americans died. Country Joe McDonald was a war veteran. He first sang the I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag in 1965: And it's five, six, seven
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We're all gonna die
It was innocent Vietnamese villagers, though, who died at My Lai on March 16 1968. Led by Lieutenant William Calley, "Charlie Company", a unit of the US Eleventh Light Infantry, massacred 500 unarmed villagers. My Lai was a turning point in the uncalled-for US invasion. How, Americans began to ask, could the US have God and "Charlie Company" on its side? In what ways was "Charlie Patrol", President Johnson and the US morally superior to the Vietcong, Ho Chi Minh and an ancient Far Eastern civilization? Even if it were worth fighting to keep communism and its weapons of mass destruction at bay by blasting civilians with napalm, what positive message was Uncle Sam preaching? "Men who take up arms against one another in public," said Abraham Lincoln - quoted in Lt Calley's trial - to Union troops during the US civil war, "do not cease on this account to be moral human beings, responsible to one another and to God."

It is not primarily a course about America's war in Vietnam except as that war affected the Vietnamese people. The focus will be on the Vietnamese themselves: their origins, their ancient civilization, their religions, their relations with their neighbors, especially China and the other Indochinese peoples, their conquest by the Chinese, French, and Japanese, and the victory of the Communists over America and the South Vietnamese. We will discuss what this victory has brought in the way of economic, political, and social changes. We will consider gender roles, differences between rural and urban life, minorities, and Vietnam's relations with the other countries of Indochina, the Pacific Rim, and the world. We will conclude by examining Vietnam today, it relationship with the overseas Vietnamese communities, and with America.
