The Veterinary Institute of Integrative Medicine The goal of The Veterinary Institute of Integrative Medicine is to help integrate holistic medicine into the veterinary field. We are accomplishing this in several ways by:
  • Educating veterinarians through our website, newsletters and seminars. Inspiring corporations to produce holistic products and treatments for animals. Generating revenues to perform research and development of new products and treatments with the intent to discover better ways to restore health to our patients. Making available the most current research and documentation proving the efficacy of a holistic approach. Maintaining a current list of veterinarians who use an integrative medical approach and making this available to the general public. Creating an online university to train veterinarians in holistic practice, methodologies and treatments.

'Man's best friend' helps Purdue, private investors, dig for new clinic
Purdue University North Central , the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine and a group of northwest Indiana veterinarians today (Friday, 12/7) embarked on a first-of-its-kind partnership by breaking ground for a new emergency veterinary clinic on campus. The North Central Veterinary Emergency Center is made possible through a new public-private partnership that brings together Purdue and an investor group of 36 area veterinarians, many of whom are Purdue graduates. Construction of the $2 million regional veterinary clinic will begin this spring, and the facility is expected to open in the fall. "This is a wonderful example of the way in which Purdue, working together with private enterprises, can impact the quality of life for Indiana residents," said Purdue President Martin C. Jischke. "Pet owners in northwestern Indiana will have access to emergency care and referral services they did not have before, and Purdue veterinary students will have another avenue for gaining practical experience in the field." In addition to providing essential animal-care services, it is anticipated that the clinic will be a training site for advanced veterinary residents, as well as fourth-year veterinary students from Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

PREPARING FOR A CAREER IN VETERINARY MEDICINE
Employment Outlook for Veterinarians
Considered from the perspective of comparative medicine, veterinarians help animals and people live longer, healthier lives. They serve society by preventing and treating animal disease, improving the quality of the environment, ensuring the safety of food, controlling diseases transmitted from animals, and advancing medical knowledge. The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree can lead to diverse career opportunities and different lifestylesfrom solo mixed animal practice in a rural area to a teaching or research position at an urban university, medical center, or industrial laboratory. The majority of veterinarians in the United States are in private practice, although significant numbers are involved in preventive medicine, regulatory veterinary medicine, military veterinary medicine, laboratory animal medicine, research and development in industry, and teaching and research in a variety of basic science and clinical disciplines. There are approximately 60,000 veterinarians practicing in the United States. Seventy-five percent of all veterinarians are in private practice. Last year, U.S. veterinary colleges/schools graduated a total of 2,462 students. Of those graduates, 100% found veterinary-related employment or chose to continue their education in order to specialize in a particular clinical area or species.
