I came to Parent to Parent from the American Cancer Society where I was the Coordinator of the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Vermont. My adult life has been spent working in public health and human services fields which led to graduate school at Boston University where I got my Masters in Public Health and Masters in Social Work. I’ve lived in Vermont on-and-off since 1989 and have recently bought a home with my husband. To unwind after a week’s work, we hike, ski (telemark, downhill and cross-country), kayak and read voraciously. I am thrilled to have joined Parent to Parent at such an exciting time and feel fortunate to work with the dedicated staff and Supporting Parents in our mutual effort to be of service to the families of Vermont.

Federal Grant to Enhance Community Partnerships
In December, 2001 the Maternal and Child Health Bureau unveiled its 2010 agenda, renamed 2010 Promises ( see below ) by Polly Arango, former Director of Family Voices, to assure families of the intention of this agenda. Parent to Parent is already striving with its partners to achieve the 2010 Promises. However, Parent to Parent presently only serves 25% of the families in Vermont whose children have special needs - we know we are not reaching as many families living in rural Vermont.
To help achieve our goals, we will be hiring four Family Resource Coordinators (FRC) in four underserved regions in our state. Year One will be a ramp-up year during which time we will focus our initial efforts on the Franklin/Grand Isle and Windham Counties. In Year Two we will expand to include Bennington County and the Northeast Kingdom. The FRCs will be a local face for Parent to Parent. They will provide information, support and matches to local families and will help to coordinate and run Supporting Parent and Health Care Financing Trainings in their region. [Please check the Parent to Parent website Bulletin Board for job postings in September.]
Spearheading the effort will be a Network Coordinator who will keep the local FRCs connected to the main office. The Network Coordinator will travel the state supporting the work of the FRCs and conduct trainings in health care financing information for pediatrician offices, childcare providers and Family, Infant and Toddler staff. The Network Coordinator will also be working with many of our partners in this endeavor.

You'll find here one of the most exciting new undergraduate programs in the country. We are called New College and we are a branch of Vermont College . New College is a four-year accredited Bachelor of Arts program located at Vermont College in Montpelier, Vermont. New College students spend three weeks a year on the Vermont College campus: a week at the beginning of the fall semester in September, the beginning of the spring semester in February, and the end of the school year in June. The rest of the time they study at home, or on the road, at an internship, or wherever they are that semester. By putting the college in the laptop computer, students can go to the real world to learn from experience. In a sense, the whole world becomes the campus. Central to New College are the principles that learning begins with a student's deep interests and passions, and that experience as well as academic study yields the best education. In New College students design individualized studies with a faculty mentor based on their own passions and interests. Homeschoolers thrive at New College. In fact for some people, it sounds as though New College was created for homeschoolers with its emphasis on individualized and experiential learning, but in fact people from many different backgrounds are drawn to this way of learning.

Increase Parent Involvement With First Day of School Activities
Read about how schools across the nation in urban, rural, and suburban areas are breaking down barriers with parents and their communities by making the first day of school an exciting holiday with special activities that include everyone! Typically, on the first day of school, parents drop off their children at the bus stop or the school playground. Maybe they get the kids as far as the classroom door. Then the school doors close and the parents leave. If they're lucky, the school will welcome them back a month or two later for a school-wide open house. Terry Ehrich thought there must be a better way to begin the school year a way that might welcome parents, get them involved, and keep them involved. Ehrich thought the first day of school should be more like the Fourth of July but in this case, a celebration of education. Terry Ehrich, publisher of

Summer Reading Lists Abound on the Web!
Today, Education World surveys some of the best children's summer reading lists on the Web. Here, you'll find an overview of great lists that you or your school's staff might use to create your own summer reading program. Included: Tips for parents plus ideas for publishing students' book reviews.
Every educator knows it. So do most parents. Summer reading is essential for kids! Reading experts note that most young readers suffer a backslide in reading skills during summer downtime. But that needn't be the case. Families can make reading a priority during the summer months, and children will learn that people never take a vacation from learning.

    Ed World's Lists
Don't miss Education World's Summer Reading page . Here, you will find a list of books for each grade K through 8 books recommended by our readers with a brief synopsis of each book. Many local libraries have active summertime programs that encourage and reward children for summer reading. And many schools provide summer reading assignments or summer reading lists.
