There are many options for ensuring that your gift is used in the way you wish—from improving the health and well-being of animals to educating veterinarians:
Scholarships

Scholarships provide funds to help students during their four rigorous years of veterinary medical education toward the DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) degree.
Fellowships Fellowships provide funds for graduate students who have completed the DVM and are obtaining an advanced degree, such as a PhD. These graduate students assist our faculty with teaching and important research projects. They are our future scientists and faculty members. ~back to top~ Gifts can be made to support a project that addresses a unique need, such as care for indigent animals, or as a tribute to honor or remember a special animal or person. ~back to top~ Gifts for humane research and animal studies support the breakthroughs that improve the health of all animals. These contributions also help veterinary medicine control diseases and benefit the long-term welfare of animals. Feline leukemia vaccine and canine dialysis, for example, were developed at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with the support of private individuals. Gifts may go to a specific research center in which you have an interest: ~back to top~ Expanded Facilities

Program
The program consists of an individual research project, workshops on research-related topics, sessions on research career development for veterinarians, and a veterinary research symposium.
Individual research project
The research project is the most important part of the Program.  The goals of the research project are to have students address a significant experimental question, work independently and with other researchers, and produce and publish results.  Students will be matched with a preceptor (see list of faculty below) according to research interests.  The research interests of most of the participating faculty fall in the fields of neuroscience and infectious diseases.  The preceptor will have outlined a focused project for the student to perform in the preceptor’s laboratory.  Students will become completely involved in their assigned laboratory – participating in laboratory meetings and social events, attending seminars with other members of their laboratory, and working on their research project at least 40 hours/week.

Established in 1970, the Section of Medical Genetics has taken on a leadership role in veterinary and comparative genetic research involving companion animals. The following major research programs have been developed: Identification and Characterization of Hereditary Diseases in Animals The NIH-supported National Referral Center - Animal Models of Human Genetic Disease forms the core of the hereditary disease studies by the Section and is the only one in the nation. Through the genetics/pediatrics clinics and referrals from other institutions, over 50 hereditary diseases have been identified and characterized in dogs and cats. These clinical to molecular genetic studies contributed to the better understanding of the pathophysiology of these diseases as well as the accurate diagnosis. Based upon this research the Josephine Deubler Genetic Disease Testing Laboratory utilizes a variety of DNA, biochemical, and hematologic tests to identify affected and carrier animals of known recessively inherited diseases in dogs an cats. Other species studied include primates, emus, mice, and food animals. Many of these studies are accomplished through collaborations with other investigators within the School's other departments at the University of Pennsylvania as well as other institutions.

Program in Comparative Medicine
Director
Louis J. DeTolla, Jr., VMD, PhD
The Program in Comparative Medicine, established in 1989, studies the characterization of animal models of human disease for biomedical research and the use of such models to advance understanding of disease or biological processes. Comparative Medicine contributes to the School of Medicine by providing accredited services for laboratory animal care through Veterinary Resources, collaborative research, professional development of veterinary physicians and staff, formal training of veterinarians in residence, and a resource for information and instruction on the use of laboratory animals in research.

Ethiopia, that has the largest livestock population in Africa, established the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM) in 1979 under the jurisdiction of the Addis Ababa University (AAU). The Faculty started with a six year degree program in veterinary medicine. But in 1989 another school, the Institute for Animal Health Assistants, which was a diploma granting school run by the Commission for Higher Education, came under its jurisdiction. Since then FVM runs two educational programs: a six year doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM), and a two year diploma for animal health assistants.
Departments
The FVM currently has seven academic departments that specialize in various veterinary aspects.

Campus research awards top $356 million
By Vivian Carmichael
U The balance of federal funding for the campus comes from the National Science Foundation ($34.3 million), the U.S. Department of Agriculture ($20.2 million), the Department of Energy ($18.2 million), the Department of Defense ($9.1 million) and other federal agencies. The balance of the research support came from private foundations ($17 million), other institutions of higher education ($12.7 million), charitable organizations ($10 million), agricultural marketing boards ($6.9 million) and other types of institutions.
"It’s gratifying to see the campus’s research dollars increasing," says UC Davis Vice Chancellor for Research Barry Klein. "But even more important are the growing reputations of campus researchers who are responsible for the large increase in our funding. We’ve nurtured and attracted increasing numbers of internationally known investigators here and they’re contributing enormously to the campus’s mounting prestige in research."
The School of Medicine, the School of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Engineering saw the largest increases in research funding.
